The Kobo Aura HD is a high-end ereader that isn't looking to challenge the multimedia-focused tablets. But, in this jack of all trades market, it may be difficult to sell the idea of sophistication when it lacks features like video and colour that most people enjoy.

On my initial dabblings, I honestly didn’t find the screen overly receptive to my touch – things just felt a little on the slow side if truth be told. For example, when entering text via the on-screen keypad, there was maybe a half-second lag between me hitting the key, and it taking effect.

With its angular design, that should let your fingers rest comfortably on the rear of the device, and soft-touch plastic finish, the Aura HD certainly looks and feels like a premium eReader. However, it's the display that really makes the Aura HD stand out from the competition.

There's certainly something in the pitch to dedicated e-reader fans -- the Aura HD has many of the high-end features voracious readers would demand, starting with that big display, which packs in an impressive 265 ppi (compare that to the Paperwhite's still-impressive 212).

Kobo strikes gold with the well-designed Aura HD, a premium ebook reader with high-quality edge lighting and a super-sharp display.

In use, what impresses the most is the clarity of the ereader’s screen. Even at small font levels, there’s no graininess or jagged edges to the text, something Kobo said it achieved not only by virtue of the higher-density display resolution but by going back to first-principles with the fonts.

Despite a few shortcomings, it's clear that the Canadian manufacturer put a fair bit of effort into the Aura HD, and it's a welcome addition to the eBook reader market - if one that is perhaps a tad enthusiastically priced at £139.99.

The Kobo Aura HD is, in our opinion, the best e-reader that money can buy at the moment. It’s fast, simple, and has a good battery — all centered around a screen that is definitely the best in its class.

The specs offer a compelling proposition, even if Kobo's still got a ways to go on the software front. ... however, it's not hard to imagine Amazon and Barnes & Noble getting their hands on E Ink's latest high-res display, which would make the Aura HD much less novel indeed.

If having crisp text, a bright, backlit screen and a powerful processor are mandatory in your e-reader, then the Kobo Aura is for you. It doesn’t exactly live up to its luxurious reputation, but the Aura is mighty impressive for an e-reader.
