Engadget Summary

You've probably changed your phone at least once in the last three years, how about your 3DS? Now, a new DS is likely to be much cheaper, But is it necessary? Well, it depends on how much you game. Fortunately for Nintendo, gaming on its current portable continues to get better. Since our last 3DS review, we've now got multiple Zelda titles, Mario Kart 7, a new Pokémon title and a wealth of other incredible titles. (Fold in existing games as well as backward compatibility with the venerable DS and there's a lot of gaming to be done.)

Our main reason for recommending the system right now, or at least when it launches in the US and Europe sometime next year, is that the 3D effect is no longer a chore: Things still pop out, but now it doesn't make our eyes sore. As we said at the start, we're now willingly turning on the 3D effect with these new devices -- something we hardly ever did with either the original or the XL model. And isn't that effect half the point of a 3DS?

I like to keep things simple:The 3ds is a great system, and is the best current gen gaming system. Quality titles, something about it that just makes you happy, Play Ghost Trick.Play Professor Layton, Radiant Historia, Ghost Trick, and Majoras Mask. Considering backwards compatibility there is an enormous library of quality titles to choose from. The graphics are as good as they need to be...which for me is everything. I can't say it's perfect though as we're a little spoiled by such hi res things. It doesn't stop the graphics from being beautiful or inspiring.Battery life is my only disappointment. Considering it's got two large screens, two speakers, wi fi, a camera, and infared running all at once...well it's not going to last long with all that. Also spoiled by 10 hour ipad. This thing is portable. Fits in my pocket just fine. (I wear shorts.) I carry it in a bag mostly. You're pretty stupid if you buy something designated as extra large then complain about it's form factor/size.gripes: online store needs easier design, battery life kinda middlingpros: It's fucking awesome.

I'm a newbie to console gaming in general, but I've played Xenoblade Chronicles and Smash on the new 3DS for some time now, and it's so much fun, which is the most important thing! The 3DS effect, which definitely works on this make, is really cool and makes games engaging. Nintendo could have more effort on the hardware side, but that obviously isn't their primary concern.

It's a slight upgrade on all fronts, that ties in a perceptible overall improvement.Better ergonomics, better colors, much improved 3D effect, better button feel, more buttons, better battery life, better loading times.I don't think it's enough to be a must-have upgrade if you already have a 3DS XL, but it's an option to consider nonetheless.
