A forgettable product. It isn't bad, exactly, but also doesn't do anything particularly well. - Engadget

Having played a batches of games on the Wii U and having had the system in my home for nearly a week, I can confirm that it is a good machine that makes one's console gaming life surprisingly more convenient and luxurious. I just can't tell you that you have to have one now.

Considering its myriad parts, the Wii U seems to offer a mix of the new and novel and the old and familiar.

The Wii U does prove one point that all tech developers and game designers should heed: Smart devices are nice, but ones that connect are better.

Unless you need to play New Super Mario Bros. U right now, you don’t need a Wii U. But it’s hardly the worst thing to find under your Christmas tree.

Nintendo deserves credit for creativity. But like a player who can’t seem to get through a difficult level in a videogame, the Wii U’s faults hold it back from success.

Would we buy a Wii U? Yes, definitely - if only to play Mario, ZombiU and some of the expected future titles. Would a Wii U replace an established PS3 or Xbox 360? No, probably not.

As a vehicle for family fun, the Wii U is a formidable system, despite a slow UI and the odd niggle here and there.

It may not have the same wow factor as the original Wii, but the Wii U represents a matured take on home consoles that we’ve never seen before from Nintendo, both in its approach to online gaming and its hardware design.

Digital Versus
Despite huge improvements since the first Wii, the Wii U may not be a freak of performance, but it has once again innovated the gaming experience with a well-designed, well-thought-out controller that's fun to use. The touchscreen brings a new dimension to the concept of gaming.

$299 can buy you a lot of home entertainment these days, and for our money, the Wii U falls a bit short to recommend.
