How we score

The Engadget Score is a unique ranking of products based on extensive independent research and analysis by our expert editorial and research teams. The Global Score is arrived at only after curating hundreds, sometimes thousands of weighted data points (such as critic and user reviews).

Engadget Summary

Compact enthusiast cameras have been gaining traction thanks to popular models like the RX100 and now Olympus is jumping on board with the impressive Stylus 1. ePHOTOzine says the Stylus 1 has "classic camera styling" and Digital Trends likes its "comfortable feel" and weight that lets you "grab it with two hands like a DSLR." Despite its compact body, Camera Labs says it has "great controls." Like other compacts the Stylus 1 won't best many of the DSLR models out there, but it does deliver photos that TrustedReviews calls "more than satisfactory for its audience." Unsurprisingly, the Stylus 1 isn't the best when it comes to shooting video, and CNET says while the video quality is "good, this camera is definitely better for photos." Olympus priced the Stylus 1 to compete, and that coupled with impressive performance should put it near the top of your list if you're looking for an enthusiast camera.
