How we score

The Engadget Score is a unique ranking of products based on extensive independent research and analysis by our expert editorial and research teams. The Global Score is arrived at only after curating hundreds, sometimes thousands of weighted data points (such as critic and user reviews).

Engadget Summary

In a DSLR market often dominated by Canon and Nikon, the Pentax K-3 is a stand out option that delivers on multiple fronts. For starters, the K-3 excels in the optics department, earning high marks from nearly every critic that reviewed it. Pocket-Lint says the K-3's "stills performance is excellent," and PC-Mag finds it "delivers outstanding image quality in the most difficult lighting situations." Video quality wasn't as well received, but the K-3 still holds its own with DigitalCameraReview saying the "video image quality is good." And while the design of the K-3 is nothing to get excited about, it still has a weather-sealed body to protect it from the elements. On the inside, the K-3 is no slacker, with Digital Trends finding it "extremely responsive ... it never felt like it slowed us down." If you're shopping for a new camera, the Pentax K-3 is definitely worth your time and attention, thanks to its excellent image quality and snappy performance.
