Engadget Review

The Xperia XZ2 Compact is a high-end flagship in a petite form factor. Sony’s made several compromises on its smaller phones in the past, but not this time. You get all the power and important features of the bigger XZ2 in a cute, bijou body.

TechRadar
The Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact is small and powerful. It's also chunky and partially plastic, so not the best choice if you want a phone that looks as good as it runs.

Android Central
At $649, the Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact isn't cheap — it's the same price as the Pixel 2 and $50 more than the Honor View 10 — but it's the best small phone you can buy. It's not necessarily a better phone than, say, the Pixel 2, since the camera doesn't quite match up and it won't be updated as quickly, but it stands up quite well.

This year’s Compact is an almost perfect recreation of the larger XZ2 in terms of form and functionality; with only Dynamic Vibration and wireless charging being sacrificed in the transition to a smaller footprint. Add to that the fact that it’s almost £200 cheaper than the regular XZ2 and you’ve got even more reason to pick up this Compact pocket rocket right now.

Mobile Syrup
The Xperia XZ2 Compact represents a positive step forward for Sony’s portfolio of mobile devices. It’s a powerful, polished, pretty smartphone that combines modern design philosophy while keeping one foot placed firmly in the past.

Sony has packed top specs into a tiny body, if one that doesn’t seem fancy enough to match the price.

It's rarely so simple to give a firm verdict on a smartphone, whether it's a flagship or not. But Sony has a winner here, as the XZ2 Compact is one of the best smartphones right now and it's cheap at that. It pulls a real OnePlus in today's insane race of premium prices. But it also does an excellent one up from the previous XZ1 Compact model with better screen, camera, performance, and sound.

The screen isn’t quite as good, and the camera is a way behind, but if speed is your main priority, then the XZ2 Compact is definitely worth considering as a more diminutive alternative. Sony’s pint-sized powerhouse may take up a bit more pocket space than previous Xperias, but it’s still a quality phone.

This well-equipped little phone is one of the best small form-factor handsets we’ve seen.

It's not often that you'll find a phone that's both compact and powerful. That's where the XZ2 Compact wins, as there are no direct competitors that can compete. However, despite its camera and scale positives, we feel the design is a bit too chunky and the software a little buggy. An accomplished but not best-of-best phone, unless small is your all.

Overall, then, the Xperia XZ2 Compact is a small but very powerful Android phone, one that if you are fan of smaller handsets, or have particularly small hands, will most likely appeal to you very much. It's not cheap and, actually, for the cost you will probably be expecting a more premium feel, but it totally delivers in terms of hardware and is without doubt worth considering if you are currently in the market for a new handset.
