The Engadget Score is a unique ranking of products based on extensive independent research and analysis by our expert editorial and research teams. The Global Score is arrived at only after curating hundreds, sometimes thousands of weighted data points (such as critic and user reviews).

Engadget Summary

Portable speakers have made it possible to take your favorite tunes everywhere, but always at the expense of quality sound. But speakers like the Jambox Mini and the SRS-X3 have bucked that trend, delivering solid sound in pocketable packages, and now they've been joined by the Soundfreaq Pocket Kick. It's small, loud and doesn't even skimp on the bass that much.

The Pocket Kick is a no-frills affair, packaged in a form factor that Android Police says "isn't anything remarkable" with grills that "almost feel like a tightly woven fabric" and rounded corners that iLounge says make sense for something "that’s made to fit in a pocket."

But when you take the SoundFreaq out of your pocket and start blasting some tunes, it becomes a little more remarkable, with "clear and articulate" sound that Android Police says offers "prominent" highs and "audible without being overbearing" mids. Bass is usually a problem for speakers of this size, but iLounge finds it offers "solid lows." Overall, Wired says the Pocket Kick is "largely unplagued" by the typical harshness and distortion offered by portable speakers, and iLounge says "there’s a richness to the overall output that’s very enjoyable" -- all at a price that undercuts most of the competition by as much as $50.
