When we decided we needed a good baby monitor there was a lot to choose from. From the standard radio wave devices with dedicated handsets and receivers to iOS apps that double as both the receiver and the handset. In my search I stumbled upon the Withings Smart Baby Monitor. The product page looked very good and the features too. So I started looking for reviews. That's when it all started sour. Some reviews gave it a 10 out of 10. Some just 2 out of 5 or whatever scale was applied. The reviews ranged from "DONT BUY VERY BAD" to "TOP NOTCH, MUST BUY". And this included customers. So I went on to look for other devices that fit our need: we have iOS devices we use daily so it needed to have an app. It had to go through WiFi. It had to be easy to use. Plus I wanted to be able to peek in from work or when Im away from home. Eventually it came down to a couple of "smart" baby monitors but they weren't as promising and feature rich (ease of use, away from home peeking) as the Withings looked. After some more reviewing and careful consideration we took the deep dive and just ordered it from the online Apple Store. At €249,99/$249,99 it was pricey and it better be good! Upon receiving I immediately hooked it up and started testing/playing around with it. At the time our baby wasn't born yet so I placed a stuffed animal in the baby bed to double as our soon to be born baby :) We tested it sporadically through the days and sometimes forgetting it was there. It all worked very well. When our little girl was eventually born we started using it heavily throughout the day. It was then that there were some problems arising with the device:1. Video would skip sometimes but most of the time looked very clear and smooth2. The app crashed more than it should3. The app sometimes annoys (see later)One is a matter of having a steady WiFi network. There is some interference in our house from a DECT but other than that the connection is steady. The app crashes were there a lot of the times. Sometimes with silly stuff like setting the app to monitor and flipping a switch on screen would crash it. Sometimes it would crash when you had the video feed open and an alert came in. The latest update has this all fixed and it now doesn't anymore. Other annoyances are the notifications. Even if you set the app to NOT monitor it still sends you movement and noise notifications. For the most part it works very well! It still sometimes crashes and the notifications still run amok (though you can just disable them all together). The device looks great (and very Apple like, white glossy) and will look beautiful on your baby's bed/crib. All in all I think its worth it and very convenient. If you have the money: buy it.Positives:- Good and smooth video- Device design- Notifications- Being able to have it remember 5 WiFi networks, so you can set it up at your parents house when they babysit and you can still peek in :)- Ease of use of the app- Infrared! So you can still see him/her in the dark- Various lights, and sounds to play remotely Negatives- app still not all that stable though doesnt crash as often since the March 31st update- notifications still can drive you crazy so set them up correctly (timings, etc)- no real zooming (though it says you can pan on the box and site), only optical zooming- high price
