Engadget Review

Xiaomi’s latest flagship offers tremendous value for €449. It has the latest Snapdragon processor, a modern design with a teardrop-shaped notch, and a better-than-expected camera system. The company’s Android skin, MIUI, is much-improved but still a divisive software experience. Overall it’s a great alternative to the OnePlus 6T (and eventually OnePlus 7) in Europe.

While it's lacking one or two premium features, the Xiaomi Mi 9 basically picks the best qualities of a 2019 flagship and sticks them into a well-made, affordable package.

Xiaomi Mi 9 is a thoughtfully designed and nicely executed flagship, but we can't shake the feeling most of the upgrades are incremental at best. The Mi 9 is settings no trends the way the Mi Mix 3 was. Instead it's all about Xiaomi catching up to market moods and trying to beat competitors at their own games. And that's fine, the Mi 9 indeed has one of the most versatile snappers around with great image and video quality and it easily undercuts most direct rivals on pricing too.

The Mi 9 also has the best haptic feedback of any Chinese phone I’ve used. It doesn’t match up to Apple or LG, and it isn’t used extensively throughout MIUI, but it’s a step above what companies like Oppo and OnePlus are doing. While this probably isn’t the most crucial feature in the world for most people, it goes some way to enhancing the sense that you’re getting far more than you’re paying for with the Mi 9.

A super-fast smartphone that’s yours for a much lower price than expected, the Mi 9 shows how quickly Xiaomi is maturing, and how much it’s working on creating smartphones that appeal to those outside China. The Mi 9 is a compelling, high-performance smartphone that’s sure to become one of the year’s best.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is a fantastic all-round device, offering many of the bells and whistles of high-end phones but without the price tag.

The price, performance and camera offered up by the Mi 9 should have purveyors of more costly rivals such as Apple, Huawei and Samsung worried.

The Xiaomi Mi 9 is the most compelling phone we've seen from Xiaomi so far. Although the design isn't a revolution from the Mi 8, it does feel like it's a lot more advanced. The camera offers more fun with that wide-angle lens, the in-display fingerprint scanner keeps up with the latest trends and the display notch and handling is better. We've also enjoyed it more than the Mi 8 Pro too - the software just seems better on this newer model.

The Mi 9’s positives are numerous; its screen is above reproach (even for the most discerning of eyeballs), it outperforms practically every other smartphone currently on the market, and that 48-megapixel camera is a terrific photographer’s companion, too. Indeed, Xiaomi’s Mi 9 represents the very pinnacle of smartphone technology, and I’m simply astounded that it does things this well, while costing so little in return. The Mi 9 is yet another five-star smartphone from Xiaomi, and It certainly doesn’t get any better than this.

So while the Mi 9 has some drawbacks, the value you’re getting is immense. Still, if you’re on the lookout for a flagship phone and you value a simpler, cleaner software experience, you might want to wait for the OnePlus 7.
