Verizon tests new fiber system that hits 10Gbps speeds
Verizon has announced that it has successfully completed field tests of its new super-fast fiber optic technology, dubbed the next-generation passive optical network (NG-PON2). It could offer users connectivity speeds anywhere from 10Gbps to 80Gbps some point "in the future", according to a Verizon press release. The new system utilizes an optical line terminal (OLT) capable of generating four wavelengths of light, each of which is able to transmit at an eye-watering 10Gbps down and 2.5Gbps up.
Google raises Gmail to 10GB free, 10-times increase since launching in 2004
Eight years ago one gigabyte of online storage was a remarkable thing. One gigabyte of email? Preposterous, but that's exactly what Google offered back in 2004 with the launch of Gmail, and now that factor is increasing. Current Gmail users were floating at around 7.5GB of storage but, as part of all the Google Drive hoopla, that storage is now officially up to 10GB. That's a lot of spam and, for those of us who are already paying extra for more storage, it's even more room to grow before we upgrade to the next tier.
T-Mobile's rumored 10GB data plan goes up a few dollars (update: confirmed)
It looks like those new webConnect plans from T-Mobile are still slated to go live this Sunday, but TmoNews -- which reported the original rumor -- has circled back with a minor bummer: the biggest of the plans has gone up a few dollars per month. There's no information on why the carrier has opted to suck a few more dollars out of your bank account, but the good news is that it's not too bad -- it's just another $5 (now $84.99) or another $4 (up to $67.99) if you're pairing it with a voice plan. Of course, both the 5GB and 10GB plans are overage-free -- it's just a question of how far you want to go before you start getting throttled. Update: TmoNews was on the money -- these prices are now live at T-Mobile.
