The era of 1TB microSD cards has begun

While processors can no longer keep up with Moore's law, memory manufacturers keep cramming more storage into ever-smaller spaces. Micron and Western Digital have both unveiled 1TB microSD memory cards that will let you significantly ramp up your smartphone storage, for a price. The products are arriving not long after Lexar started selling the first-ever 1TB SDXC memory cards.

Lexar has unveiled the first ever 1TB SDXC flash memory card for cameras that will actually go on sale to the public, the Professional 633x. It's a UHS-I rather than a much faster UHS-II model, but runs at the top limit for a UHS-I card at 95 MB/s (class 10). That should be fast enough for most cameras to capture 4K video (class V30) and a long burst of RAW photos.

SanDisk's tiny 1TB USB-C stick is the perfect smartphone upgrade

There's a kind of weird pleasure to be derived from the ever-shrinking size of data storage. Sandisk's latest prototype at CES 2018 continues the company's tradition of space crunching, with a one-terabyte USB-C dongle for your next laptop, tablet or Android phone. And, well, what else can I say? Compared to existing, sometimes bigger USB-C storage, it's adorably petite, even at this early stage. However, there's no word on when it'll appear in stores -- and how much it'll cost. I'd just caution any enthusiasm with the point that this could well be another gadget that's easy to lose.

Ahead of E3 (which kicks off this weekend) Sony has announced that it's cutting the price of the PlayStation 4, and giving it a new color. Between June 9th and June 17th you'll be able to get a gold PS4 Slim with a 1TB hard drive for $249. Last week rumors started popping up about such, and now it looks as though Sony has confirmed this one. According to The Verge, other accessories and games will be on sale during the same period, which makes this sound like a physical version of the PSN sales Sony typically runs during E3.

The $300 PlayStation 4 Slim bulks up with a 1TB hard drive

Sure, it's simple enough to swap out the standard 500 GB hard drive in your PlayStation 4 for a bigger one, but sometimes you just don't want to go through the hassle. Well, thanks to the PS4 Slim being packed with a 1 TB drive as standard equipment now, that shouldn't be an issue in the future. Amazon is already cutting prices on the 500GB models (from $300 to around $250), and the 1TB flavor rocks a $300 MSRP. A 1TB PS4 Pro is still $400, however, and depending on your situation, might be the better buy at this point.

Comcast's 1TB data caps start to roll out nationwide

Comcast's data restrictions are going from testing to reality for most of its customers. Its 'XFINITY Terabyte Internet Data Usage Plan' is already in place in a number of places, and will roll out to 18 new markets (including California, Michigan, Florida and others listed on its FAQ) beginning November 1st. For its part, the ISP claims 99 percent of customers use less than 1TB of data per month, and that median use is just 75MB (correction: 75GB). Of course, with digitally delivered games and software, and streaming video that is increasingly coming in HD and 4K resolutions, that could change rapidly.

Is your new iPhone hissing? Is your replacement Galaxy Note not exploding? Regardless, we shall begin. This week we saw plenty of new (and old-school) cameras at Photokina, one editor tried to improve his odds on dating apps by outsourcing the task, and one of Japan's pro-league basketball courts got covered in LED screens. We also had our collective minds blown by the mere notion of a 1TB SD card. Arguably, our minds are easily blown. Let's After Math.

If you handle a lot of 4K video, you'll know that most available SD cards will struggle to handle all of your high-quality footage. The two-year old SanDisk 512GB SD card might take the edge off somewhat, but that isn't all that Western Digital, owner of the SanDisk brand, has got to offer. Today, the storage giant unveiled what it calls the "world's first" 1TB SD card. It's only a prototype, but already the company is touting the card's ability to adequately handle 4K, 8K, VR and 360-degree video when it officially becomes available.

Do you have a special someone on your Christmas list who deserves a shiny new console this holiday season? Even if you're just shopping for yourself, there's a new Xbox One bundle that might catch your eye. Microsoft is offering the 1TB version with three games for the cost of the console alone. The trio of titles includes Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, Rare Replay and Ori and the Blind Forest. All of that will set you back $399 when this so-called Holiday Bundle goes on sale in October.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but orange and grey is so last season, every season. The 1TB PlayStation 4 officially arrives in North America on November 6th in a specially designed Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 bundle that includes the game, Nuk3town bonus map, console and matching controller. It costs $450 in the US and CAD$550 in Canada, and pre-orders are available today. Seriously though, we won't judge anyone for snagging this thing -- 1TB is a lot of storage, after all.

Among the bullet storms and massive explosions of today's Xbox conference, Microsoft unveiled a limited edition, Halo 5-branded 1TB Xbox One bundle, and it's so, so shiny. The bundle is available for pre-order today (priced at $500) and it drops on October 20th. Microsoft launched the standard 1TB console for $400 back in June, complete with a new controller. That console isn't so shiny -- because it's matte.

  • Sony's 1TB PS4 priced at £350 in the UK

Sony will soon launch its 1TB PS4 in Europe and now, we've got a price-tag for the UK: £349.99. That's the same price as Microsoft's 1TB Xbox One, which should make an interesting head-to-head this autumn. To sweeten the deal, Sony will be bundling its PlayStation TV microconsole with the new, larger capacity PS4 for a limited time, meaning you can easily stream your games to another room. It's unclear, however, if this "Ultimate Player" will also include the revisions made to the 500GB PS4 in Japan. An internal redesign made that console 10 lighter and 8 percent more power efficient, which I'm sure PlayStation fans in Europe would appreciate too. Regardless, this is a hefty storage upgrade that should give you space for those free PS Plus games every month.

Sony and Microsoft had a ton of games to show off at E3 this year, so we didn't see much in the way of hardware announcements. Microsoft's 1TB Xbox One was unveiled before the event and today, we're finally seeing the same move from Sony. On its European blog, the company revealed that its new "Ultimate Player Edition" PS4 with double storage will debut across Europe on July 15th. There's no word on a wider release just yet, but given the model has already appeared in an FCC filing, a US launch seems inevitable.

Microsoft has officially launched a matte black 1TB Xbox One that doubles the storage of the standard model, as rumored. It has a new controller in black or camouflage that packs a 3.5mm stereo jack so you can use third-party headsets, assuming you don't like the included model. The controller, which also leaked out earlier, has slightly redesigned bumpers "for more consistent performance" and takes firmware updates over-the-air. Microsoft is also throwing in a copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection for a limited time.

I spy with my little eye an Xbox One with 500GB more storage and a controller with a built-in 3.5mm headset port. Amazon has what appears to be a placeholder page for a 1TB Xbox One bundled with the newly designed controller and Halo: The Master Chief Collection, all for $400. It has a release date of June 15th. The listing is tucked away on Amazon and it doesn't include any photos, but it wouldn't be surprising if Microsoft is preparing an announcement for its E3 showcase -- also on June 15th. A Microsoft spokesperson had the following to say about the listing: "We're gearing up for an exciting E3 where we'll showcase more games and experiences. We have nothing further to share at this time."

  • The PS4 will have a 1TB hard drive version very soon

Coming right on time after Microsoft's leak a few hours ago, some pre-E3 Sony news just popped up. An FCC filing reveals two new versions of the PS4 are on the way, and one of them is its first to come stock with a 1TB hard drive inside, twice the size of the current one. PlayStation gamers have already been able to crack the system open and swap in a larger/faster storage unit, but if you'd prefer to skip the hassle the option of having one from the jump will be nice, and current games fill up a 500GB unit all too quickly.

  • Dropbox Pro plan now offers 10x the storage for the same price

Beefing up your free Dropbox account with extra space isn't hard if you know what to look for, but the company just smartly streamlined its Pro plans in case you need even more cloud action. Kiss those tricky tiered plans goodbye: all that's left now is a 1TB option that'll set you back $9.99 a month (or $99 a year). Not a bad deal considering that's how much you would've paid Dropbox monthly for 100GB of cloud storage just a few days ago, and the company is sweetening the pot with some neat new sharing and security features too. Left your laptop at that seedy diner over in Toledo? A few clicks is all it takes to remotely wipe all the synced files that were still on it. You can exercise a bit more caution with your shared links too by slapping password protection and expiration dates on them, too. Really, it's those features that Dropbox hopes will give it an edge over some larger rivals -- Google Drive's monthly rate plans dipped to similar levels earlier this year, while Amazon still costs a ton compared to both.
