You could watch actual World Cup soccer games on TV this weekend, but wouldn't you rather dive into 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa instead? Good thing then that Amazon's offering up a 20 percent discount on the Xbox and Wii versions, making right now the moment to live out your dream of seeing Uruguay finally take the cup.

  • AT&T U-verse will have ESPN 3D at launch, for a fee

We're just two days away from the launch of the first 3D channel in the US, and U-verse will be ready. The third broadcaster to announce it will carry ESPN 3D after DirecTV and Comcast, it is the first to charge an additional fee for the privilege. $10 per month adds the "3D Technology Package" to your U-verse viewing options -- similar to Comcast and different from DirecTV's approach, it works with all the boxes but will require users to manually switch to 3D mode on their TVs -- which at the moment will consist only of ESPN 3D, although the company promises its goal is to offer a "wide range" of 3D content just like its current HD lineup (which it also charges an extra $10 to access.) Have U-verse but haven't shelled out for a 3DTV, glasses, and this new channel? There's still the Multiview app to look forward to, with four ESPN channels on screen at once and coverage in up to six different languages you won't miss a single flop or injured star player during the entire tournament, we promise.

  • Red Dead Redemption rides atop UK charts for third week

Ain't nuffin' gettin' between the Brits and a tumble around the Wild West, partner. Not only is Red Dead Redemption the top selling game in the UK for the third week in a row (despite a 22 percent dip in sales) but, according to Chart-Track, it sold more units than the all-format chart's numbers two through seven combined. Red Dead Redemption's feat is made even more impressive by the knowledge that second place finisher 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa's sales slipped a measly three percent. Rounding out the rest of the top five are UFC 2010: Undisputed, Just Dance (of course!) and Wii Fit Plus. The complete UK top 10 can be found after the break. 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa held its top spot on the UK all-formats chart for a second week in a row. Meanwhile, like a good showgirl, Wii-exclusive Just Dance worked its way back into second, pushing Super Street Fighter IV down the stairs -- all the way to sixth. Modern Warfare 2 got back into the fight this week and reached third place, thanks to "energetic promotions centered around the special edition versions," according to Chart-Track. The release of the "Stimulus Package" maps on other platforms probably didn't hurt, either. Wii Fit Plus and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 round out the top five. The complete UK top 10 can be found after the break. Source – FIFA World Cup Scores 2nd Week at No1 [GFK Chart-Track] Source – Latest UK Software Charts [GFK Chart-Track]

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa kicked off to a mighty fine start on the UK all-formats chart this week. Of course, the real news would have been had the footie franchise not scored the top spot during its launch week. Super Street Fighter IV also enjoyed a solid premiere in second place. And, lest you think that the UK had somehow lost the urge to shake its groove thing, the Wii-exclusive Just Dance slipped a mere 5 percent to third from its silver spot last week. Sam Fisher took a terrible tumble from first to fourth this week, with Splinter Cell: Conviction experiencing a 37 percent drop in sales. Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, which rounds out the top five thanks to its PS3 and PC release a few weeks back, saw a 32 percent drop in sales. Yes, Just Dance is an unstoppable beast, with exasperating stamina that rivals that of a chav on an IV drip of Red Bull. Check out the complete UK top 10 after the break. • FIFA World Cup South Africa demo coming to PSN and Xbox Live this week

PSN and Xbox Live will score a demo for 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa this Thursday, April 8, worldwide. The demo grants those interested in the footie franchise a chance to play as Spain or Italy and offers an optional two-button control scheme for newcomers. Beyond the demo date, EA also announced the 28 artists featured on the soundtrack for the game, which we've listed after the break. In a clear sign of racism, there are no tracks by "prawn" musicians. Shame on you, EA. Shame on you. It's not just the "Earth Cup," but the World Cup, you know? Next thing you know, Americans will label something that has participants from only two countries as the "World Series."

  • More FIFA World Cup 2010 media than you can shake a red card at

We know, we know -- we've been desperately waiting for more new media on April's South Africa-themed FIFA release as well, and today we've finally got some more. Arriving care of GDC 2010, EA Sports released the trailer you see above and the smattering of new screens seen below (for Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 as well as the Wii). The trailer urges players to take their own country's team to the World Cup, though we should issue a word of warning to those of you in the contiguous United States who choose to bring our fine nation to the top: it's just a game. Okay, okay, sorry -- we were just joshin' ya! We suppose it's possible. Maybe after the robots take over. Maybe. %Gallery-88011%%Gallery-88010%

Footy aficionados fancying themselves some world class football will get just that in EA's newly announced spinoff, FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa. Simultaneously releasing on Xbox 360, PS3, PSP and Wii, this special installment -- only once every four years people! -- in EA's ongoing franchise features all of the 2010 World Cup's 199 qualifying round national teams and all ten of the official South African event stadiums. There's also an online-enabled World Cup Mode, where you can take any national team (dibs on Brazil!) and progress from the qualifying rounds right up to the final match. Wii players will get "an art style that celebrates the cultural vibrancy of the first FIFA World Cup to be held in Africa" (so, pretty much, it'll look like a cartoon) and their own special game mode in Zakumi's Dream Team, where players create custom teams and take their virtual squads on the road against the 32 participating World Cup teams. No specific PSP version features have been revealed. FIFA World Cup 2010 South Africa is being developed by EA Canada in Burnaby, B.C. and is scheduled to hit the pitch on April 27 in the US and April 30 in Europe and Asia. %Gallery-84006%

  • Sony and FIFA team up to make the World Cup 3D

It's no secret that plenty of companies are hoping that 2010 will be the year of 3D, and it looks like Sony has now gotten a big boost by lining up a partnership with one of the biggest events of the year: the FIFA World Cup. As the pair have announced today, the new arrangement will see at least 25 World Cup matches produced in 3D using Sony's 3D cameras, which will be viewable through a variety of means. That includes special public viewing events in seven cities around the world (none in North America, unfortunately), an "Official 3D Film" that will be previewed at Sony Stores and other retail outlets and, last but not least, a Blu-ray of said film that will be made available at some point following the World Cup. This won't be the first time a soccer match has been broadcast in 3D, however, and it looks like it won't be your only option for catching some games in 3D next year either. [Thanks, Matt]

  • 11 vs. 11 possible for EA's FIFA 2010

EA is hoping to support 11 vs. 11 play in time for their FIFA 2010 World Cup edition. This will allow them to have a "Virtual World Cup" with 11 of the best players from each country representing. FIFA 08 producer Joe Booth says, "In the long term we have big plans. We'd like for the 2010 World Cup to have a virtual World Cup at the same time, and build an organization in each territory that finds the best 11 players and flies them out to South Africa, and have a full-on tournament there." Booth says that over the next two iterations of the game they're focusing on a "Be A Pro" feature which has the player taking care of one man on the field. Booth says they're trying to get something that feels "offline." It would be cool after EA finishes the whole tournament in 2010 they edit the footage to get the best angles possible for the game and put it on the marketplace ... for free. That might be fun to watch.
