Enter at Your Own Rift: My 2013 wish list
The end of the year and the beginning of a new one is the traditional time to take stock of the past and make plans for the future, no? I thought RIFT had a banner year, especially in pushing out a great expansion less than two years after launch. Trion Worlds has continued to get those meaty content updates out, fleshing out the now-annual celebrations and growing the game in new and often-surprising ways. Really, we have such a wealth of options and content on which to feast, so you'll really have to excuse me as I ignore everything the studio's done to date and talk about what I'd like to see done, changed, or added in the new year. Yup, it's time for a RIFT wish list in this Fae Yule season, straight from my fingers to Santa Crucia's home at the Death Pole!
Nokia Lumia 920 coming to Vodafone UK in early 2013
Windows Phone 8's arrival in the UK seemed to catch Vodafone on the hoof, with the company merely offering vague hints that it'd stock the Lumia 820, HTC 8X and 8S in the future. Now, the network has announced that it'll add the Lumia 920 to that roster when the trio quartet launch in early 2013. Perhaps Vodafone were just waiting for the company to rectify the fuzzy cat picture issue that early-adopters had been suffering from.
Google Zeitgeist tells the search story of 2012: Whitney, One Direction and iPads
Google's revealed its annual list of the year's top searches, with the death of Whitney Houston gleaning more requests than even the Gangnam Style juggernaut and site powering over 1.2 trillion searches. One Direction topped the most searched image category, while events like Hurricane Sandy and the Olympics made an impact both in the primary top ten and the people we searched for. The top searched-for gadgets saw a conspicuous absence of the iPhone 5, likely due to its launch in the second half of the year. The new iPad (well, iPad 3) claiming first place, followed by Samsung's Galaxy S III. Amped Wireless announces TAN 1 WiFi adapter for Windows 8 for CES 2013
Amped Wireless' range of WiFi gear that's had a good dose of spinach has swelled to include a WiFi adapter for your Windows 8 tablet or laptop. Clipping onto your device and connecting over USB, it promises to give you three times the distance of your built-in wireless module, letting you slurp down those cat videos from the furthest regions of your home. It'll make its first public appearance at CES, with the company promising an arrival in stores shortly afterward -- but rest assured, given our credentials at the show, we'll be giving it the Engadget treatment come January. Nissan Leaf to go farther and cost less in 2013
Wondering what the coming year will hold for Nissan's flagship electric car? Well, as expected, there's a small, but not negligible range boost in store. On a full charge, and with all the other electronics turned off, the 2013 Leaf should be able to eke 228 km (142 miles) out of its lithium ion pack, which is up from the 200 km (124 miles) of last year's model. There's also a new battery gauge that tells the driver how much juice is left in percentage points, instead of just miles remaining. The price of entry has also been seriously lowered, putting the EV within the reach of many more consumers. In Japan, the base model will cost just ¥2.5 million (roughly $31,000), significantly less than the 2012 edition which had a starting price of just under ¥3 million (around $37,000). While there's no guarantee that price drop with carry over stateside, we'd say it's a pretty good bet that a cheaper Leaf in our future. Sadly, there's no word about that fancy inductive charger.
RuneScape's oracle predicts through 2013
With the clock running down on 2012, one might be forgiven for overlooking the rest of the year in favor of what the next will bring. That's a mistake with RuneScape, as the devs have promised that they've saved the best for last with a couple of sizable updates to the game. On tap for the remainder of the year is the addition of a super-tough Grandmaster-level quest, player-owned ports, and a very lonely dog that will need help come Christmas-time. Looking ahead to 2013, Jagex revealed its ambitious plans for a variety of content as well as something called RuneScape Next Gen. The description of the latter is quite intriguing: "Featuring our innovative new browser-based technology and with big investments in graphics and gameplay, RuneScape is set to take a monumental leap forward in 2013. Higher visual and audio fidelity, improved camera mechanics and a much more customizable interface system are but a taste of what you can expect."
Verizon CFO: LTE rollout should wrap up by mid-2013, months ahead of expectations
Most of Verizon's strategy talk surrounding its long-term LTE plans has conservatively aimed at upgrading all existing coverage areas to 4G by the end of 2013. If we're to believe a CFO Fran Shammo presentation, the carrier may have underpromised and overdelivered: the executive now expects LTE to reach the whole network by the middle of next year, or as much as half a year sooner than first thought. What prompted the quicker rollout wasn't mentioned, although Shammo was eager to point out a surprisingly strong reception to Verizon's (frequently mandatory) shared plans as well as the ample number of airwaves that came from a spectrum transfer deal with cable providers. Having a lot of customers on premium plans with the capacity to support them tends to help with faster expansion, we'd say. No matter the exact reasoning, the shortened schedule could underscore the advantage of Verizon's early start on LTE versus those carriers taking a more relaxed pace.
Blizzard 'working hard' to launch StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm in first half of 2013
Blizzard is hoping to push the first StarCraft 2 expansion, Heart of the Swarm, out the door during the first half of 2013. Blizzard head Mike Morhaime made the announcement during Activision's earnings call, saying the studio is "working hard towards a first half 2013 launch."Heart of the Swarm is set to add several improvements to StarCraft 2, including multiplayer progression and new social features.
