  • Club Nintendo adds a rainbow of 3DS XL charging cradles

Those bored of staid black will find the selection of charging cradles for the 3DS XL handheld greatly expanded come Halloween, though none of these new colors will be available to you if you aren't a Club Nintendo member. Like the original, black cradle, this new line of more colorful cradles makes charging the 3DS XL slightly more convenient. Instead of having to plug a small cord into your handheld, the cradle allows players to charge their device by simply dropping the machine in place. The only new addition found in these new cradles is their appearance; new models are available in blue, yellow, red, green and white. Those of you who are already Club Nintendo members will be able to order the newly-colorful cradles for 500 points once they go on sale on October 31. If you aren't a Club Nintendo member, the process of signing up is quick and fairly painless, but keep in mind that those points are based on how many games you have purchased and redeemed through Club Nintendo. If you're only signing up to grab a new cradle, you'll need to buy at least six games to earn the necessary points.

If it hasn't achieved it already, the 3DS XL is making a serious bid to become the gaming system with the most assorted liveries in the history of ever and ever. With all other colors utilized, Nintendo is bringing orange and turquoise variants to Japan on November 28. Or to be more specific, "orange and black" and "turquoise and black" variants since they're "and black" on the inside. Both units are priced ¥19,900 (around $205) and come with a 4GB memory card, a black drawstring carrying pouch, and an AC adapter. As ever, these units are limited to Japan for now, but a least North American livery lovers can reportedly look forward to the beautiful Zelda 3DS XL.

Nintendo unveiled a stunning limited edition, gold 3DS XL for The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds that's confirmed to be coming to Europe on November 22. There's no word yet on it coming to North America, but who'd stop something as utterly gorgeous as this from being in our hands? Only someone terrible, surely. The version coming to Europe comes with a download code for the game, and is priced £200 on Nintendo's web store. Moving onto the game itself, its packaged cover art features a reversible front cover, one side in gold and the other full color. Also, Nintendo recently revealed UK pre-orders come with a miniature treasure chest that, yes, plays that music. The Zelda 3DS XL isn't the only one announced for Europe, because the continent is getting its white-gloved hands on the white Luigi-rific 3DS XL. The polka-Luigi unit came to Japan earlier this year, and it's due now in Europe on November 1, priced £180.

  • Pokemon 3DS XLs announced for west, cloud-based Bank storage service unveiled

Nintendo announced a number of new details for Pokemon X and Y in this morning's Direct broadcast, including two 3DS XL units for North America and Europe. Unlike the red and gold units coming to Japan, the red and blue 3DS XLs will launch on September 27, two weeks prior to the game's arrival on October 12. They'll be available for $200 and won't come with the game bundled in. No word if bundles with the game included will launch later. More curious is the announcement of Pokemon Bank, a 3DS cloud-based app that lets players store their pocket monsters online. The service, which players will have to stump an annual fee for, allows trainers to store 3,000 Pokemon, including those from future Pokemon games and from multiple copies of Pokemon games. It's tied to a linked app, Poke Transporter, that can transfer Pokemon into the Bank from certain previous games, such as Black, White, Black 2, and White 2. Pokemon Bank is confirmed to arrive in North America and Europe later this year, and will come with a free trial period. Rounding up the reveals is a wee touch of nostalgia: In addition to receiving one of X and Y starter Pokemon Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie at the beginning of the game, players also get one of Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle, the starter critters from Game Boy entries Red and Blue. Each returning starter can Mega Evolve too, which is mega news, really. Pokemon X and Y are due worldwide on October 12. If you want to catch up on this morning's Direct, head on past the break for the video.

  • How would you change Nintendo's 3DS XL?

Nintendo's 3DS XL had a bigger screen, was more comfortable to hold and doubled its internal storage. What did it lack? No secondary analog stick, a compelling digital content offering and any sort of oomph under the hood. Those three were nearly deal breakers for our reviewer, who said the handheld was good, but not enough to convince you to upgrade. But was our own Mr. Smith right to damn the console with his faint praise? Share your experiences of owning this device with us in the comments below.

Nintendo's handheld has found its little black dress, which should slim down its XL size. The portable's latest color was officially announced as coming to North America on August 11, alongside Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. The new skin popped up in a couple of adverts last week. According to the House of Mario's site, the handheld sits at the standard 3DS XL pricepoint of $200.

A pair of stunning Pokemon X and Y 3DS XLs is coming to lucky, lucky Japan. If you've been holding out on a 3DS for X and Y, or on upgrading to a 3DS XL, you'll likely be crossing all available fingers and toes (and fingers with toes) for the Xerneas-Yveltal Blue and Premium Gold units to head west. The portables, unveiled along with a new trailer at this week's Japan Expo in Paris, include a 4GB SD card and a pre-installed copy of either X or Y. They're both priced ¥22,000 ($219), but the Gold number is limited to Pokemon Center stores in the country. Check them out in full glossiness past the break. Another new video courtesy of Game Freak's Junichi Musuda goes into how France inspired the charms of the new Kalos region. You can definitely see Paris in the cobbled streets and, er, the Eiffel Tower-a-like of Lumiose City. Musuda also unveiled another new critter, a Ghost and Steel-type Pokemon called Honedge who for all extents and purposes looks like a floating sword with an eye - how do they come up with this stuff? Pokemon X and Y choose the entire world on October 12. We've checked in with The Pokemon Company to see if they'll arrive here with any special 3DS units in tow. %Gallery-193178%

Nintendo is shaking up its color-coded Wii U system by introducing a white 32GB Premium set to Japan. Starting July 13, the Premium set will be available in both black and white in the country. The new set is priced the same as the original black one at ¥31,500 (around $313), and comes with the same accessories. Going by Nintendo's promotion on its site, the GamePad, its stylus, and the console stand are white in the new set, while the GamePad cradle and GamePad stand remain black. When approached about the white 32GB set, a Nintendo spokesperson told us "this is a Japanese announcement," and that "all other territories will make announcements if relevant." Nintendo also unveiled an enhanced GamePad battery replacement today, which is coming to Japan on July 25, while a new fast-charging Wiimote pack arrives alongside the white Premium set on July 13. Altogether more colorful than the Wii U variants, albeit in different shades of green, is the Luigi-themed 3DS XL. The polka-plumber skin unveiled last month is also dated for Japan, and will pipe up on retail shelves on July 18.

  • Metallic Red 3DS, Eevee 3DS XL evolving in Japan

    05.15.2013

In Japan-always-seems-to-have-the-coolest-3DS-skins news, the country's getting a new Metallic Red 3DS as well as - and we admit we're particularly jealous of this one - a very limited edition 3DS XL skin based on Eevee, the adorable critter from the Pokémon series. The striped 3DS XL, which rather resembles 1960s wallpaper, was spotted by Hachima being advertized in one of Japan's official Pokémon Center stores. Like last year's Charizard 3DS XL, the ¥18,900 system ($185) is only available via reservations, which then go into a lottery to win the chance to buy the system. In other words, this is one of those times when the words 'limited edition' genuinely apply. The lottery is being held until June 3. More freely available is the Metallic Red 3DS below, which will be released for ¥15,000 ($147) on June 13. Like the Light Blue and Gloss Pink models announced earlier this year, it includes a 4GB SD card.

A new, pink 3DS XL glams up the UK on May 31. As Official Nintendo Magazine reveals, it isn't the same as the pink-and-white number which recently re-toured North America. There's no word yet on other regions. While Nintendo recently announced the Animal Crossing and Pikachu 3DS XLs for the west, for now, much like one of the Queen's hats, this particular portable is big, pink, and only in the UK.

Starting today, Nintendo is offering the 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro through its online store. The listing suddenly appeared two days ago, so we asked Nintendo if this was a mistake. A company representative confirmed with Joystiq today that, "yes, the posting is accurate and the accessory will begin shipping from our online store today."We also inquired about availability at retailers; the previous iteration, the Circle Pad Pro for the original 3DS, was a GameStop exclusive. "There are no plans to sell this accessory at other retail locations at this time," the Nintendo representative confirmed with Joystiq. Online is the only way to get it – for now, anyway. The 3DS XL Circle Pad Pro add-on is priced at $20, a peripheral that adds an additional analog stick compatible with games like Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Resident Evil: Revelations, Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater, Kid Icarus: Uprising and more.

Is it worth adding a lop-sided $20 piece of plastic to your already-substantial 3DS XL in order to gain a second analog thumb stick? It's a good question and finally one worth asking now that Nintendo has announced that the currently Japan-only Circle Pad Pro for the XL will start shipping in the States tomorrow. When we went hands-on last year, we found that it added predictable amounts of girth and also blocked the cartridge port, but compensated by making the handheld more comfortable to use, not least by adding larger shoulder buttons as well as the thumb stick. It's also worth pointing out that the smaller 3DS version of the accessory enabled better controls for left-handed players in Kid Icarus, so there could be some subtler benefits too. We've embedded our hands-on video after the break, so you just need to hold a $20 bill up against your screen and decide which looks better.

The system retails for $219.99 and comes with a copy of the game pre-loaded on its 4GB SD card. The system, which bears a tiled pattern of Tom Nook leaves, houses, and fruit, will be released alongside the game on June 9 in North America and June 14 in Europe.

UK retailer ShopTo is listing the same Animal Crossing: New Leaf 3DS XL bundle that came to Japan when the game arrived there last year. The site's description says it includes a 4GB SD card, and prices the polka-dot bundle at £190, which is the same price the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Fire Emblem: Awakening XL bundles are going for in the region.Nintendo hasn't announced an Animal Crossing: New Leaf bundle for Europe (or North America), and ShopTo's listing has the same Japanese-emblazoned box as above, rather than a new English one. Having said that, its emergence just ahead of a Nintendo Direct broadcast is a bit suspect. Maybe we'll frond out tomorrow if the bundle is coming to town along with New Leaf in June.Update: While it still appears in a Google search, ShopTo has since removed the listing.
