MSI gaming laptop packs next-gen NVIDIA graphics and '3K' display into Ultrabook thickness
A nice little surprise here at CeBIT: A 15.6-inch laptop from MSI that gave us an early look at one of NVIDIA's unannounced 2014 laptop GPUs. MSI's reps at the event wouldn't reveal anything about the new graphics chip (which we guess is based on NVIDIA's Maxwell architecture) except that it should be able to handle many of the latest games at high settings on their unit's optional "3K" (2,880 x 1,620) display. The laptop itself is called the GS60 Ghost Pro and it's a pleasure to look at and to hold -- it's just three quarters of an inch thick (19.5mm) and 4.4 pounds (1.99kg) in weight. Check out the gallery below and you'll see that the machine has an understated design that should help it to appeal not only to gamers but also to power users looking for configurations up to Core i7, dual SSD storage (in Super RAID, if you wish) with additional HDD, plus 802.11ac WiFi. Expect units to start shipping in April priced between 1,600 and 2,000 euros ($2,200 to $2,800) depending on your spec choices.
RED Scarlet captures Hollywood-style street scene at 120fps (video)
The bad news is that the RED Scarlet is a still a prototype two and a half years after it was announced. The good news is that the folks at RED have shot some stunning test footage with the 8x fixed lens version to show off the Scarlet's prowess at 120 frames per second. Remember, every one of those frames is a 3072 x 1620 RAW masterpiece -- and while the video after the break obviously can't deliver that resolution, it can nevertheless give you a feel for the slow-mo power of this thing. 3K's Windows CE-powered RazorBook 400 netbook goes half price, still won't sell
Man, remember just how great of a deal this looked like when it launched at $299 in May of last year? Funny how things change so rapidly, huh? Well, it's pretty comical unless you're 3K Computers, who now has a pathetic excuse of a netbook that it can only sell by slashing the asking price from $299 to under $150. Nearly web-wide, legitimate e-tailers are selling the RazorBook 400 CE for less than half of its original MSRP, and we're not even a full year into its life cycle. But really, who's jonesing for a CE-powered netbook (we could just stop there, truthfully) with a diminutive 7-inch display, 128MB of RAM and a processor that's slower (in clock speed, anyway) than that found in HTC's Touch Diamond? RED delivers new rendering of Scarlet 3K camera
From the word go, amateurs and professionals alike were hot for RED's (relatively) minuscule Scarlet. After all, can you really go wrong with a 3K camera in one hand and a Dairy Queen dipped cone in the other? (No, no you cannot.) Nevertheless, those anxious to see more as the run-up to its early 2009 release continues can feast their eyes on an all new rendering. 3K Computers' RazorBook 400 gets hands-on treatment
The sub-$300 RazorBook 400 is far from being the most potent netbook on the block, but that succulent price tag will likely compensate in the eyes of some folks. If you're one such character, you'll probably want to take a look at the first hands-on video with said unit. Predictably, this bad boy is ridiculously small, and if the 45 second boot-up is any indication, it's pretty sluggish as well. Video is just after the break.
3K Computers gets extra official with RazorBook 400: now $299
Our feelings are largely unchanged about the lackluster RazorBook 400, but hacking a full Benjamin from the asking price is sure to get people looking. Yep, the subnote we previously heard would run around $400 has just been officially announced by 3K Computers at $299. Specs wise, everything is remaining the same -- less than 2-pounds, 7-inch display, 4GB of internal flash and a promised boot-up time of under 8-seconds -- but it just got a lot harder to brush this one off and look elsewhere.
RED unveils Scarlet mini camcorder
RED just unleashed its promised Scarlet "pocket professional" camera at NAB 2008, and it's certainly a sight to see. The teensy 3K resolution camcorder is based on a 2 / 3-inch Mysterium X sensor, can shoot at 1 to 120 FPS and records to dual CompactFlash cards, which can handle up to 100MB per second of REDCODE RAW HD video. You can preview your shot on the 4.8-inch LCD, and there's a 8x RED zoom lens included. HMDI, HD-SDI, FireWire 800 and USB 2.0 inputs are built in, and the device is compatible with "many" RED ONE accessories. WiFi control is also included. In typical RED fashion, the only promises about the final product is that "specifications, delivery dates and design are subject to change... count on it," but this is certainly a good start. No pre-orders are being accepted at this time, but the price is purportedly to going to be a bit under $3,000, and the release is slated for early 2009.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
