You knew it was coming, didn't you? Given that the LED-backlit 42PFL9803H just went on sale across the pond a few weeks back, it was only a matter of time before someone got their grubby paws around it and snapped a few photos. ElectricPig managed to do just that, and aside from giving us a look at the new set, they also stated that it was practically as good -- if not better -- that Pioneer's KURO in terms of contrast. 'Course, that's exactly what Philips was aiming for all along, but it's good to hear we've finally got some competition in the darkness space, regardless. Have a look in the read link below.

If the flashy 42PFL9903D Aurea II is a bit too rich for your blood, Philips is offering you one other option before you bolt to some other brand. The LED-backlit 42PFL9803H, which was spotted (and lookin' good, might we add) at IFA earlier this year, is finally on sale across the pond. An outlay of £2,299 ($3,649) nets you a 42-inch 1080p panel with a 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and a 128-region local dimming system. Furthermore, you'll get four HDMI 1.3 ports, an Ethernet jack for streaming in media over a network and at least a small amount of bragging rights.[Via TrustedReviews]

Late in August, we got wind of an elusive Aurea II HDTV that was in development from Philips. Now, we're looking at the official result of that labor. The 42-inch Philips Aurea II (or 42PFL9903D, if you'd prefer) packs a 1080p panel, the latest version of the Perfect Pixel HD engine, a dynamic contrast ratio of 30,000:1 and a wicked fast two-millisecond response time. Reportedly, the main differences between this set and the original Aurea is a thinner frame, more curvaceous corners and an ever-so-slightly updated design. For those with the cash to blow, it'll be available for a stiff £2,499 ($3,967) this month.

We knew Philips' LED-backlit 42PFL9803 would be showcasing itself here soon, but for those of you unable to travel overseas in order to see it, TechRadar has provided some first hand details. Over at IFA, they were able to feast their eyes upon the stunning LCD HDTV, and results were mighty impressive. In short, they confirmed that the black levels were "phenomenally deep," and the 100Hz / 120Hz (depending on your region of the world) technology did a great job of nixing jaggies. It's tough to say whether this thing can hold a candle to the mighty KURO plasma, but based on these initial impressions, it's doing pretty darn good for an LCD. Don't take our word for it, though -- tap the read link and be your own judge.[Thanks, David]

  • Philips' new Essence, FlatTV and Aurea LCD sets

While our primary drool allotment will be directed at Philips' new 8mm LCD concept, Philips also has some new for-realsies LCDs here at IFA potentially worth your time. Leading off the pack is the LED-backlit 42PFL9803 FlatTV (pictured), a 42-inch set with 128 segments of LED for a purported 2,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. The set runs at 100Hz, has a 17-bit "Color Booster" for a wide gamut, and even does a bit of 2nd gen Ambilight for good measure. Essence (42PES0001) is another 42-inch, 1080p display, but stakes its claim on thinness, measuring 38mm (1.5-inches) deep, and has a single cable running to a connectivity hub which doles out the audio, video and power. 100Hz and wide color gamut are all here. Finally, Philips is doing up a new generation of Aurea sets with new 37-inch and 42-inch 1080p displays, which offer up "Active Frame" transparent frames to reflect the Ambilight surrounding the set. The displays also offer 100Hz, 30,000:1 contrast ratios and 2ms response times. No word on price or availability for any of these, which is starting to sound like the official theme of IFA 2008.%Gallery-30668%

We can't say for certain that this is the Essence TV we heard rumored last week, but we wouldn't be shocked one iota if it were. The Philips 42PFL9803, which has actually be around in at least name since earlier this summer, has just been granted an EISA award. The LED-backlit 42-inch HDTV reportedly features a 2,000,000:1 (dynamic) contrast ratio, the company's own LUX LED technology and a jaw-dropping €2,999.99 ($4,407) price tag. We're hearing it's on track for a September release, but hopefully IFA will confirm / deny.
