Twin GeForce 8800M GTX upgrade now available for Dell's XPS M1730
If you pulled the trigger early on an XPS M1730, you may have gotten "stuck" with "just" a GeForce 8700M GT or similar. If you just can't be behind the times, Dell is finally offering a solution with the GeForce 8800M GTX upgrade kit. Said package includes dual SLI 1GB GDDR3 PCI Express graphics card designed specifically to boost frame rates and install all sorts of Vista-compatible bragging rights. If you're comfortable with doing the swap yourself, the upgrade price sits at a penny under $1,100. For those seeking professional help, you'll be coughing up $1,218.99. Hands on Clevo's OEM-ready 15- and 17-inch gaming rigs
You may not know who Clevo is but rest assured your brand-named laptop vendors like Alienware, Voodoo, Hypersonic, and Sager surely do. The Taiwanese OEM just unleashed its new 17-inch pixel M570TU (pictured) and 15-inch M860TU rigs offering WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) resolutions right here at CeBIT. The 17-incher features Intel's "new generation" processor and chipset, 512MB of nVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX graphics, a 2 megapixel webcam, Blu-ray (or HD DVD drive too for suckers), TV Tuner, TPM, fingerprint reader, and e-SATA and HDMI ports around back. The 15-inch offers pretty much same as its bigger, 17-inch bro only without the TV tuner and Blu-ray disc drive. Dell XPS M1730 with 8800M GTX SLI reviewed -- that sucker is fast
As is usually the case when you slap the latest and greatest silicon in a laptop, it's going to best whatever came before. What's surprising here is how thoroughly the Dell XPS M1730 with a Core 2 Extreme X9000 processor and dual GeForce 8800M GTX cards in SLI trounces the last generation of tech. The folks at ExtremeTech pitted the laptop against a hapless m9750 from Alienware, sporting the last generation of tech, and it handily bested it in every competition. CPU tests were heavily in the M1730's favor, and GPU tests even more so. The only holdup is that new X9000 processor, and according to Dell a release is "imminent" -- and if you're shelling out $4480 for a laptop, it might as well be what ExtremeTech calls "the fastest notebook yet."
Rock's Xtreme XL8 promises twin GeForce 8800M GTXs
Merely two days after Dell added NVIDIA's GeForce 8800M GTX to its beastly M1730, it seems that Rock is looking to up the graphical ante as well. Reportedly, the firm is gearing up to unleash the (likely rebadged) Xtreme XL8, which will house an Intel X6800 quad-core processor, a delightful pair of NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTXs, up to 1TB of storage space and a 17-inch 1,920 x 1,200 resolution panel to boot. Furthermore, you'll find an Ethernet jack, Draft-N wireless card, an obligatory (no, really) HD DVD drive and a presumably laughable battery life. Waiting for the sting? Try £2,500 ($4,976) to £3,000 ($5,971), with pre-orders going live later this month.
Dell adds dual NVIDIA 8800M GTX graphics to M1730: the be(a)st, now better
They may not be the first, but Dell's 17-inch XPM M1730 "Beast" deserves a warm welcome to the NVIDIA 8800M GTX club regardless. The dual-card update represents a 49% performance gain (3Dmark06) over Dell's previous top-end, dual 8700M GT card configuration. That puts the laptop on par with the DX10 performance of many new desktop rigs. Available now-ish in the US for $700 more than the dual 8700M GT option. However, orders placed today are estimated to arrive on February 20th with a cautionary footnote of possible delay. Ready for EMEA and AsiaPac regions sometime "soon." Now, if only Alienware would update us on their M17x availability we'd have our 17-inch, 8800M GTX gaming options sorted.
Alienware's Area-51 m15x and m17x with Nvidia 8800M GTX on Monday?
Ready for it? Rumor has it that Monday, Alienware will be busting out their Area-51 m15x and m17x laptops. We're fully expecting the 15- and 17-inch laptops to arrive loaded with 512MB of Nvidia's supreme, GeForce Go 8800M GTX mobile graphics. Alienware M15x / M17x laptops revealed with NVIDIA 8800M GTX
It's no secret that Alienware laptops have long loved to pack some serious NVIDIA-based heat, and judging by screenshots (another shown after the jump) of a reported slip up earlier today, those scouting a new extraterrestrial rig might want to hold out just a tick longer. It looks as if the firm will soon be unveiling (officially, that is) the 15-inch M15x and 17-inch M17x gaming laptops, both of which will seemingly be available with the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800M GTX graphics processor. As for the 8M-series GPU, it'll boast full DirectX 10 support, the Lumenex Engine, second-generation PureVideo HD technology, a 500MHz core clock, 1,250MHz shader clock and an 800MHz memory clock. Regarding the actual lappies, all we know is that the smaller of the two will be available with a 1,440 x 900 resolution display, 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB HDD, dual-layer DVD writer and Vista Home Premium. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground for something official, but don't worry, it ought not be long now.[Thanks, Andrew]
