‘ToeJam & Earl’ is more Diet Coke than fine wine

When I was young -- and I mean young, around six or seven -- my extended family would get together at my grandmother's house nearly every Sunday. And often on those days, for at least an hour or two, my cousin and I would play on her Sega Mega Drive (aka Genesis) together. Our go-to game was ToeJam & Earl, I think mostly because we needn't fight over one controller and it was co-operative, rather than competitive. Though my memories of the game are fond, the sequels released over the following decade completely passed me by. That's why I've had my eye on ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove -- an homage to the '90s classic that secured initial funding on Kickstarter in 2015. As it turns out, though, some memories are better being just that.

  • Crush waves of enemies to save princess in Day of the Viking

Day of the Viking is a new game from Adult Swim involving a castle, a princess and vikings. The vikings are coming for the princess's treasure and as the castle defender, you need to destroy them. The game offers numerous ways to go about doing this and there's 80 levels with varying locations and amounts of vikings. As they get stronger, unlock stronger weapons to take them down and complete harder missions in each level. The app is universal for iPhone and iPad and sells for US$2.99. It requires no earlier than iOS 7.0. If you're familiar with the Adult Swim suite of iOS games and even just the Adult Swim brand (or network) in general, you'd probably assume Day of the Viking has cartoonish and playful elements to it. You would be correct! The description makes it seem like Day of the Viking is action-packed and potentially violent, but in practice destroying the vikings is a bit similar to playing a game of Angry Birds in which the pigs are moving targets. The princess of the castle is there to guide you through the first few levels. This is where you learn the essentials of the game. Initially, your only weapon atop the castle is a bow and arrow. Tapping vikings as they head closer shoots directly at them. Then the princess informs you of the slingshot, which can take out more than one viking at a time - useful for when they arrive in groups, which is often. When you pull the slingshot, you're given a sense of the boulder's path to target accurately. Every time you kill a viking, you earn some points and every so often a coin appears in the field. Tap to retrieve it while simultaneously avoiding vikings, but it's important to nab these for a few reasons. For one, they often appear in missions. To gain all three stars in each round, you have to complete three missions. These vary, but they range from having you collect a certain amount of coins to not taking any damage to the castle from a viking to killing three of them with one rock. The other aspect is Day of the Viking's currency. The points and coins add and contribute to your amount of gold, which buys boosters to enhance your weapons or upgrades, among some other things. In-app purchases are available to buy packs of gold, too. The levels are harder than one might expect. By round three or four I had already failed to defend the castle and had to replay the level more than once. To get anywhere in the game, you must rely heavily on boosters and upgrades because your regular weapon set isn't even close to sufficient for defeating the vikings. This increases the likeliness that making an in-app purchase will come into question, which is a little disappointing for a paid game to start. Day of the Viking is lacking somewhat in originality and unabashedly calls on you a bit too much to spend that gold, but it does have plenty of entertainment value and great design. Get the universal Day of the Viking game in the App Store for $2.99.

  • Jazzpunk review: Doo-wop skidoo bop pow

Jazzpunk occupies a crossbreed universe of 1950s Americana and modern convenience. It's an alternate-history exploration of the Cold War era: The world is occupied and run by machines in a society that appears to be equal parts Russian, Japanese and American. The construction workers are robots. The sushi chefs are robots. The police force is made up of robots. Pretty much everyone is a robot – except for you. In this PC, Mac and Linux adventure, you are a crooked-fingered, human detective who accepts secret missions by popping psychedelic pills. You're a spy in the oddest interpretation of the most romanticized espionage era ever. Buried in Jazzpunk's dissonant settings and puerile puzzles lies a bucket of laughs at the expense of Russians, Americans, islanders, Japanese, Scots, robots and humans – everyone. Nothing is off-limits in Jazzpunk, and everything is funny.

As an adventure game rife with pop cultural spoofs and slapstick comedy, it makes a certain kind of sense that the latest Jazzpunk trailer would be an extended riff on the 1995 Keanu Reeves "classic" Johnny Mnemonic. In development at Necrophone Games, Jazzpunk is described as "a comedy adventure set in an alternate reality Cold War World, plagued with corporate espionage, CyberCrime, and sentient martinis." Its developers claim that the game is largely based on the spoof comedy films of yesteryear and features open-world exploration. There's no mention of the trailer's ill-fated pocket pigeon, but we're sure that will all be explained when the game makes its February 7 Steam debut. For more details visit the newly-launched Jazzpunk Steam site. It's worth a look for the "Key Features" list alone.

  • Castle Doombad is a tower defense game with an evil, vertical twist

    by

There are already too many tower defense games on the App Store. There are great ones, good ones, OK ones and bad ones, and there are plenty of each category. Castle Doombad -- the latest from the always solid Adult Swim Games -- proves it deserves to exist two reasons: First, rather than adopting the familiar top-down viewpoint that most tower defense games utilize, it's presented in a two-dimensional castle with multiple floors going up. And second, you play as the villain. Awesome. Each level of Castle Doombad revolves around a captured princess, and it's up to you to make sure she remains captive. She produces "screams" at regular intervals which act as in-game currency to buy traps and barriers. You place these obstacles wherever you think they'll best be able to hold off the heroes who are attempting to rescue the damsel. These mechanics are the same as many games in the genre, but they are presented in a fresh and fun way. The 2D nature of the levels presents unique challenges as well, such as heroes who use ladders to skip entire floors of your castle. Don't expect to load the first floor of your fortress with traps and relax; you'll need to build traps and spawn minions almost everywhere to ensure the princess remains under lock and key. There's a surprising amount of depth to the game, and you can try out various strategies to see which works the best for you. For example, sometimes it's best to pick off each hero as they enter your castle, while other times it pays off to place a barrier and build up a huge group of them before wiping out the crowd with a single trap. Regardless of your approach, it's quite satisfying to watch the tiny knights and other rescuers meet their demise at your hand. Adult Swim Games hits another home run with Castle Doombad, and whether you're new to the tower defense genre or a seasoned veteran, it's definitely worth the US$2.99 price of entry. You don't get many chances to play as the villain these days, and even rarer is it this much fun.

  • Move to the music or die trying in Soundodger+

In recently-released rhythm game Soundodger+ by Studio Bean, you play as a circle trapped in a circle, while the game's soundtrack - or your own, should you choose to import songs - creates particles you must dodge to survive. It's kind of like that scene in The Matrix, except instead of dodging bullets, imagine Neo dodging sweet beats. The game, as described on its website, features "hand-choreographed bullet patterns," as well as an original soundtrack featuring Danny Baranowsky (Super Meat Boy) and Disasterpiece (FEZ, Runner 2). If the game's 23 original songs aren't your thing, you can import your own music library and create your own levels using the included editor, or have the game auto-generate levels for you. The game released yesterday on Steam, and is currently on sale for $6 until October 18, at which point it will become $8.

  • Daily iPad App: Amateur Surgeon 3 is pretty bloody good

    08.09.2013

Would you believe that after releasing two totally obnoxious, over-the-top Amateur Surgeon games, Adult Swim's newly released Amateur Surgeon 3 is a tasteful, realistic look at the medical practice? No? Ok, good -- because it's really, really not -- but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Amateur Surgeon 3 lets you poke around inside the bodies of a whole cast of characters and creatures, each with their own medical ailment. Using the touchscreen, you'll need to cut out organs, yank broken bits of glass and other objects from within bodies and of course sew up wounds and clean up your work at the end. But this is an Adult Swim game, so there's absolutely nothing realistic about this experience whatsoever. You often cut up your patients with a pizza cutter, cauterize wounds by burning them with a Bic lighter and can use special "tag team" powers -- like bringing your dog into the operation so he can lick the patient's wound -- to help you complete your overall goal of saving the life of your patient (or was it victim?). Everything from your "medical" tools to the organs on which you are operating are rendered in an overly cartoony fashion, which is a good thing since the visuals would look pretty gruesome if they attempted to appear realistic. Still, the app carries warnings for profanity, nudity, violence and horror, so it's probably not a good recommendation for especially young app lovers. Unlike Amateur Surgeon 2, this third iteration is free to download (though that may change later). Of course, you'll still have plenty of opportunities to shell out cash towards the developers via the in-app purchase options which allow you to buy everything from in-game currency to "blood packs" which are required in order to retry failed missions. If you're not too squeamish and don't mind dropping a few bucks in the event that you fail a few times in a row, Amateur Surgeon 3 is a fine choice. Or, you know, you could just find a giant bear and attempt to operate on it using random kitchen utensils. Same thing.

Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe, a crazy mix of Tetris and Mega Man created by developer Andrew Morrish and published by Adult Swim, comes to Steam later today. The project started as a Flash game (playable for free) in which you shoot groups of blocks that fall from above. The "Deluxe" part is new, with the game having evolved to include eight different characters, six worlds, and local head-to-head multiplayer. Full controller support is also included, so you can play SPPD through Steam's Big Picture mode. Super Puzzle Platformer Deluxe is regularly priced at $7.99, though it'll be 25 percent off at launch. To celebrate, Adult Swim's also having a half-off sale on its first Steam release, Super House of Dead Ninjas, next Tuesday, May 28.

  • Daily iPhone App: Robot Unicorn Attack 2 turns Adult Swim's biggest hit freemium

    by

    04.29.2013

Adult Swim has built up a nice stable of games on the App Store, and the biggest workhorse in it is Robot Unicorn Attack, a Flash game that's an endless runner where you play as the titular creature dashing and jumping to '80s music playing in the background. That game's been very successful, but due to the music licensing, Adult Swim's never been able to turn it freemium, which is a business model that potentially offers a bigger audience (and more profits). Robot Unicorn Attack 2, however, is built freemium from the ground up. It's free to download, and the game earns you a currency which you can spend on powering up your unicorn, customizing it with various extra items, buying boosts to help your score and so on. The music has changed to something a little more easily licensed, though you can still buy a number of real licensed songs (Corey Hart!) via in-app purchase. And while there's not multiplayer per se, there are also daily and weekly challenges, designed to get you to beat your own high score, or fight for your faction in a larger competition. The game itself hasn't changed much, though the boosts and the upgrades do pack a pretty solid punch (you can add plenty of extra jumps to your unicorn's repertoire, and even fly once you've reached full speed). Developer PikPok (best known for their great Monsters Ate My Condo games) has done an excellent job here riffing on the original title, while still keeping Adult Swim's freemium requirements in place. Robot Unicorn Attack 2 is definitely worth a download -- the freemium elements aren't always successful, but this is a solid update on Adult Swim's most charming game.

Is it possible you haven't played Robot Unicorn Attack yet? It's by far Adult Swim's most popular onilne Flash game, and not only is it available to play for free (in a few different forms) in your browser, but it's about a robot unicorn collecting fairies and dashing through star crystals while the 2009 remix of Erasure's "Always" plays in the background. Seriously, you better have played this. The game's also spawned three different versions on iOS, including the original, a Heavy Metal version, and a special Christmas edition. But now the full numbered sequel has arrived on iPhones and iPads, and it's made by PikPok, the developers behind the excellent Monsters Ate My Condo games.I'll hit the sourest note first: "Always" isn't in this one. At least not right away.

Figuring out new ways to make believe that we're a pretty, pretty unicorn takes up about 80 percent of our day, so we always appreciate it when someone else does the majority of the grunt work for us. Imagine then our appreciative, wistful sigh upon learning of PixelJam's new game with Adult Swim, Retro Unicorn Attack: Challenge Edition. As retro and/or pixelated as its name and developer imply, Retro Unicorn Attack is an endless runner that tasks the player (a beautiful and majestic unicorn, obviously) with collecting fairies and dashing through vortexes, while avoiding obstacles and generally falling to a horrible death. The game is, besides being adorable and addictive, also quite difficult. Players can upload their best scores to a global leaderboard, hence the Challenge Edition subtitle.
