Take it from us, your London-based sleuths, when anything sells faster than Harry Potter books or DVDs in the UK, it's scorching hot. Case in point is Microsoft's Vista successor, which has sold so well that it has beaten the Amazon UK pre-order record previously held by J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. In fact, Windows 7 was able to tally up more sales in the first 8 hours of pre-order availability than Vista was able to collect altogether. Now that's what we call an upgrade.

In what has become the "hip cool thing to do" for consoles these days, the 250GB version of the PS3 Slim is up for pre-order in the UK before it's been even confirmed by Sony for most of the world. Sadly, it's just the boring old black version -- so far the white PS3 Slim has only been seen making nice with Final Fantasy XIII in Japan -- but at £285 (about $455 US) it is more than double the capacity for only 40 more "quid" than the original PS3 Slim. Pre-orders are available now, and Amazon says the console will ship on October 1. So the question is, do you jump in now, or do you wait for one of the myriad 250GB bundles headed for Europe? It's the moral dilemma of our times. [Via I4U]

  • Sony's VAIO P priced at 300 on Amazon's UK site

Now we're talking. We don't exactly what's going on in the UK, but this VAIO P for £300 (about $442) makes us seriously want to jet on over. The last time we saw one of these babies priced, we were looking at a steep £1,368.99 (or around $2,017) -- though that was for the kitted out 128GB SSD version with 3G broadband on-board. Still, we'll happily take this 60GB HDD / 2GB RAM iteration at this price, since it actually hits that sweet spot we were hoping to find the first time around. The only question is whether or not this isn't just some kind of nasty glitch in the Matrix -- it does seem unlikely we'll see price fluctuations this wide. Any word Sony? We'll be reaching for our credit cards and international waybills while we wait.Update: If it seems to good to be true, it probably is, right? Right. The price is now back to the astronomical figure of £740 ($1,090). Drat.[Thanks, Varuna]

  • Amazon OLPC orders in danger of cancellation -- think of the children!

When Amazon got in on the Give 1, Get 1 OLPC plan, where generous lovers of little green machines could chip in $399 to donate one XO to the cause while also getting a new toy for their children (or themselves), it was unclear exactly when the things would be delivered. The answer, according to Amazon at least, is "not soon enough." The company's UK wing is indicating that orders are in danger of being canceled if OLPC doesn't get off its charitable fanny and start mailing 'em. Amazon has a strict policy of shipment within 30 days and has sent out a flurry of warning missives as that period draws to a close. We're inclined to think that this is just an automatic system on Amazon's side and that the company will give an extension prior to dropping the hammer. After all, when it comes to the whole "delivery of product" thing, it hasn't exactly done so well in meeting consumer demand itself.Update: ChristophD from One Laptop Per Child News commented to let us know that OLPC is shipping some little lappys now, missing Amazon UK's cut-off by one whole day. Nothing like waiting until the last minute!

  • iPhone briefly shows up on Amazon UK with price, date

It didn't provide even an inkling of how the ongoing will-they-or-won't-they carrier drama plaguing the iPhone's European adventures will resolve itself, but that certainly doesn't mean it ain't interesting: Amazon's British outpost briefly listed pricing, launch date, and pre-order details for the 8GB iPhone earlier today, pegging the unit at £329 (about $663) on December 1 (it has since been pulled and replaced with a far less informative version). It seems reasonable enough if the price includes tax, though the pre-holiday date might be a bummer for the more impatient among the UK's iPhone hopefuls. Then again, we're thinking the odds are good that both the MSRP and drop date are merely Amazon estimates here and not anything official -- especially since there's no mention of a carrier. Needless to say, iPhone Watch continues east of the pond.[Via MacNN]

  • Amazon UK mistakingly attributes Zune to Apple

It's always nice to see a retail giant like Amazon ensure they have their Zune facts straight. There's a refreshing feeling when you know that the right thing has been done, and the right company is being appreciated for all their hard, innovative work. However, since I *am* trying to find a decent portable media player, I think I just might have to 'request this item from another seller.' Isn't Amazon handy?[via digg]
