One of my favorite local points of interest apps, Around Me (free), received a rather substantial update that will bring a smile to holiday travelers and anyone looking for close-by gas stations, eateries, shopping venues and much more. The ad-supported universal app has added hotel booking in the iPad version, while both versions include improved hotel info including the availability of free WiFi and details on parking and facilities. Other new features include gas prices (USA only) and increased info on movies and movie times, the latter information coming from Fandango. The app is not a replacement for a full blown navigation system, but it will allow you to send the destination to whatever nav app you have on your device, including Apple Maps. While checking the app I found no support yet for the new Google Maps, but would expect it at any time. Around Me now supports the iPhone 5 screen and iOS 6. It's one of my favorite apps, especially when I am on the road and looking for everything from a pharmacy to a cinema or an ATM. I don't find the ads annoying, but there is an in-app upgrade to make the app ad-free for US $2.99. That strikes me as a little high; $0.99 would seem more reasonable and bring in more upgraders. I recommend Around Me highly, and I think you'll appreciate its virtues too. %Gallery-173470%

I can't believe it. August is here which means the summer is just about over and the back to school season is almost upon us. So go buy your books, sharpen your pencils and grab these five iOS apps to help you start off the school year on the right foot: Grades 2 (Free) Grades 2 is an app that will help you reach your target GPA. It'll let you input your classes, their assignments and your scores as the semester progresses. If you input a target grade, the app will tell you what you need to score on your assignments to reach your goal. iHomework ($1.99) iHomework is the ultimate organizer for students. It lets you keep track of courses, teacher information, assignments, grades and more. It has a built-in calendar and reminder system. It also works on your iPhone or iPad and has a Mac app so you can sync your information across all three devices. Snoozerr ($0.99) Snoozerr is an audio recording app that you can use to record lectures. It also integrates with the iPhone camera and lets you snap a photo during a lecture. The app will timestamp the photo so you can sync the visual content with the audio and get all parts of the lecture. AroundMe (Free) AroundMe is a GPS app that shows you points of interests like gas stations and banks around you. It's perfect for the first-year college student who's venturing out for the first time to a new location. Guinness Pub Finder (Free) Last but not least is the Guinness Pub finder app. One of the joys of upper-class college living is the ability to go out and have a good meal with a cold beer at a local pub. The pub finder app lets you find a local tavern that sells the hearty stout. It also lets you rate the establishment and receive tips on drinking a proper mug of Guinness. A 99-cent in-app purchase will add a trivia-based game or a gallery of Guinness images.

AroundMe [App Store link] has always been a must have app for my iPhone. Now it has been updated to make it even better. Since it's free, having it on your phone is a no-brainer.In this latest edition you can chose a category of places, e.g., restaurants, hospitals, supermarkets and so on. You then get the usual list of destinations closest to you, along with a web site if one exists, and a phone number. If you click on the map button, you'll get a split screen with a map showing the closest 4 destinations, along with your current location. In the lower half of the screen, you get the usual list of the closest locations. This new feature is really helpful in visualizing where your destinations are, as the closest might not always be the most desirable. The 'nearby' function allows you to link to Wikipedia entries for things around you like museums or historical sites.AroundMe runs on the iPhone and iPod touch, and requires iPhone software version 2.2 or greater. It supports English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. There are other apps that have similar functions, but I keep coming back to AroundMe because it is fast, is usually very up to date via Google info, and is easy to use. %Gallery-46695%
