It appears as though those among us who use proper punctuation when texting look like big jerks. A new study out of Binghamton University says that text messages appended with a period come off as kind of rude. Computer Mediated Communication (email, texting, instant messages, etc..) lacks any sort of the context clues of face to face communications methods, so to see what the period meant in terms of CMC, the researchers had a small group of undergrads rate conversations that were framed either as handwritten notes or text messages.

We're genuinely, genuinely thrilled for the good people of Binghamton, New York. Despite the fact that Time Warner Cable offers up over 60 high-def stations in the area, folks have been living with an SD version of their CBS affiliate (WBNG-TV) for over two years now. That means SD NFL, SD primetime dramas, etc. At long last, users can pull down their elephant-sized antennas and tune to slot 701, as TWC and Granite Broadcasting Corporation have finally agreed to transmission terms this month. The HD feed of WBNG-TV is set to go live on December 23rd, which in our book, is not a moment too soon. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family]

Although Binghamton, New York is far from being as blessed as Manhattan in the HD department right now (at least on Time Warner Cable), the carrier is doing everything it can to bring equality to the high-def landscape in the Empire State. Shortly after Disney HD, ABC Family HD and Toon Disney HD surfaced on the EPG, two more channels -- Planet Green HD (830) and Travel Channel HD (837) -- have emerged. As expected, these two are also being delivered via switched digital video (SDV), so you CableCARD users will just have to hang tight for now. Talk about patience paying off -- in just the last week, the previously HD-deprived region of Binghamton, New York has received ten new high-def channels from Time Warner Cable. Granted, residents are certainly not satisfied yet (hey, can't blame you there), but as of now, subscribers can tune into Versus / Golf HD (807), TBS HD (822), CNN HD (824) and Food Network HD (827). If we had to guess, we'd bet these are being beamed out via SDV, but we wouldn't mind hearing a little confirmation either way from Binghamton-based CableCARD users. It's been far, far too long since Binghamton, New York got any HD love from Time Warner, but just days after Rochester received an update in the upstate, a different half dozen have made the trek south. Just this week, TWC launched Universal HD, A&E HD, Discovery HD, TLC HD, Animal Planet HD and Science Channel HD, and we're hearing that all six are being delivered via SDV. Tough news for CableCARD users to swallow, but hopefully a remedy will be around sooner rather than later. [Disclosure: Engadget is part of the Time Warner family][Thanks, Armando]
