Be honest: if you've watched Bob Ross' The Joy of Painting, it was probably more for his ultra-relaxing voice than his artistic advice. More than a few people have admitted to nodding off to his episodes. If so, you'll be glad to hear that his dulcet tones are available on-demand through your phone. Calm has released an officially approved Bob Ross Sleep Story recording for its mobile app (simply titled Painting With Bob Ross) that, as you might guess, uses snippets from the artist's PBS show to help your slumber. You no longer have to leave a YouTube video open or find a way to grab the raw audio.

Modern copyright law can't keep pace with thinking machines

This past April, engineer Alex Reben developed and posted to YouTube, "Deeply Artificial Trees", an art piece powered by machine learning, that leveraged old Joy of Painting videos. It generate gibberish audio in the speaking style and tone of Bob Ross, the show's host. Bob Ross' estate was not amused, subsequently issuing a DMCA takedown request and having the video knocked offline until very recently. Much like Naruto, the famous selfie-snapping black crested macaque, the Trees debacle raises a number of questions of how the Copyright Act of 1976 and DMCA's Fair Use doctrine should be applied to a rapidly evolving technological culture, especially as AI and machine learning techniques approach ubiquity.

Bob Ross is about to do battle with the gods. The Joy of Painting host, known for his soft voice, permed afro and "happy little trees," is coming to Hi-Rez Studios' mythology-themed MOBA Smite later this month as a character skin for Sylvanus.

Computers don't dream of electric sheep, they imagine the dulcet tones of legendary public access painter, Bob Ross. Bay Area artist and engineer Alexander Reben has produced an incredible feat of machine learning in honor of the late Ross, creating a mashup video that applies Deep Dream-like algorithms to both the video and audio tracks. The result is an utterly surreal experience that will leave you pinching yourself.

When Bob Ross began painting happy trees and sunlit fields on public television in 1983, there was no such thing as Twitch, no online streaming and certainly no KappaRoss. But now, there's Bob Ross Mondays on Twitch. The streaming site will air The Joy of Painting, Ross' beloved show, every Monday from 3PM PST to 9:30PM PST, starting tonight. Isn't life in the future grand?

To celebrate the Bob Ross' birthday, streaming video outfit Twitch has secured the rights to broadcast all 403 episodes of the well-coiffed artist's The Joy of Painting series. The magic runs for a week, starting today, over at Ross' Twitch channel, and is part of a bigger announcement: Twitch Creative is partnering with Adobe as a launch sponsor, and the category's getting its own homepage that'll highlight, well, folks painting and doing other creative stuff on the service. What's more, the fledgling Music category's getting brought over under the Creative umbrella, so there's a good chance you could log on and see Deadmau5 making his next electronic track on the homepage soon.

Looks like one of the most interesting potential titles for the DS and Wii may be no more. AGFRAG, the studio developing the Bob Ross game, is no longer dealing with the property. The reason? Ever popular and amorphous "legal reasons," though Joseph Hatcher, head of AGFRAG, indicated that the game may not be canceled. His studio is just no longer in any way involved with development of the title. Our fluffy white cloud has a slim silver lining, at least -- but for now, who knows if and when we'll see a real joy of painting on Nintendo systems.

With all the excitement surrounding the announcement of an official Bob Ross Joy of Painting videogame for the Revolution, I completely overlooked the fact that the game is also slated to hit that handheld system with the canvas touch screen and the paintbrush stylus! Call it a "happy accident", if you will. No, seriously. Bob Ross will presumably be teaching you how to paint devastatingly gorgeous masterpieces on your DS. Developed by the AGFRAG Entertainment Group, the game has every chance of doing for art what Elektroplankton did for music. It'll be weird, that's for sure, but who could possibly resist the charms of an inescapably cheery man with a head of hair that even dwarfs the mountains he so optimistically paints? Now all we need is that Kirby / Bob Ross crossover platformer and we're set to unleash our inner artistes.[Thanks Joey M!]

Bob Ross Inc. announced on Friday that the painting-made-simple guru would soon be immortalized in his very own video game. Sounds like perfect April Fool's fodder, right? Wrong. The game has been licensed to developer AGFRAG who is currently searching for a publisher.AGFRAG's Joseph Hatcher promised, "The Bob Ross game will utilize the unique inputs that the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Revolution have that can truly immerse the players while they learn to paint like Bob Ross."
