You’d have to be a real foodie to drop a few thousand dollars on a dedicated food printer, but what if you could transform a regular 3D printer into one for a fraction of that? That’s the premise behind Cakewalk3D, a new Kickstarter project that promises to let you print designs on cakes, appetizers and more on the cheap.

  • Kicking off March with Warcraft-themed cakes

World of WarCrafts spotlights art and creativity by WoW players, including fan art, cooking, comics, cosplay, music, fan fiction and more. Sample the whole spectrum on our Arts and Crafts in WoW page. I have a love/hate relationship with Warcraft cake submissions. On the one hand, I love seeing the creativity put forth and the stylish efforts of confectionary art. On the other, they make me want to bake things, and while I enjoy baking things, I don't eat sweets often enough to warrant making a full-sized cake! Oh sure, I could ask my Dad to devour it, but even he has his limits as far as cake consumption goes. ... not to mention that cake submissions make me kind of hungry, especially when they look as tasty as the cake pictured above. Sara Bryant posted this cake on Reddit a while back and then decided to submit it to us as well. But that's not all we've got for you today. We've also got a couple of sets of perfectly adorable cake toppers, including one from a name you've heard on the site before. Check out the gallery, and meet us after the break for more goodies! %Gallery-31459%

  • Cakes of nanotubes may measure terahertz laser power, not years wasted

Terahertz lasers sure are awesome but, there's one big problem, we have no reliable way of measuring their power -- a pretty important piece of data to have before you start bombarding people with their flesh penetrating rays. A new coating for laser calibration tools called VANTA seems like a viable candidate for sucking up those longer than visible wavelengths. Constructed of vertically aligned carbon nanotubes, up to 1.5mm in length, cakes of VANTA are not only more absorbent than other materials used for measuring a laser's power (which makes it more accurate and faster), it's also quite easy to handle. Chunks of the stuff can be sliced off with a razor and shuttled to the detector on the blade's side. We give it a week before someone cuts a piece with one of those new MacBook Airs.

  • Farewell and thank you, WoW.com

I've told this story a few times before: I actually started out on WoW.com as a comment troll. A few years back, Jennie Lees was the lead blogger here, and she posted something silly about a wallpaper or a plush doll, I don't remember. I was also reading the forums at the time, and Blizzard had just dropped new priest patch notes. "Why are you posting this junk," I commented angrily, "when the priest notes just dropped?" She was nice about it -- she actually emailed me and said that the priest updates post was coming soon. And I felt so bad about it, I never activated the comment. But a little while after that, when WoW Insider posted that they were looking for some new writers, I applied, and said that I was sorry for that comment, but that I was working on becoming a writer and could help out with posting on the site when needed. When I started writing for WoW Insider (now WoW.com, obviously), I was working retail in Chicago, writing part-time in the evenings. The site itself got only a few thousand hits a month, with one or two weekly features and maybe ten comments per post. Now, over three years later, I'm a fulltime freelance writer, I've been to three BlizzCons, I've written over 1.7 million words in over 3,300 posts here about everything in Azeroth, and the site itself rivals some of the best blogs on the Internet, routinely garnering millions of hits a month. I helped build this site with my own two hands, and while I definitely can't claim all the credit (there was and is a huge team of people who keep this thing running), it's with a fair amount of sorrow that I'm here to tell you today will be my last day on WoW.com.

Thanksgiving seems like an excellent time to update our gallery of WoW-related confectionary masterpieces, also known as WoW cakes. This dragon and Alliance-themed cake above was made for Valaar of Kargath by his girlfriend Erelia for his 30th birthday. She also made the Cake of the Lich King that we posted a while back. Talented lady! And elsewhere in the updated gallery, you'll find this Moonkin cake, made for Mark by his mother, sister, and girlfriend. Yes, those do appear to be real feathers on the cake. Probably not the most appetizing topping, but maybe they were just making it to show off. It does add a very Moonkin feel, that's for sure. If you have pictures of an awesome WoW-related cake, feel free to send them along on our tipline, and you may see them right here in the future! %Gallery-31459%

Yes, that's Arthas admiring his own title on a license plate -- Kallis of Silver Hand sent us this shot, presumably before his head was chopped off by Frostmourne. Trust us, if you think celebrities are angry when the paparazzi come by, you don't want to see what the Lich King does. This picture and quite a few others are all new in our WoW-related license plate gallery, and we've gotten a few other new pictures of cakes and tattoos to share with you as well. Browse through all of the pictures from readers in the galleries below, and if you've gotten a new WoW-related license plate, someone's baked you a WoW-related cake, or you've picked up some new WoW-themed ink, feel free to send us a picture so we can share it here on the site.%Gallery-20183%%Gallery-31459%%Gallery-40471%

  • More tasty WoW cakes

We got quite a few new cakes come across the tipline since we posted that caketop the other day, including this scary little bit of confectionary groomicide, thanks to another WoW-playing laptop. Lumpey of Arathor sent this one in, and says his mom made it for his wife's bridal shower, after he joked about bringing his laptop on the honeymoon so he could play WoW. We just want to know: mother or mother-in-law? The two messages might be very different, depending. But it does look like a great cake! We've added this one to the gallery, along with two others we were sent. One is from Bubber, who put an edible guild picture on a regular cake he picked up (but it still looks pretty good), and the other is from Patrick S., whose wife made him another cake laptop for his birthday last year. That one actually has edible ricepaper TCG cards on it, and a great little World of Warcraft logo on the bottom. Very awesome, everybody, thanks for sending those in.%Gallery-31459%

We've seen some awesome Warcraft-related cakes before, but this one is probably the most literal we've come across -- it's an actual representation of a laptop, complete with what looks like a to-scale keyboard, and little letters etched on the keys. Sure, it's a little more pillowy and frosted than your average MacBook, but that edible paper screenshot does look really cool. And before someone in the comments asks: what addon is that around the ability buttons? You can see all of the other cakes we've collected so far in the gallery below. And as always, if you spot (or even make) a WoW-related confectionary contraption, drop us a note so we can check it out.[via Wonderland] %Gallery-31459%

  • Kart this cake to your wedding

It may seem strange, suggesting to your fiancee that the iconic wedding cake should have a Mario Kart theme -- but then again, everyone loves Mario Kart, so chances of success are pretty good. This happy couple featured a stunning cake, which isn't just a replica of a particular object or character. This is the spirit of the entire Mario Kart world, baked and iced to picturesque perfection. Atop the many layers of goodness, each representing different courses and characters, is a kissing Mario and Peach figurine. So very sweet ... and tasty. Hit the jump for a few close-ups of this artistic achievement.%Gallery-4772%

Reader Angela loves herself some Brawl. And, so do her friends. The gang got together to celebrate the game's release by making themselves a Smash Bros.-themed cake. If there's anything we'd like to replace Falcon's punch with, it's definitely cake. We like cake.Angela, dear, nice job on including the DS in the picture. We have to ask, though. Why do you eat saltines with your cake? We usually go with the tried-and-true glass of milk.

Do you love game cakes? So does Gamecakes.com! In answer to the ever-growing number of game-related cakes that have flooded the game world copycat-murder style, Kotaku's Michael Fahey and Joystiq's yours truly have banded together to start an entire site dedicated to game cakes. Okay, Fahey is the brains and the brawn; I'm just a lonely cake-enthusiast turned contributer. Anyways, the point is, never before has there been a site so full of deliciousness. Plus, if you've made a game cake and have pictures, we want to publish them; everyone deserves their fifteen minutes of cakey fame. In addition to showing off pics, Gamecakes.com is also a place to share cake recipes, cake-eating testimonials, heck, even cake post mortems. Gamecakes.com is here for all your cake-related needs, or just your digital sugar fix...

  • Three-tiered Mario mushroom cake amazes

This incredible three-tiered Mario-themed wedding cake was the big surprise at Brent Gustafson's wedding. His bride-to-be planned the cake, keeping it a secret until just before its unveiling. The entire creation -- short of the cake toppers -- was entirely edible. That means piranha plants, mushroom, everything. While the cake toppers weren't edible, they weren't easy to come by. They're part of the "Mario Family" series from Club Nintendo in Japan, only available by redeeming points from Japanese Nintendo products. If they knew about our Gears of War contest, we're pretty sure the cake's Flickr entry would take the, uh ... you know. • Have your cake and eat it too -- Cake Mania for the DS

Originally an online treasure, Cake Mania tells the tale of Jill, a recent graduate from culinary school, who returns home to find her grandparents bakery closed thanks to the new neighborhood Wal-Mart Mega-Mart. Jill, in order to save the family business, must bake up a storm of cakes and manage the store to keep customers coming. The DS version will feature the same cake baking madness along with an expansion titled Back to the Bakery. Cake Mania is scheduled to release in 2007 and sounds like it could start a new craze of bringing popular online games to the DS.
