  • Capcom on DMC4 installation: What's the big deal?

The game hasn't even been released yet and already there's a lot of online controversy over Devil May Cry 4's installation procedure. The game takes around 20 minutes to install about 5 gigabytes of data to your hard drive, during which there's a five-minute looping recap slideshow. Capcom's Chris Kramer responded to CVG with a statement regarding the issue: "If you don't want to watch the 'Previously, on Devil May Cry...' portion of the install process, go make a sandwich and grab a soda, then come on back." Kramer continues, "Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren't making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click 'Yes!' on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes." Wah, indeed! We agree completely with Kramer on this -- a twenty minute long installation sequence is not a big deal. It cuts down on load times, making it load faster than the 360 version despite the slower drive speed. Without the install, players would be complaining about lengthy load times. Which is better? That's a hypothetical question because we already know and, clearly, so does Capcom.

Borrowing a bit of that white-haired bravado, Capcom has unapologetically responded to the so-called crybabies for whom Devil May Cry 4's 21 min, 40 sec PlayStation 3 pre-game installation (timed by CVG) stretches out like an eternity of wasted opportunity and nonfulfillment. "Wah! Have you ever played a PC game? At least we aren't making you shuffle multiple discs into a ROM drive, or continuously click 'Yes!' on a series of endless Windows dialog boxes," Capcom's Chris Kramer fires back at any griefer who will listen.Once the DMC4 installation is complete (a one-time process – unless you delete the 5GB of data), Capcom claims players will experience "near-Super Nintendo speed load times," which CVG clarifies as "one or two seconds shy of those in the [Xbox] 360 [version of the game]." Whether you feel this perk justifies the initial wait-to-play (which is alleviated by a screenshot recap of the series) or not, Capcom doesn't much care. Pre-game installation is a reality for a growing number of PS3 games. It's not a bullet-point any publisher wants to list on a press release or print on a retail box, but it's a 'next-gen feature' we all need to get used to.

  • Devil May Cry, a retrospective and review

This week marks the North American release of Devil May Cry 4 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. To celebrate, the crew at PS3 Fanboy have written a retrospective on the series as a whole. It's a good refresher for those who haven't touched the series in a long time (or ever). It also makes for a great read while PS3 owners wade through the required installation. (About 30 minutes in length, according to PS Fanboy editor Andrew Yoon.)Concluding the retrospective is a review of Devil May Cry 4. • DMC4 accomplishments are intriguing

We've been happily playing Devil May Cry 4 for a wee while now (check out our review and awesome series retrospective) and whilst doing so we noticed something a little strange about the game's accomplishment system. It's not the first multiplatform game to include the Xbox 360 achievements inside the PS3 version, by any means, though it is the first to allow players to check out their online accomplishment rankings as well as check out exactly which individual accomplishment goals their friends have achieved. The interesting thing is that the "Accomplishment Unlocked" screen is a part of the PS3 Operating System, similar to the network connection screen, rather than an in game messsage. What does this mean? Well it could mean that DMC4 is the first game to include specific data which Home will later be able to turn into trophies (when it's finally released). It could potentially indicate other exciting things, but we'll leave the rampant speculation to those who do it best: you, the commenters.

  • Free $10 gift card with DMC4 or Turok purchase

Last week, we mentioned that if you pre-ordered either Turok or Devil May Cry 4 at Circuit City you could score a $10 gift card. Well, it looks like they've extended the offer to anyone who purchases either game this week, pre-order or not. From Tuesday through Sunday, Circuit City is offering a $10 gift card to Turok, DMC4 or DMC4 CE purchasers and (for those who like their guides) is also taking $10 off the DMC4 strategy guide's price tag. No too bad of a deal, especially if you've recently put yourself in the DMC4 or Turok market after playing the game demos.

The discerning Devil May Cry fan can pick up on the minute subtleties hidden within the surprisingly complex and deep battle system the series is known for. It's that kind of discerning ability that's needed to see the improvements of Devil May Cry 4. As the franchise's first outing in the current generation of games, it's fascinating to see how much the series has improved, and how much it has stayed the same. Many of the changes featured in Devil May Cry 4 make it much more accessible than previous iterations in the series. Newcomers will appreciate the toned down difficulty and streamlined level design. But, the return of mainstay flaws, like unnecessary (and confusing) backtracking, and poor platforming will frustrate players -- both hardcore vets and newcomers alike. However, in spite of its few flaws, DMC4 is undeniably a fun game, and quite possibly the best in the series. Some previewers unjustly passed Nero off as a simple Dante clone. Yes, it's not hard to see why gamers would confuse the two. Not only do they look similar, but their movements are seemingly identical. However, playing as Nero offers a brand new system for fans to master and enjoy. The addition of the Devil Bringer completely changes the way players will perform combos. No, it's not a subtle change -- rather, clever use of the arm introduces a whole new mechanic to the franchise, making this the freshest addition to the series so far.%Gallery-3194%

Golly gee willickers there's a lot of games out this week. First of all, we should mention that Turok is officially out this week (though it was released early in some areas; we saw it at Blockbuster yesterday). The star of the show this week is probably Devil May Cry 4 though, what with its demon slaying antics and longstanding pedigree. But wait, what's this? There's more? Yes, it seems the post-holiday dearth has finally ended (for the moment anyway), as this week sees three more titles as well. All told we have: Devil May Cry 4 Turok Culdcept Saga The Spiderwick Chronicles Karaoke Revolution: American Idol Encore See, there's something for everybody (even gamers dying for a CCG / Monopoly hybrid). Not bad. Not bad at all.[Via Joystiq]

  • Europeans being price gouged by retailers for PS3 DMC4

Europeans are in for a nasty surprise when they go to order Devil May Cry 4 from many popular retailers. For some reason, the PS3 version of the game costs a significant amount more than the Xbox 360 version -- up to £10 in some instances. However, this isn't a Capcom-mandated price difference. Rather, it appears retailers are taking it into their own hands.Speaking to VideoGamer.com, a spokesperson for Capcom said: "We don't set the prices of our games, that's at the discretion of the retailer. In this specific instance, the process has resulted in a price difference, but the process itself is not something we completely control."Hopefully, gamer outrage will remind retailers that no one likes to be treated unfairly. Stay tuned for our full review of Devil May Cry 4 next week.[Via Next-Gen]

  • Halo 3 for $38 and free gift card w/DMC4 pre-order

If you're currently in the market for a fresh copy of Halo 3 then you're in luck, because this week Best Buy is offering Master Chief for the cheap. Through Sunday, they're selling standard edition copies of Halo 3 for the gotta have it price of $38. We are also hearing that some Best Buy stores are super clearancing out leftover Legendary Edition copies for as low as $79, but your mileage will vary on that. This week we also spotted a solid pre-order deal over at Circuit City where you can score a free $10 gift card when you pre-order either Devil May Cry 4 or Turok. Finally, on the hardware side of things, Circuit City has taken $10 off their entire lineup of 360 wireless controllers (including pink and black) and our friends at Best Buy Canada are offering an Xbox 360 Pro bundle (which comes bundled with GRAW2 and RSV) for $399. That's about it for crazy exciting deals this week. Remember to spend wisely and make sure there's food in the pantry before spending this week's entire paycheck on video game goods.[Thanks, Trekster_Gamer]

If you have an Xbox 360, you're pretty much obligated to download the Devil May Cry 4 demo. There are two reasons for this: 1) you're really excited for Devil May Cry 4, whether it's because you love the series or are a fan of action, or 2) you know this is the first Devil May Cry game for an Xbox console and you're trying to figure out what group number 1 thinks is so great about it. Truth be told, we actually fall somewhere in the middle, as we have played bits and pieces of previous Devil May Cry titles but have never actually completed one. Given our limited experience with the series, we can safely say that the demo provides more of what fans have come to enjoy, and uninitiated action fans should definitely take note. Read on for our impressions of the demo.%Gallery-3579%

  • Patience is for wimps - DMC4 demo available now on Japanese Store

We know only too well just how impatient you guys can be, which is why we're letting you know that you don't have to wait any longer. The Devil May Cry 4 demo is available right now on the Japanese PSN Store and, yes, it's in English. The American PSN Store will be updated later today with the demo, but Europeans will have to wait until next week to get their hands on that. That is, of course, unless you go ahead and load up your Japanese or American PSN accounts and get it today.Expect plenty more coverage of the game to come in the next couple of weeks, along with plenty of emails to SCEE asking why Europe has to wait for a demo again. In the meantime, chill out with Nero and while away the hours wielding a ridiculously large sword against impossible creatures.

Well, kiddies, the day has finally come. The Devil May Cry 4 demo has arrived on Xbox Live Marketplace. 612 megabytes of "Stylish Action," the demo promises both "advanced gameplay" and "cutting edge graphics." We're itching to try the demo out for ourselves, and if it doesn't deliver on both fronts, then we're calling shenanigans. As we mentioned Tuesday, the demo will allow players to take Nero for a test drive -- complete with sword revving action -- and even includes a good old-fashioned boss battle. Expect our impressions of the demo later today.

Ready to bust out the cosplay? These two fellows are. This seemingly official video showcases real life renditions of Dante and Nero fighting each other in a poorly lit environment with over-the-top (and rather ineffective) moves. The low budget gives it a certain flair, we admit. We'd call it "good" -- the kind of "good" we reserve for things like PS1 Resident Evil's cutscenes and the Street Fighter movie.

Capcom announced on their official blog today that the Devil May Cry 4 demo will arrive this Thursday on Xbox Live Marketplace, a full week ahead of the rumored January 31 date. The demo will allow gamers the chance to try out Nero and take part in a trademark boss battle. And ... um ... that's about it. Hmmm ... probably should have put some filler between those first two sentences. Oh wait, there are more details! The demo takes place in the Fortuna city level, featuring snowy mountains and a port area. Also, we have it on good authority that the demo can also be enjoyed in high definition. We can't wait.[Thanks, Blake P.]%Gallery-3579%

If you're not too busy playing Satan's Sudoku, you may want to lend some of your time to Beelzebub's bawling buddy, Devil May Cry 4. Though rumor had it arriving a tad later, the folks at Capcom have confirmed that a demo of the extravagant actioner is due to arrive on Xbox Live Marketplace and PlayStation Network this Thursday, January 24th. Demo May Cry will acquaint players with newcomer Nero, the franchise's third silver-haired, sword-wielding weirdo with a penchant for killing demons in spectacular fashion (that coat is snazzy!). Players will battle through several different locales and a boss encounter before being reminded of the full game's release on February 5th.%Gallery-2904%

We've already reported today that a Devil May Cry 4 demo is coming to the Japanese PSN Store on Thursday, but its quest for world domination doesn't end there. The demo will be sweeping across the Pacific to the American PSN Store on the same day, where its path of destruction (and potential joy) will end. We're not sure whether it will then continue its journey across the Atlantic to Europe, or whether it will sit around for a week or two before doing so. Either way, you can probably get your grubby paws on it wherever you happen to reside. As we said before, this demo is similar to the hands on that was available to press and attendees to the Tokyo Game Show last year. The difference is that this is a slice of devilish joy cut straight from the gold version of the game, rather than the rough cut shown at TGS. It's marvellous fun and Devil May Cry 4 is probably the first must-have game of 2008. We'll have a review of the full game for you before too long.[Via Joystiq]

  • Play Devil May Cry 4 this Thursday ... in Japanese!

We at PS3 Fanboy hear that Japan is changing its name to Demoland to more accurately reflect just how many demos it's receiving on the PS3. On top of today's new PixelJunk Monsters, the Japanese Store will receive a Devil May Cry 4 demo. It will be nearly identical to the TGS demo, with a few changes. The quality reflected will be the same as the gold version of the game, rather than the rougher cut that was shown at TGS. An English language demo is supposed to arrive in the coming weeks. However, until Capcom provides a solid date, we'll be playing through the Japanese version of the game.Wait, doesn't that make two Japanese PSN updates in a week? Sony America and Europe seem to have great difficulty doing that. Just shows how technologically advanced the Japanese are, we suppose.

The above image used to be part of a widget available for download at deceiverdeceived.com and betrayerbetrayed.com, two official Capcom websites for Devil May Cry 4. In the picture for the widget, the date January 31 was given for the release of a demo for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (via IGN). Downloading the widget, however, revealed no such line, and it has since been stricken from the widget image. No word from Capcom about the line. Devil May Cry 4 is due out January 31 in Japan, and the following week in North America and Europe.[Via X3F]

  • Rumor: DMC4 demo releasing January 31st

    01.17.2008

Okay, so we've known that a Devil May Cry 4 demo is coming soon to Xbox Live Marketplace, but we have yet to hear exactly how soon the soon really is. We're starting to think Capcom has commitment issues. But we may be one step closer to learning the exact date the demo will release on, if the official DMC4 mini-sites can be trusted.Over on both deceiverdeceived.com and betrayerbetrayed.com (two official DMC4 websites) IGN spotted a placeholder graphic for a DMC4 downloadable widget that lists a specific release date for the demo. The placeholder graphic states that the DMC4 online demo will be released to the XBLM on January 31st. Plain as English, simple as black and white. The only question mark here is the fact that this is simply a placeholder graphic for the widget and when the widget is downloaded, it makes no mention of the demo's release date. So, either we have confirmation of a January 31st release or a graphic artist just made up some news and random dates for a website graphic. Puzzling stuff.[Via IGN]
