  • Dead Space 3 rockets to top spot in this week's UK charts

Dead Space 3 boldly went where the previous Dead Space had gone before: No. 1 in the UK all-formats charts. We know, shock horror (ho ho ho), but more interesting is that the third main entry in the series scored 26.6 percent less UK launch sales than its predecessor. 65 percent of those sales were for the Xbox 360 version, 31 percent for PS3, and 4 percent for PC (although that discounts digital purchases).Last week's leader, Ni no Kuni, dropped to sixth following a 63 percent dip in sales. More alarmingly, after just four weeks DmC: Devil May Cry slumped all the way down to 25th. That's concerning considering how quiet 2013's been in terms of major releases so far.As for the rest of this week's ten best-sellers, there's been barely any movement. The remaining standouts are Hitman: HD Trilogy, which held steady in fifth place, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, which entered the top ten for the first time on the back of the newly released 3DS version.

  • Dead Space 3 resource farming glitch won't be patched, is intentional

A recently-discovered glitch in Dead Space 3 that allows players to farm infinite resources for item crafting isn't a glitch after all, according to EA's statement to GameFront. The method for obtaining said resources, skirting the game's microtransaction system, won't be patched out, either."The resource-earning mechanic in Dead Space 3 is not a glitch. We have no plans to issue a patch to change this aspect of the game. We encourage players to explore the game and discover the areas where resources respawn for free. We've deliberately designed Dead Space 3 to allow players to harvest resources by playing through the game," EA rep Jino Talens said. The microtransaction model, which allows players to skip the resource-gathering at a cost, is still an option for players. "For those that wish to accumulate upgrades instantly, we have enabled an optional system for them to buy the resources at a minimal cost ($1-$3)," Talens added. With the farming glitch going unchecked, it's more likely that Dead Space 3 players will spend that money on cheap burritos.

Dead Space 3's inclusion of campaign microtransactions incited a negative gut reaction from some potential players, and if we can count on one thing in life, it's people finding ways around things that make them uncomfortable. A glitch in Dead Space 3 allows players to infinitely farm random items from one room near the end of chapter eight, as discovered and recorded by Game Front.Dead Space 3 allows players to purchase materials for crafting weapons, in both single-player and co-op modes, alongside the standard scavenging and lucky find methods. For the record completed the game without using a single microtransaction, and we still found the experience enjoyable (in a terrifying kind of way).

  • Metareview: Dead Space 3

Spaceman, I always wanted you to go into space, man. And now that Dead Space 3 is here, you can, again. But is it any good? The Joystiq Chief of the Astronaut Office certainly thought so, deeming the series' third main entry an "exciting, shocking, and mammoth adventure through the ghostly, unvarnished segments of space."But it's a big old universe with plenty of opinions floating about, and not all of them are so positive. Here's a sampling of a few that popped up on the meta-radar. Game Informer (98/100): "Dead Space 3 is still creepy, but this entry is more action-packed than previous games. That's a good thing. Isaac's intuitive new dodge roll makes avoiding the larger nercromorph attacks more manageable." Polygon (95/100): "Visceral hasn't just avoided screwing up its game with co-op - it has made it feel natural and at home, and has done it without impacting the single-player experience in any negative way. That alone would be enough to make Dead Space 3 an achievement. But the new crafting system and bigger, more open level structure join co-op to make Dead Space 3 one of the best action games in years. GameSpot (80/100): "This is a game rife with options and flexibility, building on the strengths of the franchise with clever new ideas that let you tailor the experience to your liking. It hits a few sour notes in its story and struggles at times when it steps away from the core combat, but Dead Space 3 is a thrilling and worthwhile sequel." Eurogamer (70/100): "Dead Space 3 is a contradiction. Gorgeous but scruffy; tightly packed yet stretched too thin; often frustrating, frequently thrilling and bursting at the seams with stuff, not all of which fits comfortably inside the boundaries the series has set for itself. It's certainly not a great game, except perhaps as a poster child for the kitchen-sink development mentality of a console generation in its twilight months." Videogamer (50/100): "Dead Space 3 is a let down because it's not a very good action game, and a really substandard horror game. It is devoid of ideas, hung up on laborious combat and obsessed with making even the exciting seem boring. In truth, it's a bit of a shocker."

Dead Space 3 is out today, and you can start waiting for more as soon as you get it. That's thanks to the announcement of the "Awakened" DLC, due in March for PS3, PC, and Xbox 360, at a $10 price point. While narrative details are absent, EA does reveal that you'll "experience the franchise's darkest chapters as the Necromorph battles become even more gruesome and terrifying than ever before." Executive producer Steve Papoutsis calls Awakened "some of the most disturbing content" in any Dead Space game. So if you like being terrified and ... grued? ... you'll want to check this out.

  • Dead Space 3 review: Take down the terror, just a notch

Dead Space 3 is excellent, meaning I didn't enjoy very much of it. The torture is self-inflicted, and I only increased the severity by playing the game without company, without light and without those regular breaks they used to warn you about in the manual (ask your parents). The inclusion of co-op has made the solo stress no less potent.I was consumed by caution, leered at every suspicious air vent (protip: they're all like that), loathed every single monster, and stomped their revolting corpses with wild catharsis and fanaticism. Isaac Clarke may be the respectable engineer-turned-hero now, but I suspect his childhood siblings cowered in the closet every time he lifted his boot and brought it down in the rhythm of temper tantrums. All of these things, the concern over ammunition and health, the detestable creatures, the unnerving titter of what sounds like violin strings left in the rain, the creepy creaks and groans of a crappy space ship (protip: they're all like that) – all of these things make Dead Space 3 another extravagantly crafted concoction of horror, action and anxiety. So, no, it's not exactly "fun."%Gallery-178021%

  • Scream to access all of Dead Space 3's Kinect voice commands

Dead Space 3 doesn't want you to just scream in terror at the screen. With Kinect, Dead Space 3 allows players to say "more than 40 intuitive voice commands," rather than pressing all those pesky buttons. The image below outlines all of the voice commands players will be able to use, separated by interface, gameplay actions, skip and tram locations, and co-op actions. For example, to pull up the inventory the voice command is, "access inventory." To reload, it's "reload weapon," a paired attack escape is "get off me," and to call a partner over for aid it's "help me." Unfortunately there is no action triggered by the "scream like a banshee" voice command.

EA revealed nearly two million people have already downloaded the Dead Space 3 demo, at least 10 percent more than the total demo downloads for Dead Space 2. That's a whole lot of space engineers testing out fresh alien dismemberment to a Phil Collins backdrop.Dead Space 3 pre-order figures are also outdoing those of its predecessor, and that, in addition to today's demo figures, must give the publisher hope the series' third entry can be the one to break 5 million sales. The shooter takes one small step onto North American retail shelves tomorrow, before making one giant leap into Europe on Friday.

The Dead Space 3 story may get extended through DLC released in a few weeks' time. That's what a hint by game producer Steve Papoutsis seems to suggest, anyway. Papoutsis closed off a blog post today with a vague drop of a "top secret additional story.""As you can see, we have a lot planned for you in DS3," Papoutsis wrote. "And the team is hard at work on a top secret additional story that will be coming in a few weeks. We're not saying much, yet - but think 'disturbing' to get your imaginations going."Papoutsis also revealed there are four modes unlocked by beating the game once, namely New Game+, Classic Mode, Pure Survival Mode, and the return of Hardcore Mode, albeit with a new twist. New Game+ is as it sounds, the mode carrying over your upgrades and weaponry from the completed save. Classic Mode is single-player only, removes crafting, and employs 'classic' aiming to resemble the original Dead Space. Whereas Pure Survival is all about resource management; enemies are the only things that drop any goodies, and there are no ammo, health or weapon packs.Hardcore mode drops the three-saves-and-out of Dead Space 2, and replaces it with something that sounds far more evil. This time, you only have one life... yup, you read that right. And don't think it's something you can just avoid by going back to a previous save; as PlayStation Lifestyle details, once you die the game simply returns you to the start, end of. Evil. If we ever complete it, there better be a reward of free unlimited rainbows.

Dead Space 3 will chill the spines of many a space engineer when it launches into the retail atmosphere on February 5. Not that a wee bit of cold scares Isaac Clarke, as demonstrated by him taking off his helmet at sub-zero temperatures just so he can give the camera some fierceness.

Dead Space 3 will scare up extra revenues through its microtransaction system. Eurogamer reports that crafting materials in the game can be picked up by the player, scavenged by bots or purchased through the in-game store. Apparently there are guards in place to prevent players from buying the best gun in the game right from the start.Dead Space 3 associate producer Yara Khoury confirmed the feature, adding that purchases with real world money aren't required in the game. The in-game currency will be offered in different denominations, but there's currently no official details. The game's demo is available now on Xbox 360 and later today for PS3, following the PSN udpate.

A variant of Commander Shepard's N7 armor will be available in Dead Space 3 for those with a Mass Effect 3 save file. To obtain the armor for Dead Space 3 heroes Isaac Clarke and John Carver, players will need to purchase the full game of Dead Space 3 and make sure they have a Mass Effect 3 save file on that same platform. The bonus suit is available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.The Dead Space 3 demo should be generally available on Xbox 360 and PS3 tomorrow, January 22. Dead Space 3 will launch and cut up necromorphs on February 5 and 8 in North America and Europe, respectively.A similar armor trade promotion was done last year between Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Mass Effect 3.

Late last year we discovered that Dead Space 3's Kinect voice commands were best used during couch co-op, but here's a trailer in which EA is showing off some other commands. The Kinect functionality will allow players to "find objective," use stasis or "reload."That all sounds clever, but was tapping down the right analog stick for objectives, or hitting the X button to reload, like the buttons were mapped in Dead Space 2, really less efficient? We know, we know, so many buttons to remember!Maybe it's for when playing the game co-op with mom? You know, if she's into it.

We grew up in a household where swearing wasn't exactly commonplace, which made playing the particularly terrifying games of our collective youths somewhat of a challenge: Sometimes you just need to bust out some language, especially when the going gets tough and your courage gets going.Kids these days though, with their newfangled Kinect devices, will get more from cursing out their horror games than just a talking to from Dad, at least as far as Dead Space 3 is concerned: "There are commands where you might be in a certain situation and you might yell a specific expletive and it might behave in a way that you want it to," Dead Space 3 executive producer Steve Papoutsis told CVG, regarding the game's "Better With Kinect" functionality on the 360. "We definitely have done some things there."As we discovered earlier this month, Kinect voice commands are primarily used to trade items between players and accomplish other communal goals during co-op play. Of course, all that intended functionality will take place after the solid 30 minute swearing session scheduled to commence as soon as the game is first turned on.
