Comparing the Dead Space Aftermath to the works of Akira Kurosawa might seem strange but, believe it or not, this video explains that the animated film borrows from Kurosawa's Rashomon. Specifically, it's told through flashbacks. Also, it totally rips off the space zombie scene.

This trailer, titled "Origins," is a galaxy-wide view of everything going on in the Dead Space franchise, from the recent sequel to the various animated films and recent novelization. We just have one question: Where exactly does Skate 3's Isaac Clarke fit in with all of this?

We like writing flip, humorous headlines around here, but this one is pretty much as spot-on as it can be. After the break, find a 1:38-long clip of Dead Space Aftermath presented without any context. Weirdly, it even ends mid-sentence. There are dead bodies and spaceships though, so check it out.

Man, if you thought Dead Space was gory, wait until you see its next cartoon adaptation. Yes, that's kind of a weird statement, but after watching this Dead Space Aftermath trailer -- which has an astonishing murders-per-second ratio -- we feel like it's accurate enough.

EA has announced a release date for the upcoming Dead Space Aftermath animated movie. The film will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 24 in Europe, and January 25 in the US. MSRP is $34.99, but some outlets (including Amazon at the moment) are selling it for even cheaper than that already. The film will also come bundled in a double pack with 2008's animated tie-in, Dead Space Downfall. The film will supposedly serve as a prequel to Dead Space 2, about a group sent by the Government to the Aegis VII disaster from the first animated film, in order to "test" the "effects" of Marker shards. Sounds like a recipe for "trouble" (and some gory scares). Between this release next month and the demo later on this month, the Dead Space franchise is about to get a whole lot livelier.

  • Dead Space lives in two new formats: animated movie and graphic novel out this winter

The Dead Space universe just got a bit less lonely. EA announced two more projects for the property, this time an animated feature called Dead Space Aftermath, available January 2011, and a graphic novel called Dead Space Salvage, expected out December 2010. Perfect for those of you who love Dead Space, but somehow hate video games. The animated Aftermath tells the story of a group sent by the Government to the site of the Aegis VII disaster, specifically to be exposed to Marker shards, in order to create a carrier for a "Marker blueprint." Of course, the people don't know that's why they've been brought there, and since it's horror (and Dead Space) we can expect the expedition to go ... well, not great. The Salvage comic, published by IDW, is about a group called the "Magpies" who come across the abandoned Ishimura, which is full of candy Government agents and necromorphs. We'll learn more details about these projects during today's Comic-Con panel, "Building a Horror Entertainment Franchise: Dead Space 2."
