We're live from Microsoft Build 2011!
There's been a lot of speculation surrounding what's going down at this week's Microsoft Build developers conference, and now we're here, in the land of the cartoon mouse (that's right -- right around the corner from Disneyland), hoping to get to the bottom of all the Windows 8 talk. We've already been privy to a number of previews and teases and even caught a quick glimpse of a handful of ARM-equipped Windows 8 development devices. We've reported on an upcoming Windows 8 App Store, a WP7-style Start Menu and, most recently, some super speedy boot times. All of these are part of a much bigger puzzle, one that's already promised to shake up the Windows brand, but we've yet to get a full reveal. If you ask us, it's about time Microsoft let it all hang out, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens. WWDC 2010 officially announced
At long last, the wait is over. Apple has officially announced WWDC 2010. The "center of the app universe" will take place from June 7th - 11th at Moscone West in sunny San Francisco, California. This year's event has five major sessions and lab categories: Application Frameworks, Core OS, Developer Tools, Graphics and Media and finally Internet & Web. For those who have wondered if Apple will be giving equal emphasis to traditional Mac development versus the iPhone OS platform, well, this picture says a thousand words. This is not a new OS X year but it is a big new iPhone OS device year and the conference schedule reflects that emphasis. This is certainly the latest date that Apple has ever announced its WWDC dates in recent years (typically, it's announced in early March -- and once in late January). Developers will be glad to know they can finally schedule the rest of their Spring and Summer. Tickets are on sale now for US$1,599. Just remember, attendees must agree to the Registered Apple Developer Terms and Conditions as part of the conference ticket purchase process. We'll see you in June!
WWDC early registration pricing extended
Save, save, save! Deals, deals, deals!An email from Apple is making the rounds this morning with the announcement that early registration pricing has been extended to May 9th. Sign up between now and then and save $300US. Yippee!WWDC '08 will take place between June 9-13 in San Francisco, CA. There are more than 150 sessions scheduled, including the new iPhone track.As usual, anticipation (and rumors) abounds as visions of iPhone 2.0, the App Store and more tease us all. Oh, and if you happen to run into Woz, console him on his recent breakup.
PS3 dev kit BSOD... sorta
For the Develop Conference in Brighton, Sony (who was the primary sponsor of the conference) set up a booth equipped with multiple PSP "pods" and a couple of large widescreen LCDs showing PS3 tech demos. One of the demonstrations was a large shoal of different types of fish swimming around a large space, and the other was a 3D water simulation with semi-realistic waves.I spent a few seconds playing with the surprisingly light Dual Shake controller -- my first time, I didn't attend E3 -- and pressed select. For whatever reason, and this is why development kits are generally never shown to the public, the demo slowed to a halt, with the nice blue picture jerking away at 3fps continuously in the frame. In a technical sense this isn't a blue screen of death, but it did die displaying a blue screen, so therefore I proudly claim the title of "world's first non-developer to cause a PlayStation 3 to display a blue screen of death". It's certainly the most pretty pseudo-BSOD that I've ever seen.
