  • Chaos Theory: A guide to auxiliary weapons in The Secret World

With Issue #7 A Dream to Kill inching closer and closer, my anticipation for the new auxiliary weapon coming to The Secret World is reaching near impossible heights. I'll admit it: As a pyro at heart, I am giddy with the thought of wrapping my hands around a permanent flamethrower! And I'm certainly not alone in that sentiment, either. But an excitement for the new weapon doesn't diminish any of the current ones that are already in game; each auxiliary weapon -- the rocket launcher, the chainsaw, the quantum brace, and the whip -- is awesome in its own right with distinct skills and style. Is one right for you? Heck yeah! If you aren't taking advantage of an auxiliary weapon, you are depriving yourself of some extra oomph in your fights, not to mention an eighth active and passive skill on your hot bar. How do you know which one is better for you? Honestly, you needn't choose just one; as with regular weapons, you can earn all four. But with a hefty price of 35 SP per weapon, payable all at once, it's impossible to get more than one at a time. So which do you choose first? And then how do you go about getting it? This guide will give a general overview of the four current auxiliary weapons and the paths to acquiring them.

These last few weeks have not been full of good news for fans of Funcom or its nifty modern-day horror-fantasy mashup called The Secret World. There were some layoffs. There was a content delay or three. There were hints of free-to-play (which, despite all the in-roads made over the past year, is still seen as something approaching failure by portions of the gaming populace). And let's not forget the requisite comment section naysaying that accompanies any MMO. Join me after the cut and I'll tell you why none of that stuff worries me.

After a number of delays, first because of company restructuring and then because of a serious potential exploit, The Secret World's second update is finally live and ready for players to experience. Digging Deeper introduces TSW's first new weapon -- a rocket launcher -- as well as new missions and new nightmare modes for two dungeons, The Facility and Hell Eternal dungeons. Characters interested in a new look will also be able to change their 'do at Ockham's Razor in London and get a facelift from Dr. Anton Aldini in Brooklyn. Players will also see new loot bags dropping from all region bosses. These include various goodies like blueprints to summon the boss, epic items, and unique raid puzzle pieces. More information about this update can be found in the official patch notes.

After two delays already, The Secret World players may have already suspected what Funcom recently announced -- the second monthly update for the game has been postponed yet again. Hopefully, the third time's the charm. This third delay stems from the same exploit initially found on Tuesday that forced the second one, which pushed Digging Deeper back by one day. Apparently, more time is needed to remove the issue and thoroughly test the client. Issue #2 -- with its rocket launcher, new make-up and hairstyles, and additional missions -- will be deployed to live servers next week.

Ready for the skinny on Issue #2 of The Secret World? Good because we have it in the form of a new video showcasing the new features from tomorrow's content patch. You've heard about the new rocket launcher weapon, of course, but did you know that it also comes with seven auxiliary abilities that necessitate a brand-new auxiliary ability wheel? The rocket launcher is also the tip of the iceberg in terms of new weapons going forward. Tomorrow's Digging Deeper update also brings us new avatar customization options. Travel to Ockham's Razor in London or The Modern Prometheus in New York City to check out all the new makeup, facial hair, and hairstyle options (Funcom is doubling the total number of available hairstyles with this patch). New missions are on tap too, including a continuation of the Kingsmouth Code investigation series. Get a good look at all this in more in the clip after the break. [Update: Apparently the Digging Deeper update is now coming tomorrow instead of today. We've changed the wording of this post to reflect that.]

Fans looking forward to the already delayed issue #2 in The Secret World will have to wait an extra day. Funcom just tweeted that Digging Deeper will be deployed on live servers on Wednesday, September 12th, instead of the 11th. The extra day is meant to ensure that everything is working as intended. According to the announcement, the downtime details are currently unknown but will be announced via the usual channels when available.

Are you friendless in The Secret World? Has your guild game-hopped to the next new shiny, leaving you to wander the paths of Transylvania cold and alone? Take heart! Next week's Digging Deeper update will not only feature a bunch of new content but also a new group finder tool. It's cross-dimensional too, so you're free to pick from the entire online playerbase when forming a party. The patch drops on Tuesday, September 11th.

After increasingly bad news out of Funcom in regard to The Secret World's unexpectedly low sales, Creative Director and Senior Producer Ragnar Tørnquist penned a State of the Game address today outlining the studio's plans for keeping The Secret World just as it is. "We're not going to play it safe," Tørnquist assures players. "We won't be introducing classes or levels, elves or dwarves, and regardless of the competition, we won't back down from our original vision. We're going to keep doing what we're good at. We'll continue to push the boundaries, and we'll keep reinventing the wheel (quite literally). Five years ago, we set out to revolutionise the genre, and the revolution has just begun." Tørnquist points to a "bright future" for The Secret World with the upcoming second issue, named Digging Deeper, and a third yet-unnamed issue that will tie in with the game's Halloween event.

It's been a rough week for Funcom, as The Secret World developer has been busy dealing with post-launch layoffs and finding work for those affected. As such, the game's second monthly content patch has been delayed until September 11th. The Digging Deeper content drop was originally scheduled to go live on Tuesday, August 28th. The patch features new abilities, action and investigation missions, and a new rocket launcher weapon. Avatar customization is also getting a makeover, with tweaks available via a Brooklyn-based plastic surgeon or a London-area barber shop. "We will also continue to push out regular content like announced before," Funcom says on it's official website. "This small delay is merely due to the re-organization and assessment of processes that has been initiated. We are working hard to get back on track as soon as possible."

The Secret World's second major content drop is coming on August 28th. The Digging Deeper update includes new avatar customization options, new investigation and action missions, and last but not least, the game's first post-launch weapon addition. The weapon in question is a rocket launcher that boasts seven new abilities, an eighth ability hotbar slot, and a new auxiliary ability wheel. If you're unhappy with the results of your initial character creation session, you can visit Dr. Anton Aldini in Brooklyn or Ockham's Razor barber shop in London for facial feature and hairstyle customization. New missions include the titular Digging Deeper, which continues the story thread originally introduced in The Kingsmouth Code. Finally, the August update will add nightmare modes to the The Facility and Hell Eternal dungeons. More info is available at the official Secret World website. And don't forget about the newly announced free trial; anyone can sign up for three free days of The Secret World. If three days isn't enough, you can earn an additional two days and 1200 bonus points when you complete 30 missions.
