This Halloween weekend, many major game distributors are treating us to some massive sales on games they consider "scary," "dark," or that include zombies. To make the scavenging easy while you put the final touches on your Pyramid Head costume (you freak), we've compiled the Halloween-weekend deals from EA, GoG, Direct2Drive, Namco Bandai and OnLive right here. The trick? We're eating all the candy ourselves, and you get none. Boo-ya.

  • Weekend Sale Roundup: Origin and Direct2Drive

For a lot of people, Friday means pay-day, which means a weekend full of extravagant spending: a little boutique shopping, perhaps a night at da club, etc. If you're like us though, and the majority of your pay checks are followed by staying in rather than going out, fear not. Huge weekend sales mean you can still feel like a big spender without having to blow an entire check, all from the comfort of your own home. Origin's $5 PC offerings are back, along with a slew of fairly-recent console titles like Dead Space 2 and Portal 2 for 40 percent off. Both sales run until August 9, and every console game purchased comes with a complimentary PC copy of Need for Speed Shift. Direct2Drive, not to be left out of the fun, has both Bulletstorm and Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition marked down to $11.95 a piece. No sale expiration date is listed for either title, which could mean that both are ending right this very second, the thought of which instills a primal fear directly into the shopping cortex of your brain.

While Steam users gorge themselves on a two-week-long carnival of deals and specially-created achievements, Direct2Drive is going full-on bacchanal with a full month of savings, changing both daily and weekly. Today, for example, you can pick up Fallout 3: GOTY Edition for $9.85 and Empire: Total War for just $7.95. Sorry to be crass, but if we have to gobble up deals like this for a whole month, we're gonna need a feather and one heck of a vomitorium.

  • GameFly acquisition of Direct2Drive official

Today, game rental service GameFly confirmed last week's rumor that it will acquire the digital game retailer Direct2Drive from IGN. The acquisition of Direct2Drive will add more than 3,000 PC and Mac games to GameFly's existing library of console titles. While terms of the deal are not disclosed in the announcement, IGN will gain a minority equity stake in GameFly but have no direct role in its operations or governance. "Only GameFly can offer a complete library of physical and digital games for the PC, Mac and consoles in one place." David Hodess, CEO of GameFly gloats. Although Direct2Drive currently offers a small handful of downloadable game rentals, no plans for including PC and Mac rentals through GameFly are discussed in the announcement; however, Joystiq confirmed with David Hodess that the option is being explored. "We know that consumers are interested in PC/Mac rentals and intend to investigate this opportunity thoroughly," Hodess told us. He also confirmed that Direct2Drive promotions like IGN membership discounts and the refer-a-friend program will continue after the acquisition is complete.

  • Rumor: IGN selling Direct2Drive to Gamefly

IGN's Direct2Drive is allegedly being sold to GameFly, MCV reports. An official announcement is expected next week. Direct2Drive does offer a limited selection of game rentals, which fits in directly with GameFly's business model. Sources, while unable to confirm the sale, do tell us that IGN has been looking to unload D2D for some time. This would be the second major announcement out of News Corp's IGN in under a month. The company announced in early May it was merging with UGO, and reports indicated that the company would spin off from News Corp. IGN and GameFly told Joystiq in perfect harmony that neither company will "comment on rumors or speculation."

    03.31.2011

In celebration of, um, March, Direct2Drive is reducing the price of this month's top fifteen games by fifteen percent. The list of titles includes the likes of Dead Space 2, Rift, Shogun 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Crysis 2 and Bulletstorm. Fifteen percent amounts to a reasonably hefty $9 discount on $60 titles and around $7.50 on $50 titles, and it also has the effect of lowering Magicka's already ridiculously low $10 price to just $8.50. Head over to Direct2Drive to see the full list of titles, and enter the promo code "MARCHMAYHEM" at checkout to receive the discount.

  • Gaming giving back to Japan this weekend

There have been plenty of opportunities to help the earthquake and tsunami-ravaged country of Japan this week, but we've got a few more in case you're feeling generous this weekend. Through tomorrow, for every game purchased through Direct2Drive, the company will donate $1 to Japanese disaster relief. Many companies (a full list can be found here) will even match that donation. Bungie is currently selling a special blue "Japan Quake Relief 2011" wristband, the proceeds of which go directly to the Red Cross. The bracelet will be especially helpful in setting yourself apart from those Scrooges who wait until next year to donate. Providing the least materially rewarding but perhaps most charitable choice, Sony has added an option to PSN that allows you to donate directly from your PlayStation Wallet. It's in the "Aid Japan" section under "New Releases." C'mon, stingy, that's not even real money! Surely you can spare a few imaginary bucks! Want to be entertained for your cash? The Sanctuary Crew is streaming gaming action all weekend in the hopes of luring in donors. Find all the details here or give directly to the International Rescue Committee.

  • Feral Interactive offers digital downloads on multiple online stores

    by

    01.13.2011

Here's a cool note I missed last week among the hustle and bustle of CES: Feral Interactive is one of the biggest publishers of Mac games out there, often porting and publishing games from larger PC developers over to the Mac platform. Last week, the company announced that four games it has published (Borderlands, Rome: Total War, LEGO Harry Potter and Bioshock) would be available for sale through three different digital download services (Direct2Drive, GamersGate and the MacGameStore). That's good news, not only for Mac gamers who want more options to pick from for their games, but for the platform as a whole. Steam has made plenty of headlines, both during the launch and since, but a deal like this shows that there is demand for Mac games even beyond the most popular digital store online. Direct2Drive especially is a fairly large digital store known for PC game sales, and the fact that Feral games are now available on the service is a nice indicator of how popular the Mac platform is becoming among gamers and other users.

  • All MMOs 20 percent off at Direct2Drive, Fallout: New Vegas $20 off this weekend

    01.07.2011

Direct2Drive's running a pretty sweet deal for anyone looking to reach out and touch other members of the gaming community (in a completely non-weird way, we mean) -- until Monday morning, the site's entire catalog of MMOs is discounted 20 percent. That includes massively multiplayer gems like World of Warcraft, Star Wars Galaxies, Lego Universe, Guild Wars and more; just input the coupon code "JOKER" while checking out, and watch the prices fall like so, so many enemy NPCs. If you'd rather play a game which rivals the length of an MMO, but lacks all the other human contact, the retailer is also knocking $20 off the price of Fallout: New Vegas from this Saturday until Monday morning. You don't need a coupon code for that one, though if there were one, we imagine it'd be something like "NUKA COLA" or "CREEPY HOVERING NO-BONES MAN."

  • Direct2Drive knocks 20% off entire library this weekend, 50% off THQ and Atari games

    12.11.2010

Direct2Drive has quite a sale brewing this weekend. First and foremost, the company is offering 20 percent off its entire library of titles. Furthermore, the discount also applies to pre-orders and games that are already on sale. To cash in on the promotion, use the promo code "HOHOHO" during checkout. The deal runs until Monday at 10am PST. Two other deals are also on offer: First, the Atari Complete Collection is 50 percent off this weekend, knocking the usual $531.50 price down to $265.75. We should point out that "Complete" probably isn't the right word here, though there are a handful of decent titles in the collection, including Star Trek Online Digital Deluxe Edition, The Witcher Enhanced Edition Director's Cut and more. Finally, THQ titles are also 50 percent off this weekend.

Direct2Drive has launched a promotion in which it designates a "Publisher of the Week," and then takes a different game from said publisher and cuts its price in twain (or more) each weekday. This week, it's 2K's turn, resulting in mad price cuts on gems like Borderlands and BioShock 2.
