Now there’s some new paid DLC to entice players back into the sewers. The ‘Dimension Shellshock’ update was released today and brings new characters and a new game mode.

‘Streets of Rage 4’ is shaping up to be a worthy sequel

Streets of Rage 4's announcement landed with a bit of a thud. The original trilogy of Genesis games is beloved, and for many remains the benchmark for the genre. It's now been 15 years since Streets of Rage 3, and a teaser trailer for a new game showing a cast of hand-drawn characters against some decidedly modern music looked more like a Saturday morning cartoon than a faithful new chapter. While many were excited for the return, a vocal group voiced their concerns.

However well Streets of Rage 4 turns out, it should at least have a top-tier soundtrack. Guard Crush Games, Lizardcube and Dotemu have revealed that the side-scrolling beat-em-up will have music from Motohiro Kawashima and Yuzo Koshiro, both of whom produced soundtracks for the original Streets of Rage games. They'll tap into the "thumping club anthems" you may remember from the first three titles while creating new sounds.

Does the video game industry need E3?

E3 is not a place for us." Steve Filby handles marketing for Motion Twin, the studio behind Dead Cells, and he's been building and shipping games for the past six years. Dead Cells is one of the hottest independent titles around, following a wildly successful stint on Steam Early Access, where the studio sold more than 730,000 copies in just one year -- before the game was technically finished. It's a bright and sprawling roguelike reminiscent of Castlevania, and since officially launching in August, it's picked up a handful of accolades, including two nominations at the 2018 Game Awards. Dead Cells did all of this without exhibiting at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, the video game industry's most publicized trade show.

'Streets of Rage 4' revives Sega's beat 'em up classic

Streets of Rage has received ports to other platforms, but a true sequel? Not since 1994. You're in for a treat if you miss Sega's classic left-to-right broawler, though. Lizardcube, Guard Crush Games and Dotemu have unveiled Streets of Rage 4, a proper sequel with updated mechanics, a "fresh story" and, naturally, plenty of thugs to thrash. The developers are saying precious little beyond that, but you can play two-player co-op (as either Axel Stone or Blaze Fielding) -- and it's evident the art has taken a big step forward thanks to 24 years of technological progress.

The Wonder Boy series originally debuted in arcades in 1986, spawning five sequels over the next few years, namely Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. That platformer made its way to the Sega Master System in 1989, featuring colorful and rich gameplay with "Metroidvania" elements and rave reviews from critics upon its release.

By the dragon! Retro-revivalist DotEmu is bringing Double Dragon Trilogy to Steam, with the beat-em-up triforce penciled in for January 15. The collection of late 80s arcade is also coming to GOG and Amazon on the same day, but there's no word yet on prices. Double Dragon Trilogy stars the titular co-op classic and its two immediate sequels, DD2: The Revenge and DD3: The Rosetta Stone. It's already been raging the streets of iOS and Android for about a year, as well as Ouya since June 2014.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is charging back into gaming with a surprise pincer attack. Not only is the 1999 turn-based strategy returning to Windows PC with widescreen-friendly HD visuals, but it's also coming to iOS and Android, albeit for tablets only. If that has strategists of a certain age fidgeting at the thought of more all-nighters, the good news is they've barely more than a month to wait. Both the PC and tablet games are already scheduled for release on January 29, 2015.

A new Steam page reveals that come October 2, run-and-gunners can party like it's 1999 when SNK side-scroller Metal Slug X hits the portal. After reaching mobiles 18 months ago, the laser-toting, camel-riding, sometimes-mummified re-release of Metal Slug 2 is coming to PC with a $8 price tag. If you pre-purchase you can bring that down to $6. According to the Steam listing, there's support for both local and online two-player co-op, as well as online leaderboards and the standard six-mission arcade and mission select modes. Full controller support is also available, but sadly, Windows XP support is not. Sorry, XP.

Eric Chahi's classic side-scrolling adventure game Another World may soon see a re-release across multiple consoles and portable platforms, a recent USK ratings submission suggests. Another World (released on 16-bit consoles as Out of This World) transports players to a harsh alien planet where they must fend off hostile humanoids and solve environmental puzzles to survive. The game saw an anniversary release on PC platforms in 2010, followed by ports for iOS and Android courtesy of retrogame remastering studio DotEmu. Another World's ratings submission points to future ports for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and PS Vita, with Digital Lounge listed as publisher. We've contacted DotEmu for more information regarding the listed release. [Image: DotEmu]

  • R-Type 2 coming to iOS and Android soon from Double Dragon Trilogy publisher

French retrogame porting studio DotEmu announced today that it plans to release Irem's classic arcade shoot-'em-up R-Type 2 for iOS and Android devices "soon," following up on its recent launch of the mobile brawler compilation Double Dragon Trilogy. Released in arcades in 1989 (and later semi-adapted for the Super NES in 1991's Super R-Type), R-Type 2 improves on its predecessor's horizontally-scrolling formula with new power-ups, weapons, and screen-filling boss battles. Veterans of 2009's XBLA compilation release R-Type Dimensions can attest that R-Type 2 is a far more difficult game than the original R-Type, and DotEmu's upcoming port is likely to inspire new waves of agony and and teeth-gnashing worldwide. DotEmu plans to offset R-Type 2's difficulty with an optional auto-fire feature, along with an "unlimited" mode that offers players infinite lives. The new mobile port also features unlockable achievements, worldwide leaderboards, and support for Bluetooth controllers.

  • Classic run-and-gunner Metal Slug 3 coming to Steam in February

SNK's run-and-gun action game Metal Slug 3 will launch on Steam in February. The arcade game first arrived in 2000, later leaping to multiple platforms like XBLA in early 2008, the Wii Virtual Console in May 2012 as well as iOS and Android in 2012. The Steam version will feature online cooperative multiplayer, leaderboards and cloud save support. In addition to the mobile ports, the Steam version was handled by DotEmu, a specialist in retro game adaptations. The developer previously brought the Double Dragon Trilogy to mobile and also took Another World to Mac, iOS and Android. DotEmu is currently hosting a closed beta for Metal Slug 3 on Steam.

  • Double Dragon Trilogy takes the fight to iOS, Android

Mobile retrogaming specialist DotEmu has released its arcade beat-'em-up compilation Double Dragon Trilogy for iOS and Android devices, following up on its previous mobile ports of R-Type and Out of This World. The collection includes the original arcade version of Double Dragon, along with its coin-op sequels Double Dragon 2: The Revenge and Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone. All games offer optional remixed soundtracks, Bluetooth-enabled co-op and controller support, and a new "mobile" difficulty mode that tones down the quarter-munching challenge of the arcade originals. Bear in mind that the arcade version of Double Dragon 3 is completely different from the widely hated NES version, but it's arguably just as bad; among other things, it served as an early progenitor of paid DLC, requiring players to insert additional quarters for weapons and other in-game bonuses. Fortunately, the mobile version lets you feed its virtual arcade machine with as many credits as you want, making the game a breeze.

Many gamers of a certain age (cough) spent entirely too much time fighting Abobo and pals in the Double Dragon series. If you're one of them, you'll be glad to hear that DotEmu has released its promised Double Dragon Trilogy for both Android and iOS. The $3 app faithfully recreates all three adventures of Billy and Jimmy Lee, including the soundtrack; if you're willing to introduce modern touches, you can get a mobile-optimized (read: easier) difficulty level as well as remastered music. Both versions support the brawler's signature co-op mode through Bluetooth, and they'll work with many gamepads. DDT isn't going to take you back to the days of pumping quarter after quarter into arcade cabinets, but it might be the next best thing.
