Overclocking the Nintendo DS is hardly anything new, but the mod-happy folks at XCM look to be taking a decidedly different approach with their new Hyper Gear case which, as you can see above, is actually a full-on replacement case for the currently non-hyper DS Lite. That approach gives you the added advantage of selectable turbo speeds and, of course, a rapid fire switch, both of which, as Technabob points out, will likely take quite a toll on battery life. No word on a price just yet, but it'll apparently be available from at least a few of the usual modding retailers in the next few weeks.[Via Technabob]

  • Zelda DS Lite mod demands slew of positive adjectives

Being a generally mild mannered and lackadaisical bunch, we become worried when an impressive DS Lite mod appears on eBay and suddenly implants within us desires that are nothing short of sinister. Crafted by the same hands and mechanical forceps (probably) that produced an equally attractive Legend of Zelda Wii makeover just over a month ago, this particular variant of Nintendo's portable powerhouse demands a dramatic increase in our current rupee supply. We don't care how many blades of grass we have to mercilessly chop down or how many pots must be senselessly shattered to further our goal. This little device, with its customized charging stand and LED that is "calibrated to not be overbearing or too dim" must be ours. Or yours, if you outbid us. True, a portion of your money would go to Penny Arcade's Child's Play charity, but we'd forever hold a grudge. The kind of grudge that will see all your precious (and amusingly buoyant) pigs tossed into the nearest ocean.%Gallery-2941%[Via DS Fanboy]

  • Obnoxiously bright DS buttons

What the blurry image above is showing you is yet another mod for the DS Lite. Gamer Grandpasmurf found a tutorial on AcidMods that helped him put blue LED lights underneath transparent buttons that he purchased on NDS-Central. To demonstrate their glowing power, he filmed himself playing Final Fantasy III. They seem to work great and no real damage was done to his DS. Call it the angle of the camera, but we find these a little too bright for our taste. See the video after the break and tell us what you think.

  • DS Phat mod shows patriotism

If it were possible, we'd probably just go ahead and rename this blog DS Mod Fanboy and switch to posting about all of the fantastic mods the community has performed on DS Phats and Lites alike. If we did that, however, we'd probably only be able to post one mod a week and would quickly fall from what little grace we currently have into Internet Hell (it's a lot like eastern Montana). That won't stop us from posting one of the more inspired mods we've seen submitted to DS Fanboy, however. With a sense of patriotism Rambo himself could not even rival, reader and Canadian citizen Dean Welsh went ahead and "Maple'd" the crap out of his DS Phat. Good job on the mod Dean!See also: DS Phat promiscuous mod DS Lite Crystal Navy mod DS Phat light mod Koopa mod Game and Watch mod Old School mod Tank mod Famicom mod [Thanks for sharing Dean!]
