  • It's an XBL Deal of the Week extrabonanza

If Xbox Live were a used car lot, it would be positively festooned with colorful flags and packed to the brim with giant, inflatable animals this week. Six XBLA games have reduced prices this week and, what's more, each one is actually worth your attention. Worms 2: Armageddon, Peggle and Duke Nukem 3D have all seen their prices knocked from 800 ($10) to a pittance: 400 ($5). Meanwhile, Serious Sam HD, Battlefield 1943 and Call of Duty Classic have dropped from 1200 ($15) to 800 ($10). Add all those up and you've got six nutritious, filling games for $45 (through Sunday). Seriously though, Peggle? For $5? And Worms 2? You'd have to have heart of stone (or a wallet filled with moths) to turn that down. • Xbox Live Deal of the Week: Duke Nukem 3D for $5

With a lengthy campaign, multiplayer mode and a new rewind feature, the XBLA iteration of Duke Nukem 3D is arguably the best installment in the franchise, and easily the most ... well, released. Fortunately, the pig-mutant massacring simulator is the current Xbox Live Deal of the Week, and has its price temporarily reduced from 800 ($10) to 400 ($5). We'd suggest checking the game out right now, as whatever player base it might still possess is probably going to get stolen away when that other revamped shooter comes out on XBLA next month.

According to a recent tweet from 3D Realms' George Broussard, Duke Nukem 3D will be next week's Xbox Live Deal of the Week. Already pretty cheap at 800 ($10), Broussard says the game will be reduced to a mere 400 ($5). That's 39 levels, online multiplayer and the nifty rewind feature, which lets you rewind to a safe point in the level upon death, for just $5. Not bad. Oh, as an added bonus, if you can manage to snag all the Achievements, you can even unlock some images of the "upcoming" Duke Nukem Forever. That's pretty exciting, right?

Wired's piece on the events leading up to the end of Duke Nukem Forever's 12 year development cycle may not give the full story, thanks to the continuing legal issues between publisher Take-Two and developer 3D Realms, but it does a solid job of putting together the fragmented anecdotes of anonymous employees and people close to the events. The feature is a cautionary tale of ego, ambition and failure. DNF's drama is a yarn that publishers, developers and the press will turn to for years (decades?) to come as the quintessential example of game development gone terribly wrong, terribly publicly. Definitely check it out if you've never gone down the rabbit hole of Duke Nukem Forever's distracted development. [Thanks, Sean]

Duke Nukem 3D has found another revenue stream, this time on the iPhone as the seminal FPS shoots onto the App Store for $2.99 -- as part of a "one day special launch sale." We're not sure what the normal price would be, but with Civilization Revolution launching yesterday at $4.99, Duke's adventure from 13 years ago had better not ask for much more. AppGamer notes that initial feedback on the title has been positive, though there's no "lite" version to test out. The game has the "thumb-stick style controls," but also comes with "slider-style controls." If you've already played this on your morning commute, be sure to share your opinion in the comments below! [Thanks, Chris]

That's right, everyone's favorite ass kicker and bubble gum enthusiast is making a new home on the iPhone, as IGN reports 3D Realms' superb FPS, Duke Nukem 3D, will be available on the iPhone App store soon. Ported by Machineworks Northwest, this direct PC port will feature the entire original game, so you'll be able to tip those working girls and relieve yourself in the game's many bathrooms soon enough. After spending some time with a preview build, IGN had nothing but good things to say, especially about the improved graphics. IGN didn't knock the controls, either, and said there will be two options: tap-to-shoot and a classic scheme. There's no word on when the game will be available on the App store, but we'll be sure to let you know as soon as it is.

Week after week, Good Old Games bring us a bountiful list of memories from our childhood. This week the company's bringing not just Duke Nukem 3D for $5.99, but the announcement that Apogee Software has agreed to distribute through GOG's digital distribution platform. (Wait, does that mean Commander Keen as well?!)From what GOG has confirmed with us, Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project, Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, Blake Stone: Planet Strike, and Rise of the Triad: Dark War are all in the queue for "the upcoming weeks." (So, no Commander Keen then, eh?) If you'd like a refresher on how hilarious and ridiculous hilarculous the Duke can be, check out the modern-classic Duke Nukem Trilogy trailer from last year's E3 after the break.[Thanks, Brent]

  • Duke Nukem 3D takes most played XBLA title of the week

Apparently when Duke told gamers to "come get some," they took him up on the offer. According to Major Nelson, after a four week stranglehold as the most played Xbox Live Arcade title available for the popular downloadable service Castle Crashers has dropped to second place following the release of Duke Nukem 3D, last week. Is it possible the clichéd 90's hero has a place in the industry again? Maybe Duke Nukem Forever is more important that we initially thought. Maybe Duke Nukem Forever will actually be released! Okay, let's not go crazy now. Duke Nukem 3D on the Xbox Live Arcade transports gamers through the way-back machine to a simpler time of first-person action with nipple tassels and pigs dressed as police officers. Originally released on the PC in January 1996, Duke Nukem 3D follows the title character as he battles an evil horde of enemies through movie theatres, strip clubs and fast food restaurants (to name a few). Rated M for Mature, the Xbox Live Arcade release of the title includes the ability to rewind sections of gameplay, create saved films and boasts numerous multiplayer options.

Nabbed all of the achievements in Duke Nukem 3D for the Xbox Live Arcade? Congratulations, you've just unlocked two images for a game that was announced around the time some of you were born! Duke Nukem Forever, which was first announced in 1997, has been the long awaited return of 90's shooter "icon" and CIA gun-for-hire Duke Nukem. Obtaining all 12 achievements in the recently released Xbox Live Arcade release of Duke Nukem 3D unlocked two images for the upcoming (heh) sequel. Don't want to go through all the trouble? You've soldiered through the entirety of the recent XBLA re-release of Duke Nukem 3D, taking special care to fulfill the game's unique achievement requirements. You receive the standard reward for your hard work and dedication, a 200 point boost to your already impressive Gamerscore -- though you quickly realize with glee that 3D Realms has provided an additional prize for your feat: Two new screenshots for a game that is never, ever, ever coming out. Yes, unlocking every achievement in Duke Nukem 3D reveals two new screenshots for the title's oft-delayed follow-up in the art gallery. Though some may consider it a stretch to call screenshots from the Duke's supposedly upcoming title "art", we find any sign of life for the highly-quotable shooter utterly refreshing.

For the sake of full disclosure, we loved Duke Nukem 3D when it was first released over 10 years ago. So, we might be a teeny bit biased, but that doesn't keep Duke from being one of the best FPS games on XBLA. In fact, we'd say it is the best, with no disrespect to Marathon or Doom. For 800 Microsoft Points, you get a substantial campaign and 8 player online multiplayer and co-op. Not too shabby. Check out the latest XBLA in Brief to see all the reasons why Duke Nukem 3D is worth it. (Warning: the video is mildly NSFW.) [iTunes] Subscribe to X3F TV directly in iTunes. It seems like it took forever, but Duke Nukem 3D is now finally available on Xbox Live Arcade. Take on the role of Duke Nukem, badass with a heart of gold, whose mission is to save the planet earth (and its chicks) from a horde of alien scum. The Xbox Live Arcade version sports saved films, a new rewind feature (no more constant saving!), and online multiplayer and co-op for up to 8 players. If you've never played Duke, we suggest you give it a try. It really is a great shooter, and introduced many previously unseen features in the first person shooter genre (like payable strippers, for example). The full version can be yours for 800 Microsoft Points.

Lines you're likely to hear from this week's Xbox Live Arcade release, Duke Nukem 3D: "What are you waiting for? Christmas?" "It's time to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I'm all out of gum" "I ain't afraid of no quake!" "What are you? Some bottom-feeding, scum sucking algae eater?" "Hmm, that's one "Doomed" Space Marine." "I should have known those alien maggots booby trapped the sub." "And I thought 10 guns was hard to carry!" "Damn! I'm looking good!" "Nobody jacks with our Independence!" "I can't wait to play myself in Duke Nukem Forever, coming Fall 1998." Killing alien scum will cost you 800 ($10).

We've known it for quite a while already, but team Microsoft just officially announced that this Wednesday, September 24th, the Duke will be making his way to the Xbox Live Arcade with the release of Duke Nukem 3D. Huzzah! For only 800 Microsoft points (no longer rumored), you'll be able to grab a copy of Duke Nukem 3D and re-live all your Duke destruction memories with over 39 levels of mayhem, an eight player co-op / versus multiplayer, saved films, a new rewind feature and even an unlockable art gallery. It's Duke Nukem. On the XBLA. This Wednesday. Kick a**!

Thanks to some new screenshots making their way onto the interwebs, we have learned that multiplayer in Duke Nukem 3D will utilize the ever so convenient lobby system. A multiplayer system we fully endorse. So, thumbs up to that. Also, even though the official Duke 3D Xbox.com page has gone live, 3D Realms still hasn't announced the official pricing. But rumor has it that OXM's August November issue has a review of Duke 3D and in it they mention that the game costs 800 Microsoft points. Remember, Duke will grace the XBLA next Wednesday, so be sure to stock up on plenty of bubble gum. We recommend 5 gum, because it's yummy. [Thanks, racingfreak92]

  • Come get some Duke Nukem 3D trailer

File this under 'how did we miss this?'. A new trailer for Duke Nukem 3D was released earlier this week, and let's just say that it got our nostalgia zones all tingly. Sure, Duke brings back some good, good memories, but the trailer also reminds us that the Xbox Live Arcade version of Duke Nukem 3D is packed with new features. At the top of the list is 8 player online co-op and deathmatch (the original only supported 4 players). Let's not forget the ability to save and share gameplay videos either, or the ability to rewind the game when you die (no more saving every 5 seconds, hooray). Now, we might be a little biased, but we'd say that Duke Nukem 3D looks to be the best frakking Xbox Live Arcade game ever and you should buy it when it releases next week. Or, you could, you know, wait to hear how the game actually plays over Xbox Live. [Via XBLArcade]

Wednesday, September 24th. According to developer 3D Realms, that's the Xbox Live Arcade release date for Duke Nukem 3D. Duke 3D with saved films and a rewind feature! Huzzah! Just keep in mind that this isn't an official Microsoft release date announcement, so there's a 3% chance this release date could be wrong. And as far as pricing goes, that's still undecided, but 3D Realms promises to announce it in "a very short time." [Thanks, to everyone who sent this in]

The "highly anticipated" re-release of 3D Realms' Duke Nukem 3D received a release date on last night's exclusive-rich episode of GameTrailers TV. The revamped 1996 shooter will be parking its bricks in the XBLA toilet on Sept. 24, complete with eight-player co-op and Blinx-esque Braid-esque rewind capabilities. Also, it apparently has the ability to actually be released, giving it a leg up on the other Nukem title that's currently in production. No word yet on how many Micro-bucks it'll run the discerning, alien-hating 360 owner.

With all the Duke Nukem 3D news trickling in over the past few weeks, we know a lot about the game including some of the new additions, release date and even the game's achievements, but we really haven't seen the game in action or how the new rewind / video share features will work ... until now. Shacknews posted a quick and dirty Duke Nukem 3D hands-on writeup including video footage of the game menus, game footage and the two new features. All we can say is that those who suffered from Marathon motion sickness will probably become woozy after playing Duke on the XBLA. Yum, yum! [Via 3D Realms]

    08.22.2008

With it's September release already but solidified, we just learned that Duke Nukem 3D for the Xbox Live Arcade will also be sporting some new film saving features. According to a Microsoft representative at X08, Duke 3D will include both gameplay rewind and saved film video features. The rewind option will allow players to "undo" mistakes (like dying) or go back to a point earlier in the game, whereas the saved film feature will (expectedly) allow players to record and share Duke 3D multiplayer videos with gamers. Two interesting game additions that we totally didn't see coming, but are welcomed none the less. Two features we'd also like another Duke game to incorporate, somehow.
