According to Tateru Nino at Dwell On It, Duran Duran had promised its presence in the world of Second Life back in 2006. Second Life residents were hungry like a wolf for more information, but the band was lost in a crowd. At long last, the band announced yesterday the launch of Duran Duran Universe, a new zone in Linden Lab's virtual world. Although there may be no dancing on the sand, community manager Crissy Welinder posted the official announcement to the Duran Duran website: "Duran Duran Universe is packed full of wonderful artistic treasures, interactive features, innovative multimedia and exciting events and games." Every part of the Second Life zone has been carefully selected by members of the band, and they hope it is one continuous party. For more information about Duran Duran Universe, don't twist through a dusty land, just visit the band's official website.

Apple has announced dates for this year's iTunes Festival London. Like last year, the festival will run every night in July. Sixty artists will be performing over thirty-one days at Camden's Roundhouse in London. Three of the confirmed bands are Linkin Park, Duran Duran and Rumer. As in years past, tickets to the shows are only available for free via competitions. Apple will be giving away a limited number of tickets for each showing. The entry form for the competition can be found here. Participants may apply for as many of the gigs as they'd like but are limited to the three confirmed bands for now. Those who can't make the festival should still be able to watch highlights, read the latest news and see behind-the-scenes photos on the event's Facebook and Twitter pages as they did in years past. Apple has also set up an official Ping page for the concert this year. All performances will also be recorded and sold on the iTunes Music Store worldwide.

  • Kojima says Peace Walker is a 'test' for Metal Gear Solid series

Metal Gear series creator Hideo Kojima's recently-opened Twitter account has likely been a roller coaster of emotions for those among you who can read Japanese. Unfortunately for us, not speaking the developer's native language almost caused us to nearly miss out on all of his 140-character thoughts, not to mention a few recent Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker infobombs. Kojima said about the upcoming game (as translated by Andriasang) that "It's difficult to show the interest and freshness of PW [Peace Walker] through video. [James] Cameron's Avatar was a huge hit because of the 3D video. That can't be communicated through text and a trailer. It's something you won't understand unless you experience it for yourself in the theater." Kojima further posits that Peace Walker is a "horizontal expansion" for the studio (read: gameplay) rather than a vertical one (read: graphics), all the while reiterating that the PSP isn't the "main platform" for the series going forward. He also says that the roast beef sandwich he had for lunch yesterday was positively delightful. (Okay, okay, we made up that last part.) He does, however, show some Duran Duran love. (And no, we're not kidding about that part.)

This week's Wii Rock Band DLC offering not only delivers the eclectic mix from last week's Rock Band Weekly announcement, but also adds ample variety of its own. With 25 tracks available, across many different genres of music, there's likely something in the list to satiate the DLC track hunger. This is the dim sum of Rock Band Wiikly announcements. Check out the full list after the break.

  • Cinemassively: Duran Duran song zooms in on Second Life

After all of the hype about Duran Duran coming to Second Life, I don't think they ever actually performed. For months, Duran Duran fans, Duranies, piled into Second Life hoping to be there for the arrival of their favorite group. One couple even had time to meet, fall in love, and get married in real life while they waited. However, the virtual world must have left an impression on them. Their latest CD, Red Carpet Massacre, has a track, Zoom In, that is all about SL! Does anyone else think it's funny that Timbaland produced the song? The Machinima itself isn't much to look at. I'm pretty sure that Teknosapien just combined footage from an old video, by Phaylen Fairchild, with real footage of the band. However, it does a decent job of illustrating the song.Read on after the jump for the lyrics ...

  • Don't stop believing; Journey's coming to Second Life

Mark February 1st, fans of the 80's: Journey will be opening their brand-new sim in Second Life, 'Journey Rock Band'. Personally, I'm surprised they didn't go with something more fan-relatable; I'd have called it 'Frontiers', or 'Wheel in the Sky', or, best of all, 'Kohoutek'. Throw the fans a bone, huh?Regardless, the opening will also feature a meet-and-greet with the band, though, of course, Steve Perry won't be there. The party starts at 10 AM SLT and will feature a DJ spinning, what else? Journey songs! I have to say, every SL party I've ever been to has featured at least 2 Journey songs, with shouts of 'ZOMG JOURNEY' and 'I LOVE THIS SONG', so this is a good fit. Hell, it's at least a slap in the face of Duran Duran, who never made good on their previous promise. And hey, where ARE Gorillaz?

Reader Mescaline Tammas sends in this wonderfully-shot Second Life Machinima -- his entry to the "Duran Duran 'Falling Down' Video Mash-Up Challenge" (whew). It's a lovely video that contains bits of the official video for the song, as well as a few allusions to the new Duran Duran album, Alice in Wonderland, and possibly a couple of others I'm too obtuse to pick up. Today's Cinemassively is brought to you in honor of Moo Money, who is dealing with egregious RL issues right now. She sends her love and promises to return soon![Thanks, Mescaline!]
