  • Nokia E71 and E66 owners get free Ovi Maps navigation

Nokia's new Ovi Maps software just made its way to the venerable E71 and E66 business handsets. While Nokia was constrained from offering its premium nav services like Guide Michelin and Lonely Planet on these legacy S60 3.1 handsets, owners are nevertheless being treated to free walk and drive navigation with turn-by-turn guidance. So really, you can't complain... unless of course you picked up a US-flavored E71x which isn't eligible for the free update. Check the full press release after the break for download instructions and a list of compatible devices.

  • Nokia E71x now available from AT&T

It's been an awful long time in coming, but AT&T's customized remix of Nokia's lovely E71 -- the E71x -- is now available for sale direct from the carrier's site. As was revealed a little over a month ago, pricing comes in at just $99.99 on contract after rebate, which seems like a steal for a device with this level of capability and sex appeal. Of course, you'll need to be okay with S60 3.2 -- but if you can get past that, you've got a gorgeous all-metal shell, full QWERTY, HSDPA, 3.2 megapixel cam, and WiFi waiting for you. What now, Bold? [Thanks, Ivaylo]

  • Nokia E71x finally coming to AT&T on May 4?

We've been teased by the promise of the E71x for months now -- and of that time, we've been teased on a very official level for a solid three weeks -- but we've yet to get a solid release date out of AT&T. The popular rumor is that last-minute problems in the phone's custom FP2-based firmware (the original E71 runs FP1, you may recall) affecting email caused the holdup, and naturally, a mass firmware update on an endless sea of already-manufactured devices can be a bit of a production. Now, Nokia Experts is reporting that we'll finally see this thing hit shelves on May 4 and has a screenshot to back up the claim; at $99.99 on contract, it'll still be a steal by then, but we'd recommend they not wait any longer than that. Please, seriously.

We were never able to track down an E71x with a SIM and an active AT&T Navigator account, but it's pretty clear from our time with the device that AT&T has left its S60 3.2-based core pleasantly untouched. We wouldn't call it "virgin" by any stretch, but the profile can be tweaked to your liking, we weren't able to find any options that were notably absent, WiFi's still there, and you can file all of the unremovable AT&T crapware in a separate folder that you'll never use (and yes, we did verify that it can't be uninstalled, sadly). And let's not forget -- you're getting one of the sexiest smartphones ever made for a penny shy of a hundie, so really, what do ya got to complain about?

Our time with it was all too brief, but we had just a few moments to play with a SIM-less E71x last evening -- and yes, we're pretty sure this blacked-out beauty is going to sell like Canadian bananas when it launches on AT&T in the next few weeks, especially at that enticing $99.99 price point. Anyone who's handled an original E71 will know exactly what's going on here: slim, sexy, totally usable keypad, and WiFi. Too bad they weren't able to cram in a 3.5mm jack on the E71x to complement the addition of S60 3.2, but hey, we're just going to count our sub-hundred-dollar blessings and move on.

AT&T's done us all a favor by doing its own quick hands-on of three of its more hotly-anticipated devices in its just-announced spring lineup -- the Nokia E71x along with Samsung's Propel Pro and Impression -- and putting together a little video of the action. Our lovely host Seth (if that is, in fact, his real name) gets ushered to the rear of a corporate-owned store before opening where the new devices lie in wait, and while us lay folk won't be able to buy any of these for a few days, the dude's able to give us a quick video tour of each unit's finer points. Each of the three devices looks exactly as you'd expect it to, but notably, the Impression's AMOLED touchscreen really seems to shine (literally) with an insane viewing angle and an almost paper-like appearance; in fact, if he hadn't changed screens, we'd almost have thought he was playing with a dummy unit. Follow the break for the video (don't worry, the stuff's in the back).

Kicking off what's sure to be a fun-filled week of announcements surrounding CTIA out in Vegas, AT&T's smartphone lineup just got a little beefier thanks to the official introduction of a couple devices we've been expecting for a hot minute now. First up, the Nokia E71x is just about ready for shelves, bringing WiFi, AT&T Navigator (which hopefully won't preclude the use of Nokia Maps and other GPS-enabled apps), and all of the lauded physical design characteristics you're used to from the original, unbranded E71. The best thing here might be the price -- just $99.99 on contract after rebate, thankfully beating rumors of $200 and $150 by a country mile; it'll hit shelves "in the coming weeks." Next up is the Samsung Propel Pro, a device that shares very little in common with its Propel namesake other than a form factor, mainly because this sucker's a full-out smartphone running Windows Mobile 6.1. It's got WiFi, a slide-out full QWERTY keyboard (naturally) and will be available on April 14 for $149.99 after all your discounts have been applied and your two-year agreement is filed away.

  • Nokia E71x misses rumored launch date on AT&T

First we had a solid rumor that the long-awaited Nokia E71x would finally go on sale come March 24th, but that day -- yesterday -- sadly came and went without a single handset hitting shelves. The latest intel suggests that a last-minute bug discovered in the phone's email app was the monkey wrench that brought the whole Rube Goldberg machine of a launch process to its knees, and sadly, the thousands of units already produced are just going to sit around while they await a firmware update -- an update that's several weeks out, the story goes. Though the idea of a subsidized E71 that carries over most of the original's openness and throws in a dose of S60 3.2 for good measure is an enticing idea indeed, the unlocked models have been around since July of last year, so the scary question becomes: will this product still relevant by the time AT&T finally manages to get it out the door?

  • AT&T pushing back Nokia E71x launch?

Word is that a last-minute bug discovered in the hotly-anticipated Nokia E71x's firmware involving email -- which, let's be honest, is one of the top two or three reasons to own a device with this form factor -- has pushed back the launch by several weeks while all the parties involved scramble to cook up a fix. That sucks, considering the E71 has been out in North American flavor since last July and we've been hearing about the existence of AT&T's oh-so-special version even longer than that, so a delay is just about the last thing Symbian faithful around here were hoping to hear. The good news is that the delay might be accompanied by a price break, apparently, bringing the device down to $149.99 on contract after rebate at launch. This whole sitch is still in the rumor phase, but look, AT&T, we're going to hold you to it anyway -- The People want this for under two bills.

Looks like the Nokia E71x is finally about to make its long-awaited entrance on AT&T -- Boy Genius says handsets are starting to show up at stores nationwide. If all goes according to plan, this slice of subsidized style will set you back $199 on contract when it launches on March 24 -- a price that sort of makes us wish we'd sprung for that one-day-only $289 unlocked unit on Amazon. Come on, AT&T, at least hit us with that super hot white version, will you?

After a long, long wait, the Nokia E71x (which looks to be the official name, not just E71) finally looks poised to bow any week now, and we've just landed a few more shots of the sucker as it rounds third base. Our tipster confirms that WiFi has been left untouched alongside HSDPA -- thank goodness -- and the phone's S60 build has been left "relatively untouched" by AT&T. Pricing is looking to fall somewhere between $150 and $200 after rebate. Personally, we'd love to see it run $99, but maybe we're dreaming. [Thanks, Chris]

We've stumbled across a... ahem, major national retailer's stock sheet for the next few weeks, and things are looking up -- particularly on AT&T, where we'll have a couple of long-awaited releases. Let's start with the unknown, though: there's a "Jackfrost" due at the end of the month, and without even a manufacturer listed, it's impossible to know what this thing could possibly be. More importantly, though, the long-rumored LG Zenon (which spikes the less-trademarkable "Xenon" spelling we'd seen before) is slated for mid-April, and the even longer-rumored E71x -- which may simply be known as the E71 by the time it launches -- should drop by at the beginning of next month. Moving over to Big Red, that Nokia 7205 Intrigue that's been kicking around in spy shots since the early part of '08 might finally launch in just a few days' time. All told, we have a lot of emotional closure around the corner with these launches, don't we? [Thanks, anonymous tipster]

Certainly seems that this thing is actually going to happen -- much to the delight of jaded E62 users looking for some kind of relief. The well-scooped E71x has just gotten its user's manual upped to Nokia USA's site, showing off the QWERTY beast in all its tweaked, branded glory. Not as useful as... oh, you know, actually having one in our hands, but at least we can read up on the proper use of AT&T Navigator and MEdia Mall while we wait for some kind of launch.[Via Boy Genius Report]

Remember that black AT&T branded E71x we saw some time back? Well, it came and went in an eBay auction yesterday -- yeah, we're kinda bummed we missed it, too -- with some lucky soul getting the win for a cool $370. The rumor mill seems to have stopped turning on this one, but we're really hoping to hear something new soon because the itch is just about killing us.[Via Symbian-Guru]

  • Nokia E71 finally coming to AT&T as E71x

We've been hearing for ages that there was a super-special version of the E71 with an AT&T ROM floating around somewhere in Nokia's skunkworks, but solid evidence of its existence has been scarce to say the least; some said it was canceled, some said it was just taking its sweet time going through the testing process, and some put a hand over our mouth and told us never to speak "AT&T" and "E71" in the same sentence again lest an agent overhear us. New in-the-wild shots give us -- and the North American S60-loving public -- newfound hope that the phone's gonna actually happen, but it'll emerge as the "E71x." That's a new suffix for Nokia, so we really have no idea what it might mean -- more internal memory would be cool, but we're not really counting on it. Word is that it'll be available for something in the $150 range when it finally hits, so if the 6650 isn't your cup o' tea, hang tight. (And by the way, guys, we're totally digging the black.)
