The 75th Emmy Awards ceremony has been rescheduled to January 15th, a delay of four months. The original plan was to broadcast the ceremony in September, but given the ongoing writers and actors strikes, that isn't feasible.

The Primetime Emmys won’t take place on September 18th, according to Variety. The publication reported on Thursday that vendors scheduled to work the event have been told the ceremony is delayed because of the writers’ and actors’ strikes that have shut down all Hollywood productions and promotions. The TV Academy hasn’t yet announced a replacement date, but Variety previously reported that broadcast partner Fox tentatively wants to shoot for January 2024. HBO’s Succession leads this year’s field with 27 nominations, while The Last of Us made history with an impressive 24 nods for the video game adaptation.

The 2019 Emmy awards were a highlight run of "TV" shows that you can watch delivered over the internet, with streaming favorites like Amazon Prime's Fleabag and Netflix's Ozark bringing home multiple awards during the broadcast. Netflix's interactive Black Mirror episode Bandersnatch only won one trophy tonight, but it marked the format's arrival when it was awarded Outstanding Television Movie over challengers like Deadwood and King Lear.

The show with the second-highest tally of nominations is Amazon Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 20. It won several awards last year, including the top Outstanding Comedy Series prize. It's nominated again in that category.

Amid a wave of announcements Monday, Hulu revealed The Handmaid's Tale will return on June 5th. As such, it will won't compete at this year's Emmys. It lost out to Game of Thrones the last time the shows went head to head, and the final season of HBO's show starts in April (though Hulu said moving the premiere from its typical early spring slot to June wasn't specifically about Emmy competition).

The 2018 Emmys were a watershed moment for streaming TV

"The goal is to become HBO before HBO can become us." That's what Netflix's Ted Sarandos told GQ back in 2013, and it subsequently became a corporate mantra. Back then, it was hard to see how this upstart could supplant the bluest chip in TV's firmament. It had money, sure, but nobody could have expected it to execute the change from being a DVD rental business to a ubiquitous TV platform. Just five years after launching its first original, House of Cards, Netflix has won.

Just a few years ago it was still novel to see Emmy winners coming from internet services instead of cable or network TV, but now it's just a part of the landscape. Netflix notably edged out HBO this year when it came to nominations, but now that all the trophies have been handed out they ended up tied with 23 wins each.

After passing 100 million subscribers, overtaking cable TV in customer numbers in the US and expanding to over 190 countries, Netflix is starting to cement something else: sustained prestige. A record haul of 91 Emmy nominations puts Netflix -- which had 54 nominations last year -- just behind perennial frontrunner HBO with 110, thanks to hits like Master of None and Stranger Things. In May, the company screened movies including Bong Joon-ho's Okja at the Cannes Film Festival. It was the first time streaming services have been recognized at the iconic event (though not without controversy).

The USA series Mr. Robot has more than just surprisingly realistic hacking scenes, as it now can claim an Emmy win. Series star Rami Malek snagged the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award tonight, beating out Kevin Spacey, Bob Odenkirk and others. After double checking to make sure we were all seeing this too (good call), Malek said he wanted to "honor the Elliots...because there's a little bit of Elliot in all of us." The show's season finale airs Wednesday night, and if the breakdown of its hacking scenes hasn't turned you into a fan yet, take a look at our interviews with show creator Sam Esmail.

Virtual reality is an art form that's still in its early stages. Headsets, like the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, were only released this year, and people still need to be convinced that VR can be a powerful new way to tell and experience movies, TV shows, and video games. In what could be a tipping point for the VR industry, Facebook-owned Oculus won its first Emmy for Outstanding Original Interactive Program for its animated VR short film, Henry.
