Windows Phone launches in China today (updated)
Microsoft China has finally christened its first Windows Phone. The HTC Triumph (or Titan, or even Eternity, according to the official Windows Phone Blog) is out, brandishing a 4.7-inch display and double camera setup. The phone arrives unlocked and apparently loaded up with "a slew" of popular native apps. We'll be taking a look at those once we've got our hands on this regional variant. We've included a few screengrabs of the Chinese language UI after the break.Update: Looks like something got lost in translation with Microsoft's official blog -- the Triumph isn't yet on sale. Expect to see it on Chinese store shelves on March 28th.
HTC pushes a Windows Phone through FCC, Mango launch close at hand?
Phones approved by the FCC are seldom so upfront about the OS they run on, but HTC decided to go against the status quo in its latest filing to the government agency. A quick perusal of the FCC filings show a handset tested for 850 / 1900 GSM -- standard 2G bands for AT&T and T-Mobile -- and no WCDMA frequencies in the US. There's one detail in the docs, however, that stands out like a sore thumb: this device, the HTC PI39110, is listed as a Windows Phone. What's more, the paperwork also mentions the inclusion of a "WiFi hotspot," which likely is the mobile hotspot feature confirmed to be supported by Mango. HTC hasn't announced any devices that run on the updated OS yet, but this particular gem could very well be the long-rumored Eternity. While it probably won't make its way to the US, this is at least a solid indicator that Windows Phone 7.5 is coming soon to more parts of the globe.
HTC Eternity leaked: 1.5GHz processor, 4.7-inch display, front-facing camera
As the world runs short on snarky phone titles (and in fact, starts using a couple of the gems on more than one occasion), we're left to overlook the moniker here while focusing on what's important: that display. In fact, the 4.7-inch WVGA Super LCD shown here actually does seem to extend on for Eternity, and if HTC Inside's leak pans out, we could be looking at the world's next WP7 superphone. It's bruited that this fellow will be shipping with a single-core 1.5GHz processor, 8 megapixel camera (autofocus, dual LED flash), a 720p movie mode, front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, 16GB of storage, DLNA support, Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS and a 1,650mAh battery. That's a pretty startling list of features, and savvy Windows Phone followers will recognize that the Mango update will indeed be necessary before that front-facing shooter becomes useful. Needless to say, we'll be keeping an ear to the ground for more, as essentials like price and release have thus far eluded us.
Samsung Eternity retrofitted within NES controller, has never looked better
Not that we've never had the pleasure of seeing an NES phone mod before, but there's just something especially elegant about this one. The not-at-all-ancient Samsung a867 Eternity was chosen by one Taylor Merrill to be shoved inside of a now-defunct Nintendo Entertainment System controller. The result, naturally, is what you see above -- er, half of it, anyway. For a look at the whole thing in its entirety, hop on past the break and mash play. AT&T starts to hawk Samsung Eternity online
If there's some pressing matter that's preventing you from making it out to an AT&T store, there's a plan B you might want to investigate now that the carrier's website has started offering the Samsung Eternity for sale. It'll run you the same $149.99 on contract after rebate that it's going for in-store -- or $379.99 commitment-free if your life is too awesome and chaotic to sign it away for two years. Samsung a867 Eternity now in AT&T stores, ready to take you to the great beyond
The TouchWiz onslaught is now officially in full force, with Samsung's SGH-a867 Eternity now starting to find its way into AT&T stores across the lands to match its Behold and Delve cousins. It's running $149.99 on contract after rebate, bringing MediaFLO, a full-face touchscreen, HSDPA, 3-megapixel cam, AT&T Navigator, and pretty much everything else you could hope for out of a high-end non-smartphone, so if the 6650 isn't pushing your buttons (nor the Vu), maybe this'll do something for ya.
AT&T taking Samsung a867 Eternity orders from stores, should be available this week
We're hearing that the MediaFLO-packing, TouchWiz-having, HSDPA-sporting Samsung Eternity is now available for order by AT&T stores, and when this happens, phones are typically available for purchase at the counter within a few days. It'll be an interesting alternative to the Vu -- and for AT&T customers looking longingly toward the Behold, this might just be the ticket to staying put.[Thanks, Kal, image via phoneArena]
Samsung's winter lineup for the US gets dolled up for the camera
We know about most of these handsets, but it's always fun to get a few final views before they're officially announced and made available, isn't it? phoneArena has what must be the complete (or close to it) lineup from Samsung for the US market in the next few months all in one place, showing the a777 and a867 Eternity for AT&T, the Behold for T-Mobile, and the i770 Saga, i910 Omnia, and u810 Reknown for Verizon. New here is the R600 Hue II for Alltel, a boring-ass little flip that should be available in a handful of colors. There are a couple goodies in here -- the a867, i770, and i910 should all get some blood flowing, depending on how you roll. Which one's your favorite?
User manual images show off AT&T's Samsung Eternity
As you very well know, we're within that all-important launch window for AT&T's Samsung Eternity, and we've got this strange, inexplicable feeling the release date will be sooner rather than later. Why? We're glad you asked! Because a plethora of user guide shots have already leaked, practically confirming what the handset looks like as well as its basic specifications. Speaking of, we're seeing quad-band GSM / dual-band HSDPA support, a 3-megapixel camera, GPS with AT&T Navigator, Media FLO, Bluetooth 2.0, a microSD expansion slot, Widgets and a Mobile TV player. AT&T prices Samsung Eternity at $99.99 on contract?
We know with near certainty that the a867 Eternity will be one of those TouchWiz-enabled phones Samsung decided to chat up yesterday, and now, we think we have a price. We're hearing that AT&T has the a867 pegged at $99.99 on contract after mail-in rebate -- or so says an internal price sheet, anyway, with a valid window of November 2 to December 25. In other words, we're liking our chances of seeing this thing before the year's out for a hundie out of pocket. Feeling any heat up there, iPhone? Samsung a867 "Eternity" for AT&T in the wild!
Samsung's definitely up to some serious strategery for a fall / winter assault on AT&T, starting with that funky a637 that just launched and continuing on through high-drama rumors of Omnias, BlackJack IIIs, and pretty much everything in between. We're starting to get some solid intel on the a867, anyway, which we're told will be branded as the "Eternity" (though that name is still subject to change -- they seem to waffle on that every few minutes) when it launches next month for something in the range of $150 on contract. It looks like an Omnia, but the similarities end there; it's actually got closer ties to the F480 since it drops WinMo in favor of Sammy's proprietary setup. Look for this one to be a head-to-head Vu competitor, thanks to MediaFLO support (no external antenna needed!), a 3.2-inch touchscreen, and an integrated 3-megapixel cam. It also does AGPS, includes an all-important 3.5mm headphone jack, and can swallow those new 16GB microSD cards, making it a decent media player all around (in theory, anyhow). It's also said to have a "light pipe" at the bottom -- basically a fancy status light that can be configured to show colors for new emails, text messages, and so on.
