A southern New Jersey town of 45,000 is testing out a new kind of ride-hailing program, this one targeted at people who've had a bit too much to drink. Uber has partnered with New Jersey's Evesham Township to provide free rides to people who are too inebriated to drive themselves home, Reuters reports. The service is available to patrons in at least 19 bars and restaurants in the area. Another free-ride service, BeMyDD, also went live in Evesham on Friday, and both programs are funded via donations from local nonprofits and businesses.

It's just been a few months since Evesham introduced the Zieo N6 series, but it's already revving the top of the line -- say hello to the NX600-HDX, which is just the second laptop we've seen to feature the X7900 Core 2 Extreme processor. Apart from that 2.8GHz C2E chip, a bump to 4GB of RAM, and Vista Ultimate, the HDX is pretty much the same as the other N6 machines: 17-inch screen, 512MB NVIDIA 8700M GT graphics, 200GB disk, and a 2-hour battery life. Of course, 8.9 pounds of power is going to cost you -- Evesham is listing the HDX at a staggering £1899 ($3884).[Via Stuff]

Shortly after unveiling the Zieo N500-HD, Evesham is hitting back with a slightly more updated version for those lusting after a few more frames-per-second. The 17-inch Zieo NX600-HD looks to be aimed squarely at gamers, as the available 2.4GHz T7700 Core 2 Duo and 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8700M GT provide all the FPS horsepower you'll (currently) need. Also packed within is a WUXGA panel, 2GB of DDR2 RAM, dual-layer DVD burner, a 56k modem, up to 250GB of SATA hard drive space, eight-cell Li-ion battery, 802.11a/b/g/n support, integrated multicard reader, built-in stereo speakers, gigabit Ethernet, and a smattering of ports including FireWire, USB 2.0, DVI, TV out, and an ExpressCard slot for good measure. Of course, such a well endowed machine won't come cheap (nor lightly), as this 8.7-pound beast will run you £1,399 ($2,813) before any of the highly desirable upgrades.[Via TechDigest]

Evesham looks to be slowly expanding its line-up of Santa Rosa-based laptops, following up the pair of no-frills models released earlier this month with the higher-end Zieo N500-HD model. This one's aimed squarely at those in the market for a desktop replacement, boasting a 17-inch display (1680x1050), a 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo T7500 processor, Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT graphics, a 160GB hard drive, 2GB of RAM, an Intel Turbo Memory cache card, a built-in TV tuner card, 802.11n WiFi, an ExpressCard slot, and an HDMI port, among other features. As you might expect, all that comes with the slight downside of a hefty carrying weight (nearly eight pounds), but if you don't mind the workout, you can grab one now for for about $2,180.[Via PC Launches]

  • Evesham intros C515SR and C535S Santa Rosa-based laptops

Proving that the Santa Rosa craziness extends across the pond, U.K.-based manufacturer Evesham has introduced the first of its laptops based on the platform, rolling out the C515SR and C535SR today. The slightly lower-end of the two, the C515SR packs a 15.4-inch WXGA display, along with a T7100 Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, built-in 802.11a/g/n WiFi, and a dual layer DVD-RW drive. Taking things up a notch, the C535SR packs the same display but upgrades the processor to a T7500, adds NVIDIA 8600 graphics (as opposed to the standard Intel business on the C515SR), ups the RAM to 2GB, and increases the hard drive to 120GB. Both can also be customized further to suit your liking. Those in the U.K. can snap up either one of 'em now, with the C515SR starting at £699 ($1,380) and the C535SR coming in at £849 ($1680) for the base configuration.[Via Tech Digest]

  • Stand out with Evesham's speakerful TV stand

Why settle for the measly two speakers built into that LED 120hz LCD when you can grab the new Evesham TV stand with nine? The Sound Stage X1 jump starts your surround sound with a subwoofer, two center-channel speakers, four front speakers, and finishes off with two more for the rear surrounds. The speaker orientation uses the acoustic properties of the room to bounce sound off of the rear and side walls, so it works best in a square-shaped room, but it should be a good alternative to stringing wires under the carpet or through the attic. The stand will match many of the new piano-black reflective finishes in today's flat-panel screens, and retails for £300. Now if we could just get them to do something about the TV stand with built-in drink holders...

UK firm Evesham has released the iplayer high-definition media center for £299 (584 USD), which can tune in over the air HD signals as well as download podcasts, IPTV, and pay-per-view Top Up content from the internet. The 80GB hard drive provides PVR functionality with recording and playback for timeshifting your media, and Media Player Connect for streaming to any PCs on the network. It also upscales any standard-def content up to 1080i using the built-in HDMI port. The iplayer includes the usual audio and video media viewers, as well as an email client and web browser which you can use via the included remote or a USB keyboard. The Inquirer thinks that it's a capable alternative to Sky for viewing both Freeview TV and media online and offline, at just a bit of a price premium.[Via The Inquirer]

  • Evesham unveils budget lineup of Alqemi LCD HDTVs

While Evesham's 47-inch LCD TV may have a long list of niceties that would surely bring a smile to any HD addict's face, the rather hefty pricetag might just scare a few folks away. Apparently making sure that its got the low and mid-range customers covered as well, Evesham is busting out a bevy of new displays at much lower price points. The Alqemi lineups boasts 32-, 37-, and 42-inch panels, with all five sporting WXGA resolutions, 8-millisecond response time, 500 cd/m2 brightness, 1000:1 contrast ratio (save for the bottom-end's curiously high 1200:1 spec), and integrated stereo speakers. Evesham further segregates the models by offering a low-end 32-inch version (peep a pic after the jump) with the bare necessities (HDMI, component / S-Video / composite, VGA, and an analog tuner) for £499 ($970), while offering mid-range units with DVB-T / analog hybrid tuners (with Digital Tick support), and a 42-inch flagship (Alqemi SX; pictured after the break) that boasts PIP and Virtual Dolby surround sound. Evesham's budget lineup tops at £1,399 ($2,718), with the mid-range units ranging from £599 ($1,164) to £899 ($1,747), and can be picked up now on the other side of the pond.Read - Evesham 32-inch Alqemi LCD TVRead - Evesham 32-inch Alqemi SX LCD TVRead - Evesham 37-inch Alqemi S LCD TVRead - Evesham 37-inch Alqemi SX LCD TVRead - Evesham 42-inch Alqemi SX LCD TV

  • Evesham Light Book claims "world's lightest" with optical drive

    by

We've seen some pretty dang ultralight laptops in our day, so we're a bit skeptical at Evesham's claim that its 1.4-inch thick 2.65 pound "Light Book" is the lightest ever to include an optical drive -- but 2.65 pounds is pretty dang light all the same. Along with that snazzy DVD/CD-RW/DVD-RW drive they somehow squeezed in, Evesham also included a 12.1-inch XGA display, Intel Core Solo low-voltage processor, Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics, 512MB of RAM, a 60GB HDD and a 4-in-1 card reader -- along with the standard complement of WiFi and a fingerprint reader. Despite all this, Evesham is still claiming five hours of battery life, with an option for a ten hour battery, and pricing it all at a semi-reasonable £999 ($1,910 US). The laptop could be getting some heated competition from the similarly minuscule Toughbook series, but it looks like the Light Book will put up a pretty good fight.

Evesham -- best known for its fleshed-out lineup of notebooks -- is delving into the TV realm by dropping a bit (47 inches, to be exact) of 1080p love to the blokes across the pond. Sporting an ultrathin 5.43-inch enclosure, the plainly-named 47INCHLCD sports a 16:9 aspect ratio, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, 1600:1 contrast ratio, 550 cd/m2 brightness, 8-millisecond response time, and a built-in analog / Freeview (DVB-T) hybrid tuner. The panel also touts a pair of 10-watt stereo speakers along with a bevy of inputs, including VGA, HDMI, component, S-Video, and audio in / out. Those lucky enough to live in the good ole UK can pick up the 47INCHLCD right now for £1,899 ($3,592). [Via Pocket-Lint]

  • AOpen opens the door to Core 2 Duo miniPCs

AOpen, creator of the Mac mini-mimicking miniPC, is the latest PC manufacturer to announce that it'll be using Intel's notebook version of the Core 2 Duo processor, this time in its ultra small form factor PCs. From now on, the company's MP945-X, -VX, and -VXR PCs, along with a range of Series i975 and i945 motherboards, will all support Core 2 Duo. If you bought one of these products before this announcement and fancy getting in on the Core 2 Duo action, then all you need to do to add support is grab a new BIOS and set of drivers from the official site. UK-based miniPC reseller Evesham has already offered up some shots of a Core 2 Duo T7200 (2GHz, 4MB cache) and Windows MCE '05-equipped model which also has a built-in digital TV tuner, 1GB of RAM, a 100GB 2.5-inch hard drive, along with a bundled remote control. Finally, the DVI port at the back runs off an integrated graphics chip, which isn't much of a surprise considering the machine's diminutive 50 x 165 x 165mm dimensions, although the £799 incl. VAT price tag doesn't make us feel any better about it.[Via TrustedReviews]

  • Evesham releases SLI-enabled Quest Nemesis notebook

    06.21.2006

If Evesham's 19-inch Quest A630 gaming rig was just a little too much laptop for you, now the company has introduced another dual-core model that maintains the A630's SLI goodness but drops two inches off the screen -- and a full $1,300 off the pricetag. The new 17-inch Quest Nemesis features a Turion 64 processor from AMD, dual nVidia GeForce Go 7900 video cards, 1,680 x 1,050 WSXGA resolution, 160GB worth of 5400RPM SATA drives, and 1GB of rather pokey 333MHz DDR RAM, along with a DVD burner, 3-in-1 card reader, and Bluetooth and 802.11g radios. There's also a full suite of connectivity options, including FireWire, DVI, VGA, S-Video, S/PDIF, and 4 USB 2.0 ports, as well as an ExpressCard slot for eventually adding a wireless 3G modem. You can order the 8.8-pound Nemesis right away starting at $2,775, or wait around for the inevitable flood of identical rebadges that will probably drive the price down a bit.[Via Pocket-Lint]

  • Evesham's budget-priced 20.1-inch HD-ready LCD TV

    06.02.2006

UK-based Evesham has released an HD-ready LCD TV at a budget price -- well, budget as far as LCD TVs go. The 20.1-inch V20KCDX-E03 LCD TV lists for £349.99 (about $650US) and features a 140 degree viewing angle, 300cd/m2 brightness, a contrast ratio of "up to" 600:1, and a respectable 8ms response time. Unfortunately, it's not the highest of high-defintion, with a resolution of 1680 x 1050, and it doesn't have HDMI, but it does have DVI, two SCART sockets, S-video, component, and composite video inputs. So if you were just thinking of using this as a monitor, it looks like you can save some money going for Dell's 2007WFP (or the older 2005FPW if you're scared of color banding issues).

Our favorite UK laptop rebadger is back with a new 12.1-inch member of their Quest series, called the A230, that offers dual-core technology for around $1,500. Featuring AMD's Turion 64 X2 processor, Evesham's A230 also comes with 1GB of RAM under the hood, integrated two-flavor WiFi, a built-in ExpressCard slot, and almost certainly, integrated graphics. British shoppers looking for an ultraportable around 4-pounds (that refers to the weight, not the price, wiseguy) can pick up their very own A230 immediately.[Via Core Duo Info]
