International money transfer service Travelex held ransom by hackers
Foreign exchange company Travelex has been targeted by hackers demanding $6 million (£4.6 million), in an attack many believe could have been averted months ago. The ransomware gang known as Sodinokibi -- also as REvil -- says it has downloaded more than 5GB of sensitive customer data, including dates of birth, credit card information and national insurance numbers, which it will publish if payment is not made within a week. The hackers originally demanded $3 million, but doubled the sum after two days of non-payment.
Hackers stole $40 million from a major Bitcoin exchange
Binance, one of the world's largest cryptocurrency exchanges, announced that it lost $40 million (7,000 Bitcoins) in a "large scale security breach." The company said that hackers accessed a hot wallet that contained about two percent of its total BTC holdings. They used phishing and viruses to obtain user data and managed to bypass security checks, preventing Binance from blocking the transaction. The company said that "no user funds will be affected," as has an emergency fund that will cover the incident "in full."

QuadrigaCX was one of Canada's largest Bitcoin exchanges, controlling assets believed to be worth around $200 million CAD. Unfortunately, Gerald Cotten, its co-founder and CEO, passed away in December 2018. Cotten was the only one who could access the company funds, leaving it unable to pay its creditors.
South Korea will regulate, not ban, cryptocurrency trading
South Korea has no plans to ban cryptocurrency trading, according to government authorities. The announcement follows reports earlier this month that the country was considering shutting down trading because of tax evasion, which led to massive disruption on trading platforms around the world. However, the government does plan to tighten regulation and crack down on illegal practices within the area.

Cheddar is the new home of crowd-controlled StockStream
Watching other people play video games is a big business. At any time, you can hop on Twitch and see gamers take on Demon's Souls, Pokemon, and even Sudoku. It's not all video games, either, with Let's Robot and Instapainting exploring internet-controlled robots. Last May, software developer Mike Roberts created StockStream, a Twitch channel that encourages viewers to vote on which stocks to buy or sell using Roberts' own $50,000 stock portfolio. Now, Roberts and his trading game have been acquired by Cheddar, the "millennial business news" network that broadcasts from the New York Stock Exchange. StockStream will continue, though its balance will double and the portfolio extended to " commodities, industry portfolios, indexes, and other asset classes," according to a Cheddar blog post.
Samsung offers Note 7 owners $100 off another Galaxy phone
In an attempt to keep users, Samsung is issuing a $100 credit to exchange the defective Galaxy Note 7 for a Galaxy S7 Edge or other Samsung device. By comparison, it'll give you just $25 if you switch to Apple, HTC or any other brand. It has also expanded the recall to include all Galaxy Note 7 devices, including those issued as replacements for the original defective phones. That move was expected, since both have proved to have defective batteries that can cause fires and explosions.
Microsoft and Mercedes bring your office calendar to your car
You can't always escape work when you're in your car, but Microsoft and Mercedes-Benz think they can at least make those corporate invasions more tolerable. They're working together on an In Car Office project that, to start with, will integrate your Microsoft Exchange info with your car's infotainment system. It'll auto-populate your car's navigation unit with driving directions for that upcoming meeting, for example, or offer to make a hands-free call to get in touch with your client when you're on your way.
Gmail on Android is ready for your Exchange account
Gmail threw the doors open when it added support for non-Google email accounts, but there was one glaring omission: you couldn't get Microsoft Exchange support on all devices. Not consistently, anyway. What if you want to get your work email without turning to another app? Relax. Google is trotting out an update to Gmail for Android that supports Exchange on all devices, so your corporate reports can live in the same app as your personal messages. The update isn't available for everyone right away, so be patient if you're eager to move your correspondence.
Microsoft Outlook now available for iOS
Just in time for TUAW parent company Aol to migrate all of its employees from Microsoft Outlook to Gmail this weekend, Microsoft today launched Outlook for iOS (free). The universal app is essentially a scaled-down version of the desktop Outlook application, providing compatibility with Exchange servers, Outlook.com and Office 365 services. If you have other mail accounts, such as iCloud, Gmail and Yahoo Mail, you'll be happy to know that the Outlook app also supports those services. Of course, Outlook has always been more than just email. The app makes it simple to view or organize the email inbox, check and update calendars, handle attachments, and more -- all in one app. The Outlook app is an outcome of December's acquisition of email startup Accompli, which had previously created email apps for iOS and Android. Microsoft has been aggressively developing mobile versions of its flagship applications for the two popular mobile platforms, with the Office suite making it to iOS last March followed by updates to add printing and third-party font support. Bitcoin's first licensed US exchange opens with approval from 25 states
Virtual currency bitcoin is starting to get its act together. A startup funded with $106 million from the New York Stock Exchange as well as banks and venture capital firms, is set to launch the first licensed US bitcoin exchange. Coinbase reckons it'll add increased security to traders as well as monitor real-time pricing of the world's foremost cryptocurrency. If you've forgotten, unlike normal currencies, bitcoin is traded virtually and isn't backed by a central government: reasons why the currency often fluctuates severely. The collapse of Mt. Gox last year stung investors, both professional and otherwise, for a total sum of around half a billion dollars. As the WSJ notes, the value of a bitcoin is currently around $240: it was stood at $1,200 per 'coin.
Gmail for Android is ready to handle all your email accounts
The new version of Gmail for Android is slated to make its way to Google Play in the near future, but if you cannot wait to use it, you can download the APK right now and load it up. You'll notice some major changes the moment you launch it, since it'll ask what kind of email addresses you'd like to add: version 5 works not only with Gmail addresses, but also with Outlook, Yahoo and any IMAP- or POP-based email accounts. To choose the inbox you want to check, simply tap one of your accounts on the left-hand menu. Also, it comes with a Material Design interface makeover (there's a lot more red now) and a thread email system similar to what you get through Inbox. We can't say which Android flavors it's compatible with exactly, but we've installed it on an Ice Cream Sandwich tablet, so it'll likely work with all newer platforms. Outlook Web App finally debuts on Android, but only for 'small' devices
Been looking forward to a native Outlook Web App for your Android device? You just might have to wait a little longer: the freshly launched OWA Android app is only available on 'select devices.' Microsoft says this pre-release version can do everything its iOS counterpart can and automatically update its address book whenever the user makes a chance to their device contacts, but it's not ready for a full roll-out. Still, if you're sporting a device with Android 4.4 KitKat and Google's OS standards categorize your phone as "small" or "normal," the app's inaugural releases is yours for the taking.
