Deals with Gold isn't fooling around, as five Xbox One games and eight Xbox 360 games are discounted this week. Of the bunch, one game is on sale for both Xbox Live Gold and Silver members, as all Xbox One players can download EA Sports UFC for half-off. The other four Xbox One games on sale for Gold subscribers are Stick it to the Man, KickBeat Special Edition, Divekick and CastleStorm's Definitive Edition, each for 30 percent off their respective prices. As for Xbox 360 players with an Xbox Live paid subscription, both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are 67 percent off this week through Games on Demand as well as Catherine, which is 60 percent off. Serious Sam Double D XXL and Serious Sam 3: BFE as well as the latter's Jewel of the Nile DLC are 67 percent off on XBLA. Rounding out the group is Foul Play, Pool Nation and How to Survive, each discounted by, you guessed it, 67 percent. The deals are good through Monday, November 17. [Image: EA Sports]

While most Americans are doing their patriotic duty on Independence Day, setting off small explosions and slathering meat stuffs in copious gobs of ketchup, speedrunner BubblesDelFuego is celebrating his liberation of Fallout 3's speedrunning record. Bubbles was gunning for the world record at the end of June, but found his sub-24 minute run beaten by Ranarith just a few hours after posting his time. Not one to be deterred, Bubbles set a new record of 23:11 on Tuesday, beating Ranarith by just two seconds. Crack a Nuka-Cola, Bubbles, and enjoy the fireworks.

A fully functional Pip-Boy 3000 has emerged from the vault of Team Reno, a five-member group of people way, way smarter than us. The device can display relative humidity, altitude, latitude and longitude, atmospheric pressure, ambient temperature, object temperature and of course, radiation levels. It was created as part of NASA's SpaceApps Challenge, which asked designers to create wearable technology for future space travelers. "We wanted to make a piece of popular science fiction into a reality so we chose the Pip-Boy 3000 from the game Fallout 3," the team wrote regarding their entry. "The goal was to bring environmental sensors into an easy-to-use cuff device that could help a wearer determine if their environment is safe for navigation or helmet removal." Team Reno consists of Colin Loretz, Ashley Hennefer, Andrew Warren, Christopher Baker and Ben Hammel. Remember those names, for when the Great War nukes us into oblivion, they'll be the ones you'll want to search out for gear to survive the wasteland. [Image: Team Reno]

  • Fallout 3 removing Games for Windows Live support, DRM on Steam [Update: Bethesda responds]

A recently-released patch for the Steam version of Bethesda's post-apocalyptic RPG Fallout 3 suggests that its Games for Windows Live support and DRM is being removed, likely in response to the service's decline and marketplace closure. NeoGAF reports that the update removes Fallout 3's SupportsCDKeyCopyToClipboard, ShowCDKeyOnLaunch, and legacy key registry functions -- all key components of Games for Windows Live integration. Blue's News finds that the game still installs the Games for Windows Live client upon launch, however. Uninstalling the client currently renders Fallout 3 inoperable. Several games have ditched Games for Windows Live support in recent months, including BioShock 2, Batman: Arkham City, and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2. Several Microsoft-published PC releases and high-profile games like Dark Souls and Grand Theft Auto 4 still require Games for Windows Live to function. [Update: A Bethesda spokesperson has contacted Joystiq with clarification regarding the recent update. "We have not removed GFWL from the game," the spokesperson stated. "The only that that has changed is that Steam has removed the need to activate the GFWL codes when purchasing the game."]

  • Assassin's Creed 4, more heavily discounted in Ubisoft's holiday sale

Ubisoft is currently hosting a massive sale, including half-priced versions of Assassin's Creed 4, and Far Cry 3 at 75 percent off. The caveats attached to these deals are all time-based and surprisingly complicated. For instance, that Assassin's Creed 4 discount is only available to UK PlayStation 3 owners on the PlayStation Network and draws to a close on December 21. The Far Cry 3 deal however, which can be found on Ubisoft's online store, runs until January 5 and includes a swath of other games such as Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and even a few discounts on non-Ubisoft games like Fallout 3. A cursory glance at the Ubisoft store shows The Walking Dead's PC incarnation at $6.25 and the Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition at a mere $5. If sorting through the reams of discounts seems like too much work, here's a trick that might help: While you can find all of Ubisoft's discounts by navigating its site, those who visit the Winter Sale page are able to pull up lists of games based on the size of their discounts. Edit: The text of this article has been altered to clarify the terms of the Assassin's Creed 4 discount.

  • After Reset may be the Fallout 3 we never got

Before Bethesda acquired the rights to the Fallout universe, there was another Fallout 3 in development. We'll almost certainly never see that game completed, but with any luck a new Kickstarter project can take its place. In development at Black Cloud Studios, After Reset is a post-apocalyptic roleplaying game that, while far from finished, already looks much like the first two Fallout games. Scant gameplay is shown in the footage above, but Black Cloud claims the game will feature a massive global map players are free to explore, so long as they have the water to do so. In their wanderings, players will encounter various tribes, raiders and slave traders - the kind of human detritus you'd expect to find in either a Mad Max film or Fallout game. From a gameplay perspective, After Reset is said to feature a core story centering on your characters, stories focused on each of the game's playable companions and, most crucially, a non-linear narrative that hinges mainly on player choice. The core rule set is a blend of Fallout's "SPECIAL" system and Dungeons & Dragons 3.5, a design decision that Black Cloud believes will make the game instantly intuitive to anyone who has played the earlier Fallouts, Baldur's Gate or Neverwinter Nights. Currently, After Reset has raised $18,065 of its $900,000 goal, with 26 days remaining. Assuming After Reset reaches its goal and makes its way to retail, it will be available on PC, Mac and Linux.

Bethesda has revamped its pricing structure for a whole mess of games across Steam, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and Xbox Live Games on Demand, permanently reducing the cost of Skyrim, Dishonored, Fallout 3 (and derivatives) and others. The full list of affected games, as well as their new price points, can be found after the break. In related news, our Skyrim wife left us this morning. She said she couldn't stand how cheap we are, which in hindsight is pretty ironic. Thanks for rubbing salt in the wound, Bethesda.

GamersGate is hosting a big sale on Bethesda titles this weekend, featuring games from the last few years of the company's history on sale for a fraction of the usual price. Dishonored, for example, is available for a low $14.99, or you can get Skyrim for $14.95, Rage for $9.95, or Fallout: New Vegas' Ultimate Edition for $9.95. Brink, Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Morrowind are all listed at bargain prices as well. A few of the titles have dropped out of stock already, which means that GamersGate has run out of digital keys for them. But as long as the title is still available for purchase, you can buy it, and then GamersGate will deliver a key when more are available. The deals last through the weekend, so now's your chance to fill out that Bethesda back catalog you've been missing.

In a touching tribute to Fallout 3 concept artist Adam Adamowicz who fell to cancer last week, Bethesda is featuring a collection of his work on sites attached to their biggest properties. Though Adamowicz will no longer be seen sketching new worlds for players to explore, the development team at Bethesda says players have yet to see the end of his work."Right until the end he was drawing, creating images for a new game many years off. It is in that game, and our past games, that he will live on. You have not seen the last of his amazing talent and spirit," Bethesda's tribute page notes. "We will miss him terribly, but he will always be with us."

Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion invite you to participate in their joyous union on April 3 in North America. Bethesda's double pack will feature the standard edition of both games, at $29.99 for Xbox 360 or $19.99 for PC.Bethesda isn't allowed to release the double pack on PS3, Pete Hines told Joystiq. "We will continue to work to try to change that, but at present it is still not approved," he said. "We would like to release a PS3 version a well."Seeing as Fallout 3 launched in 2008 and Oblivion in 2006, it's about time they settled down, found a partner and relinquished their previous $60 lifestyle. Of course the age gap may upset a few people since two years is, like, 80 years in video game time, but they'll get over it. While they're buying the double pack, probably.

We'll admit it -- the Xbox Live Black Friday deals aren't exactly as thrilling as the competition's are, but there are still some big savings to be had. Take, for instance, the massively discounted Marvel vs Capcom 2 for just 320 MS Points ($4!), or Fallout 3's Games on Demand release -- sans DLC -- at 25 percent off (pricing varies by region -- $22.49 in the US). Those are both pretty solid deals! Microsoft's Major Nelson also promises more deals this coming "Cyber" Monday, so if today's offers aren't as exciting as you'd hoped, there'll be even more in the coming days. Oh, and there's always the week-long XBL sale that Microsoft is running -- Super Meat Boy is still only $5 and still really great!

  • Homemade PIP-Boy 3000 does (almost) everything

    09.03.2011

Here at Joystiq, we love the idea of taking the non-existant and making it, well, existent, and we applaud the modders, hackers and crafters out there that are crafty enough to do it. Take MyMagicPudding, for instance: not content with living in a world where Fallout 3's wrist-mounted Personal Information Processor didn't exist, Mr. Puddin' took it upon himself to bend the universe to his will create a fully functioning PIP-Boy 3000. Using an HTC Desire HD, an Arduino Uno microcontroller and a custom-cast casing forged by "Skruffy," Puddin's PIP-Boy stays true to its vault-born inspiration by ignoring the Desire HD's touch-screen capabilities and instead utilizing a functioning scroll-wheel and potentiometer; the correct lights even light up corresponding to what screen you're on. Puddin's first foray into the world of electronics is a picturesque representation of one of our favorite gaming gadgets, but the sad truth is that so many components were required to produce a perfect PIP-Boy, there ended up being no room left for the owner's arm. Once again, the limitations of physical space have prevented fiction from becoming reality.
