  • The Great E3 2014 Giveaway: 13 free special edition PC games

    by

The ebb and flow of PC gaming has been odd. Arcades rose and fell. Handhelds were dominated by a single company then marginalized by phones. Consoles rules economically but became more and more PC-like over time. Personal computers themselves, meanwhile, have been tidal over gaming's lifespan. Throughout the '80s, they were home to both arcade-inspired twitch fests and the medium's first lengthy experiences, but they were never as culturally dominant as the NES. In the '90s, PC gaming became the premiere field for technological advancement, pushing three-dimensional design long before living room boxes. In the past fifteen years, PCs have risen to a new level of prominence. At the dawn of the HD console era, the industry's biggest players still banked on the strong earning power of consoles but increasingly supported PCs with their biggest games, sometimes with the best versions of those games. E3 break outs like BioShock, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Assassin's Creed, Metro: Last Light, Far Cry 3, and many more have seen definitive versions appear not on consoles but on PCs. All the while, the rising tide of independent developers have flourished on PCs thanks to the ease of digital distribution. E3 conversation may still be dominated by which console maker won the show, but going into E3 2014, PC players are guaranteed to see something they like. In the fifth week of our massive E3 2014 giveaway extravaganza, we are handing out an absolute treasure trove of PC games. This week, we're giving away 13 games, all of them special or limited edition boxed releases, and one totally sweet book. It's a Diablo book. Which goes with the special edition of Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. How's that for a tease? If you want to win this insane haul, write to us at podcast@joystiq.com with the subject line "E3 Giveaway Week 5" before 10AM EST on Tuesday, May 27 and tell us what past E3 game announcement made you glad you game on PC. One random winner will get the lot. What PC games will one lucky winner get their hands on? The full list and contest rules after the jump.

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot revealed today that the publisher's open-world first-person shooter Far Cry 3 has sold more than 9 million copies since its multiplatform launch in 2012. "Far Cry 3 has now sold 9 million units since its release in December 2012, which bodes very well for the launch of Far Cry 4 later this year," Guillemot said during the company's end-of-year earnings call today. Far Cry 3 had shipped and digitally sold six million units as of May last year. Guillemot noted that the Far Cry series collectively sold almost 3 million additional units during the last fiscal year, making it one of Ubisoft's biggest-selling franchises. [Image: Ubisoft]

  • More Far Cry 4 evidence emerges, this time from an Ubisoft resume

Ubisoft may not want to publicly acknowledge the existence of a new entry in the Far Cry series just yet, but that won't stop its employees from citing the game in their resumes. Xavier Plagnal currently serves as Studio Design Manager at Ubisoft Shanghai. A visit to his LinkedIn profile reveals that from September 2013 to the present Plagnal worked as Content Director on "the next Far Cry." It doesn't say what exactly he directed for the game, nor does it offer any word on the game's plot, setting or the platforms it may appear on. Though we can't say for certain that a new Far Cry game is in the works until Ubisoft officially confirms it, the claims made by Plagnal's resume line up with earlier indicators of its existence. In October, Cliff Martinez, a composer best known for his work on the film Drive, let slip in an interview that he was "working on a video game called Far Cry 4." Only a few months prior, Ubisoft Senior VP of Marketing and Sales Tony Key stated that "[Far Cry is] a great brand, and now it's got the recognition it deserves, so we're clearly going to make another one."

Anxious to take a trip somewhere beautiful yet superbly dangerous? From now until January 14, Microsoft is discounting select Far Cry content on Xbox 360 as part of the Deal of the Week promotion. For $5, you can snag Far Cry Instincts Predator, Far Cry 2 or Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. Dropping $15 will get you Far Cry 3, while an extra $5 will secure the "Deluxe Bundle" DLC full of additional single-player missions, unique wild game to hunt and a variety of weapon unlocks for the campaign and multiplayer. Far Cry 3 was very successful for Ubisoft and helped to steer the company toward focusing on more open-world games. Ubisoft has said Far Cry 4 will "clearly" happen and Drive composer Cliff Martinez mentioned last year that work had already begun on the sequel. Ubisoft has yet to officially announce the next game in the series.

  • Far Cry Compilation coming to PS3 in February [Update]

To celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the Far Cry franchise, publisher Ubisoft has announced a special compilation package for PS3 owners. The Far Cry Compilation bundle features Joystiq favorites Far Cry 2, Far Cry 3 and, the standalone riot, Blood Dragon. PlayStation 3 owners can stalk the jungles of the Far Cry universe on February 11 when the set is released at retail for $40. Joystiq has asked Ubisoft if Far Cry Compilation – as it's officially named – will arrive on other platforms, but has not heard back at the time of publishing. Update: Ubisoft tells Joystiq that, in the United States, Far Cry Compilation is only coming to the PlayStation 3. Details for other regions are forthcoming.

  • Assassin's Creed 4, more heavily discounted in Ubisoft's holiday sale

Ubisoft is currently hosting a massive sale, including half-priced versions of Assassin's Creed 4, and Far Cry 3 at 75 percent off. The caveats attached to these deals are all time-based and surprisingly complicated. For instance, that Assassin's Creed 4 discount is only available to UK PlayStation 3 owners on the PlayStation Network and draws to a close on December 21. The Far Cry 3 deal however, which can be found on Ubisoft's online store, runs until January 5 and includes a swath of other games such as Splinter Cell: Blacklist, and even a few discounts on non-Ubisoft games like Fallout 3. A cursory glance at the Ubisoft store shows The Walking Dead's PC incarnation at $6.25 and the Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition at a mere $5. If sorting through the reams of discounts seems like too much work, here's a trick that might help: While you can find all of Ubisoft's discounts by navigating its site, those who visit the Winter Sale page are able to pull up lists of games based on the size of their discounts. Edit: The text of this article has been altered to clarify the terms of the Assassin's Creed 4 discount.

  • Deus Ex actor claims he was original voice of Far Cry 3's Brody

Deus Ex: Human Revolution actor Elias Toufexis, who provided the gravely voice for hero Adam Jensen, told convention goers that he'd been hired by Ubisoft to play the lead role in Far Cry 3, only to be replaced later. As X360A reports, Toufexis claimed he'd recorded voice work as Far Cry 3 hero Jason Brody, work that would never be used after his starring role in Human Revolution. "In fact, I shouldn't say this," Toufexis told the MCM Expo crowd over the weekend, "But there's a game called Far Cry 3 which I'm sure you guys know, where I had played Jason Brody. I played him for two years, did the voice and when Deus Ex came out they replaced me because they were nervous that ... 'We don't want people playing this game and thinking of another game.'" In a world where the prolific Nolan North exists, that seems an odd turn of events. Clearly Toufexis never asked for this, but he was philosophical about how things worked out. "It's justifiable," Toufexis concluded, "It's understandable, but my normal voice is what I used for that character too. So now it's like I'm losing work because Jensen is so popular."

Sony has announced its European PlayStation Plus lineup for October, revealing that subscribers will receive free access to Far Cry 3 and other downloadable hits throughout the month. Capcom's action-RPG Dragon's Dogma will also launch for PlayStation Plus in Europe next month, complete with the game's recently released Dark Arisen expansion. Black Forest Games' Kickstarter-funded platformer Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams rounds out the month's PS Plus offerings on the PlayStation 3. PlayStation Vita owners will receive the crossover fighting game Street Fighter x Tekken as part of the PlayStation Plus program in October, along with Namco Bandai's oddball stuff-gathering sim Touch My Katamari. Sony has issued no word as to whether any of next month's featured games in Europe will join North America's PlayStation Plus lineup.

  • Bungie talks Destiny's connected play, Far Cry and Borderlands influence

    by

In an interview with Edge Magazine, Destiny creative director Joe Staten took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of other open world shooters to the Destiny development process. Staten noted that the dev team analyzes titles like Borderlands and Far Cry and looks at "the things they're doing well and also at opportunities they might have missed that we can capitalize on." One big missed opportunity according to Staten? Encountering other players in the wild: You can party up with a group of people and then go around with that group, but never in Borderlands are you going to collide with a group of other people doing it too. We don't just do that once or twice in the game, we do that all the time, everywhere. You see other people on the horizon, hear gunfire over a hill and see space magic flying behind some trees, and you know...there are other people out here, that [changes everything]. Colliding with other people is sort of the core component of most MMOs, though Destiny may be the first big console-specific shooter to rely on such mechanics to fill out its game world. Staten also confirmed that Destiny will offer a leveling system complete with talent points -- another feature fans of MMOs will likely find quite familiar.

Far Cry 3 is on sale for $20 on GameStop's site. The offer only applies to the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of the game, as the physical PC version is not available online through GameStop, though a downloadable version is being offered for $40. It's currently discounted to $23.99 on Steam as part of the wallet-crushing Summer Sale. Given that Far Cry 4 will "clearly" happen, we're pretty sure that now would be a good time to catch up on the series. %Gallery-172621%

Ubisoft will pursue a sequel to Far Cry 3, Senior VP of Marketing and Sales Tony Key has announced plainly. "It's a great brand, and now it's got the recognition it deserves, so we're clearly going to make another one: more on that soon," Key told GameSpot. That recognition comes from combined retail and digital sales to the tune of 6 million as of May, making the game one of Ubisoft's top recent performers alongside Assassin's Creed 3 and Just Dance 4. A standalone spinoff to Far Cry 3, titled Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, was released back in April. It stars sergeant Rex "Power" Colt, a cyber-commando up against the Omega Force cyborg army in an alternate 2007, ravaged by nuclear war and '80s action movie references. Our review says it "broadens the appeal of its source, thanks to a hilarious, accessible dollop of nostalgia, coated in the mechanics that made Far Cry 3 great."

Ubisoft's standalone and neon-loving throwback, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, has surpassed 500,000 total units sold on XBLA, PSN and PC, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told GamesIndustry International. While Guillemot neglected to break down how Blood Dragon's sales were spread by platform, he did specifically call out boosted Far Cry 3 sales on PC as a result of Blood Dragon's favorable reception. Blood Dragon's critical and commercial success as a companion product is something that Ubisoft will investigate, Guillemot said, so it's possible that Ubisoft may try and use this formula again in the future. Ubisoft has released its financial information for the 12 month period ending March 31, 2013, which by all accounts seems to have been a pretty legit fiscal year for the publisher/developer conglomerate. The company crossed the finish line with €1.256 billion ($1.615 billion) in revenue and €64.8 million ($83.3 million) in profit, an 18.3 and 73.7-percent year-over-year increase, respectively, when compared to the €1.061 billion ($1.364 billion) in revenue and €37.3 million ($47.9 million) in profit recorded at the end of 2012. Ubisoft contributes its stellar year to the continued success of its main three franchises, Assassin's Creed, Just Dance and Far Cry, the latest entries in which have all sold between six and 12 million copies.
