This thread in the official forums caught my eye. The original poster argues that in his guild, the guild leader gives women preferential treatment, and while he doesn't come out and say it, he certainly insinuates that the GL is being friendly in a looking-for-some-love kind of way. I have seen this in one guild I was in, where the women were definitely treated better than the men. It got to the point of being awkward watching the officers flirt with these ladies night after night. On the other side of the coin, I was in a guild years ago during my Everquest days that more or less would not allow any women in. They felt that they were a distraction, as the (stereotypically) lonely Internet boys would spend too much time flirting and not enough time concentrating on the task at hand. Needless to say, I left that guild for several reasons, the "No Women" policy being one of the big ones. Not being a woman myself, I can only guess that women playing WoW, as in most other areas of life, would prefer it if they were just treated like everyone else. Most probably don't want special treatment, but they don't want to be ostracized either. I know a couple women playing Warcraft who won't speak on Vent due to the constant flirting and tells they receive when they do. I see this boorish behavior at work and at the bar, so I guess I shouldn't be shocked to be seeing it in a game that allows people the safety of anonymity.
