This year will mark the end of an era for console gaming. Next-generation consoles are coming in 2020, but it also means both the PS4 and the Xbox One are at the peak of their power and popularity. Not to be outdone, there's also Nintendo's Switch, which has already seen a second-generation hardware twist in the handheld Switch Lite. Our selection for this holiday season runs across all these consoles, as well as including Sega's nostalgia-baiting Genesis Mini. We've focused on tried-and-tested AAA titles like Overwatch on the Switch, and Control available on both Xbox and PlayStation, while also suggesting more under-the-radar hits like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Risk of Rain 2. Naturally, Pokémon Sword and Shield isn't quite out yet, but from our early impressions, we know it will satisfy any Pokémon fans you're shopping for. And, if you need even more recommendations for the gamers in your life, we have a guide for every console.

The Fire Emblem and Shin Megami Tensei series are pretty popular with JRPG fans, but crossover title Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE? Not so much, mostly due to being stuck on a system a lot of people never owned, the Wii U. That's about to change thanks to an upcoming port on the Switch next year.

  • 'Fire Emblem: Three Houses' is a slice of epic life

This article contains no story details, beyond those revealed in the game's official trailers. There is discussion of some mechanics and procedural details yet to be shown by Nintendo. Fire Emblem: Three Houses is the game Fates should have been. Developer Intelligent Systems has made a lot of tweaks to its formula for the series' first outing on the Nintendo Switch, and the result of those changes is a game that marries Fire Emblem's dual personalities in a meaningful and satisfying way. If you don't know about Fire Emblem already, a quick primer: It's an almost-three-decade-old tactical RPG franchise from Japan that only came to the West after characters like Roy appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee on the GameCube. It didn't truly rise to worldwide prominence until the release of Awakening on the 3DS in 2012.

Outside of Super Smash Bros, the physical incarnations of Mario, Pikachu and other Nintendo icons don't have much to do on their plastic pedestals. While they transform into teachable, collectible opponents in Nintendo's flagship brawler, tapping an Amiibo toy into Mario Kart 8 or Hyrule Warriors is a one-step process to unlock a minor in-game item. Nintendo has created a more substantial cameo – bordering on reverent – for the Amiibo line in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M, the oddball 3DS strategy game from developer Intelligent Systems. If you happen to own a Fire Emblem Amiibo and tap it in, warriors Marth, Ike, Robin and Lucina are summoned into Code Name's steam-powered war against aliens. They each have unique attacks, animations and can be an integral part of your strategy.

  • Super Smash Bros. to use NFC tech, says Nintendo France exec

Super Smash Bros. uses the Wii U's near-field communication technology, if comments by Nintendo France MD Stephan Bole are accurate. Following the company's unveiling of NFC figurines, Bole told Le Figaro the tech features in the console version of the new fighter. "E3 will be an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology on Nintendo consoles," Bole said (via Polygon). "NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros." Apart from the sense it makes given the huge roster of Nintendo's fighter, the comments are in line with what the company said earlier this month. President Satoru Iwata revealed Nintendo will showcase the Skylanders-like tech at next month's E3 conference, along with compatible games. Furthermore, Nintendo plans to launch the figurines by the end of this year, and Super Smash Bros. is due to hit Wii U this winter. What today's news does raise is the question of the 3DS Super Smash Bros, which is out this summer; Nintendo will release a NFC reader and writer for the handheld in the first half of 2015. Bole's comments coincide with the unveiling of another returning Smash character, with Fire Emblem's Ike joining the burgeoning cast today - just in case you thought the House of Mario was done with the conveyor belt of reveals. The beefier-looking swordsman joins 29 other combatants already revealed for the upcoming brawler. [Image: Nintendo]

The latest returnee to make the Super Smash Bros. roster is Marth, the sword-brandishing hero of the Fire Emblem games. He's been in every Smash game since Melee, and is the 18th playable character confirmed for next year's Wii U and 3DS brawler. Of all the new Marth screenshots Nintendo posted on the Super Smash Bros. website, one somehow stood out. We look forward to reading the hundreds of fan fiction stories this produces, and then pouring salt into our eyes.

This is a column by Kat Bailey dedicated to the analysis of the once beloved Japanese RPG sub-genre. Tune in every Wednesday for thoughts on white-haired villains, giant robots, Infinity+1 swords, and everything else the wonderful world of JRPGs has to offer. In 2001, Nintendo of America had a decision to make that would have a huge impact on what at the time was one of its least known properties in the U.S.: Fire Emblem.Super Smash Bros. Melee was set for release that fall, and among its cast were Marth and Roy, whom most westerners had never heard of before. Nintendo of America weighed cutting them for a time, but eventually relented and decided to leave them in. In the early going, I had no clue who they were; soon enough, I grew to like them, just like everyone else. The stage was set for Fire Emblem to make a surprise leap to the U.S.
