Google has begun looking beyond India to Southeast Asia for its "next billion" users. And its annual report on the region's internet economy gives us an insight as to why it's so crucial to the web giant. Home to 650 million people, Google projects Southeast Asia's digital economy will triple in size to $240 billion in the next seven years. So sharp has been its rise that Google has revised its growth expectations for the region (made in collaboration with Singapore sovereign fund Temasek) for the third year on the go.
Sam’s Club expands same-day grocery delivery through Instacart
Sam's Club, Walmart's members-only warehouse stores, will start offering same-day grocery delivery at half of its US locations by the end of October. The service will expand this month to more than 100 Sam's Club locations, serving nearly 1,000 zip codes.

Food delivery drones take flight in China
You don't have to wait for food delivery drones... if you live in the right part of China. Alibaba's online meal giant Ele.me has been cleared to use drones for delivering orders in Shanghai's Jinshan Industrial Park. The initiative won't deliver directly to your abode, but it will save you a lot of travel time: there are 17 routes, each of with two fixed drop-off points. Your food should arrive within 20 minutes, which isn't always possible with conventional cars slogging through traffic.
GrubHub and Yelp now offer delivery from over 80,000 restaurants
To combat rival services DoorDash and UberEats, Grubhub is expanding its partnership with Yelp to deliver meals from over 80,000 US restaurants on the food listing company's site and app. This finalizes GrubHub's $288 million acquisition of Yelp's Eat24 directory that it began last fall. In exchange, Yelp will get an undisclosed cut of every GrubHub order made through its service.
Uber acquires David Chang’s delivery-only ‘restaurant’
Today, Ando, the popular delivery-only New York restaurant from famed Momofuku chef David Chang, shut down operations, as it's been acquired by UberEATS. The restaurant had been working with UberEATS since it launched in 2016, and now it will be fully integrating with the food delivery service.
Ford and Postmates team up to deliver orders with self-driving cars
Ford announced at CES today that it has entered a partnership with delivery service Postmates and will begin piloting various programs to see how self-driving vehicles and on-demand delivery can work together. This is the first on-demand delivery app to partner with Ford on a pilot like this and the two will be looking at what both merchants and customers need when it comes to sending and receiving deliveries via self-driving cars.
Just Eat adds a cheeky 50p service charge to dodge EU rules
Thanks to new EU regulations, you won't have to put up with irritating card surcharges for much longer. Unfortunately, minimum card spends you come across in small shops and such will stick around, but from January 13th, the Payment Services Directive comes into play. This stops retailers from charging you more for, say, using a credit card than a debit card, or generally just passing the transaction fee onto the customer. It won't, however, make your Just Eat delivery any cheaper. That's because yesterday, ahead of the new EU rules being implemented, Just Eat did away with its 50p fee for paying by card, and instead created a new 50p "service charge" that applies to all orders.

Just Eat, we need to talk. Your latest invention, a food-ordering "magic wand," is ridiculous. I get that you want to have some fun over the Christmas period — and somewhere, your marketing department is having a good chuckle — but you've gone too far. Enough is enough. First of all, is it meant for the kitchen or the bedroom? Actually, don't answer that. Then there's the operation. You have to download a separate app (ugh), login and make an order the old-fashioned way. Only then can you repeat this order — and nothing else — by waving the wand around like Merlin.
IHOP will deliver your pancakes in select cities
IHOP 'N GO is the International House of Pancakes' online ordering service that was in a limited test phase earlier this year. Now, the breakfast food chain is rolling out the program nationwide. Starting today, most US restaurants will accept online to-go orders placed at IHOP.com. IHOP also plans on rolling out a mobile app by the end of the year, as well as adding delivery service through Amazon.com and DoorDash. That program is being tested in select cities in California, Texas, Oklahoma, Washington and Utah.
Amazon and Allrecipes team up to take on Blue Apron’s meal kits
We've heard rumblings that Amazon might be ready to take on Blue Apron with "prepared food kits," and now it looks like it's finally here. Today, AmazonFresh and Allrecipes.com announced a new partnership that will allow for meal preparation delivery. Top recipes on the site will now have an embedded option allowing users to purchase the ingredients for same-day delivery through Amazon Fresh.
UberEATS now includes restaurant ratings and recommended dishes
Today, Uber announced a few changes to the UberEATS app aimed at helping users decide on what to eat. First, the company has brought a five-star rating system to the restaurants listed in the app and users can now rate a restaurant they've ordered from as well as give individual dishes a thumbs up or a thumbs down. All of these community ratings are displayed in the app for anyone to see and they'll reflect the previous 90 days' data.
Deliveroo's delivery fee-dodging subscription is going nationwide
Like any addiction, a Deliveroo dependency can get pretty expensive between the cost of food and the £2.50 delivery fee. But Deliveroo isn't your average peddler, and earlier this year it launched a subscription service that offered power users the option to dodge all delivery fees in exchange for a fixed monthly payment. After 'trialling' Deliveroo Plus in Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Brighton and York, the company has said today it's expanding the service nationwide. It's cheaper than it was initially, too, now costing £8 per month instead of £9, though there's no longer the option of getting a discount by paying for a year upfront.
Facebook's food delivery feature now brings Five Guys to all
Facebook is already a place where people can check into restaurants and search recommendations to decide where they're going to eat next. Now, the social media giant is taking that a step further. The company announced today that users in the US can use the platform to order food for takeout and delivery. Previously, this feature was only available to select users. The new service is rolling out today on iOS, Android and the web.
Amazon may deliver Chipotle and Five Guys right to your front door
Amazon's been getting into the food game for a while now. After all, they've introduced Amazon Fresh and drive-through grocery pickup. And oh yeah, they acquired Whole Foods earlier this year. Clearly Amazon is serious about the food business; they've established their presence on the grocery side, but what about the restaurant/takeout side? While they've had the Amazon Restaurants delivery for a while, it hasn't exactly taken off. A new partnership with a company called Olo might help with that.
McDonald's offers UK deliveries through UberEats
In the UK, there are many ways to stave off hunger without leaving the comfort of your home. Just-Eat, Deliveroo and Amazon Prime Now are but a few of the mobile apps that will deliver to your doorstep, however until today one particular restaurant chain has been impossible to obtain: McDonald's. Following a rollout in the US, the fast-food giant has now teamed up with UberEats in Britain. So yes, you can order a Big Mac meal whenever you're feeling lazy or hungover. We won't judge, promise.
Denny’s mobile ordering is your lazy ticket to bad food choices
Denny's, which likes to think of itself as "America's diner," is making it easier to get its food without any human interaction -- very American, indeed. The company announced today that customers can now order delivery or takeout on its website, with its apps or through Twitter DMs. The new service, called "Denny's on Demand," comes with revamped iOS and Android apps and 24/7 access to the restaurant's menu.
