The end of the year is quickly drawing upon us. While many are scrambling to grab those last-minute gifts for friends, loved ones and that guy you got for the office Secret Santa for whom you have no idea what to get (protip: give him an Xbox Live points card and steer 'em here), those who may have procrastinated a bit less than the rest of us can treat themselves with some Xbox Live goodies. Major Nelson posted up the deals and content set to arrive during the final third of this month, which you can see in full past the break.

With all the hype surrounding the likes of Gran Turismo 5 and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit, Forza Motorsport 3 dev Turn 10 Studios would like owners of its Xbox 360-exclusive racing sim to know that they're not forgotten. To that end, it's releasing the Community Choice Classics pack on December 14 for 400 Microsoft Points ($5), featuring 10 new cars voted into the game by fans. For us, the highlight of the pack is the 1982 DeLorean DMC-12. (We probably shouldn't tell Turn 10 it could've just sold the car by itself for $5 and called it a day.) You'll find the full list of cars after the brake break, and remember: just like election day, you can't complain about the winners if you didn't vote. Well, you can, but you'll sound like a big jerk.

Evidence has surfaced that Microsoft plans to re-release Turn 10's Forza 3, seemingly as an "Ultimate Collection" with what we can assume would include much, if not all of the game's downloadable content. Australia's OFLC ratings board has listed the potential encore package -- which, if released this holiday, would appear to be a friendly challenge to Sony's long-awaited Gran Turismo 5. Additional retail sources could not immediately corroborate the Forza 3 Motorsport: Ultimate Collection listing, but we'll update as this story develops.

What most people don't tell you about the fast lane is that it's quite expensive. It's not that the lane itself is paved in gold -- it's that the faster a car goes, the more money it seems to cost. Thankfully, video games allow us to experience this thrill at an affordable price, and this week's Xbox Live Deal of the Week is all about joining the racing elite on the cheap. Five Forza Motorsport 3 DLC packs have each been discounted by 40 percent this week (through Sunday), bringing them down a mere $3 a piece. You can see more details about the packs by checking out the links below. • Snag the Splinter Cell Xbox 360 Elite bundle for $325

We know how it is. You've had your eyes on the Splinter Cell Conviction Xbox 360 Elite bundle for weeks now. "I want it!," you say, "But it's so expensive." You're in luck, because it looks like Sam Fisher did some 'negotiating' with Dell and got the company to knock a full $75 off the price, making it a cool $324.99. It's worth noting that Dell seems to have the bundle details incorrect. The bundle includes two wireless controllers, not one, and a 250GB hard drive as opposed to a 120GB model. It also does not include an HDMI cable, an accessory Microsoft stopped bundling with Elites some time ago. If $325 is still a bit too steep, you can also grab the Xbox 360 Elite Spring bundle, which includes Halo 3: ODST, Forza Motorsport 3, one wireless controller and a 120GB hard drive for just $269 ($30 off the usual price). Act now and you'll still have time to get in on the Halo: Reach beta. Lest you haven't heard, it has jetpacks. [Via Destructoid]

A quick note for any driving simulation fans that have yet to dive into Forza Motorsport 3: Amazon is currently offering Turn 10's latest opus as a Gold Box deal. The game is selling new for $49.99, making it $10 cheaper than the retail price. Of course, if you've waited this long without picking up a new copy, you could probably pick up a used copy for less. Then again, there's no telling whose grubby little fingers have been groping those, so new certainly has its advantages.

Microsoft is putting on its best marketing face to try and sell some Xbox 360s in Japan, hence a new Xbox 360 Elite bundle -- last week's rumored bundle. The new pack includes a copy of Forza 3 and Bayonetta on top of all the usual trimmings that come with an Xbox 360 Elite -- all for a cool ¥29,800 ($319.48). It's one of the more unique software bundles we've seen, to tell the truth, but a nice way to entice Japanese gamers. Each title comes from an opposite side of the spectrum: Forza 3 is a diehard racing sim with an emphasis on cool, calculative driving, whereas Bayonetta is a frenetic action game with an emphasis on giant, ambiguous animals and riding motorcycles in space. The bundle is available to Japanese consumers right now. [Via Kotaku]

Up for grabs is the Road & Track Pack, which is being released in cooperation with Road & Track magazine. The pack includes ten new cars for 400 ($5). Are you preparing to buy your first ever Xbox 360, and are looking for the best value for your money? Alternatively, did your Xbox 360 just commit ritual seppuku, and now you're looking for a SKU that comes bundled with some good games? Both parties are in luck -- Amazon recently added a listing for an Xbox 360 Elite Spring 2010 bundle, which includes Halo 3: ODST, Forza Motorsport 3 and a 120GB hard drive for just $299.99. According to the listing, this bundle will go on sale next Tuesday, March 9 -- the same day the $399 Final Fantasy XIII bundle hits Amazon's virtual store shelves. We're extremely excited about this news -- not because it's a great deal (though it really, really is), but because it's allowed us to break the world record for "Most Times Using The Number '3' In A Single Headline." Thanks for making this dream possible, Microsoft. [Via 1UP]

Turn 10's Forza 3 has managed to attain double platinum status -- dubs plat in "cool kid" speak. Microsoft announced that the game sold over two million copies since its October release. The racer took just over a month to surpass one million sales, and has clearly been doing laps around the money pit ever since. And hey, if you're wondering what you're missing in all of this hot pedal-on-metal action, there's a demo on Xbox Live right now.

  • Forza 3 director on 60fps, Gran Turismo 5

    02.05.2010

VG247 has posted an interview with Forza Motorsport 3 director, Dan Greenwalt. Perhaps the most interesting bit is Greenwalt's explanation of why developer Turn 10 was so intent on making the game run at 60 frames per second. According to Greenwalt, racers that run at 30fps have "visual shuttering artifacts," which developers are forced to cover up with motion blur. This, he said, takes up GPU resources for other features. Beyond that, he noted that the 60fps benchmark was essential to the "feel" of the game and the responsive nature of the controls. "I'm sure you would get a similar response from Infinity Ward regarding Call of Duty," said Greenwalt. When asked what he thought about Gran Turismo 5, and whether he was looking forward to it, Greenwalt said that "all good game developers look at what their competitors are doing." He stated that he has been "a long-time fan" of the series, though he added, "At this point, after so many missed releases, it's nearly impossible to say what GT5 will be or when it will ship." That said, Greenwalt believes that Gran Turismo 5 will be "a good racing game." Not exactly "No game competes with us," is it? The interview also covers some interesting statistics, like the fact that players have driven over 1.1 billion miles in online Forza 3 races. Check out the full interview for more stats and insights on the game's development.

  • Future Forza 3 DLC cars decided by fan vote

Turn 10 is giving players a chance to vote for the vehicles that will be included in a future Forza Motorsport 3 DLC release. Running until January 29, a poll on car enthusiast site Jalopnik.com features 120 vehicles for players to choose from, focusing specifically on "iconic" and "classic" rides. The partnership with Jalopnik doesn't end there; March's Forza 3 DLC pack will feature the most "coveted 2009 and 2010 models" as chosen by the site's editors. If you're looking for your favorite whip to make the cut, you best make your click. Wait, what's this? The Batmobile is not on the list? Where's the option for a write-in candidate, huh?

Click to enlarge The North American International Auto Show is underway in Detroit, and to coincide with and commemorate this year's event, Turn 10 has rolled out a line of 10 downloadable cars for Forza Motorsport 3 -- many of which are on display in Rock City. The "AutoWeek Car Show Pack" is available now from the Xbox Live Marketplace and includes (among other rides) the 2010 Audi RS 6 seen in the above screenshot. While the actual car costs more than $120,000 in the "real world," it and the nine other virtual rides can be had for 400 ($5). • Forza 3 sales surpass 1m units; premium DLC released

    12.08.2009

[Paul J. Taylor] Since its late October launch, Forza 3 has sped into over 1 million homes worldwide, marking a commercial milestone for Turn 10's critically acclaimed racer. In conjunction with today's release of the game's second and now premium DLC car pack (the first one's always free, ain't it?), dubbed "Hot Holidays," Microsoft has tallied up some Forza 3 stats. According to the publisher, players have so far tracked 6.6 million hours and 590 million collective miles -- no word on flats or oil changes. Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg tweets that "more than 4M [million] auction bids" have lead to "$18.7 billion" virtual dollars spent (we have to imagine at least a billion went to that gorgeous coop pictured above). Of course, Microsoft has its eye on the real dollars, offering today's 10-car pack for 400 ($5). The full list of cars is posted after the break. Additionally, a second premium pack has been confirmed for January 12, and -- wouldn't you know it -- that date coincides with the kick-off of the Detroit International Auto Show. Don't want to grow up or pay full price for video games? A list of purported Black Friday game deals for Toys R Us has shown up online, with a few temporary price drops that may justify a late night or early morning trip to TRU on November 27. Most of the great deals are "5AM Doorbusters," which means that if you have yet to pick up Halo 3: ODST, Need for Speed Shift, or Forza 3, they'll all be $34.99 ... at 5AM. Good luck! Also marked down at that obscenely early hour: Dead Space Extraction, which most of you have yet to pick up. It'll be just $24.99. Whether any of that is worth getting up at ridiculous o'clock to fight each other over is your call. See the full list of deals here.
