Google's Pixel 3 reveal came and went earlier this week, bringing us ever closer to the end of new flagship season. For Samsung, the past few months have revolved around the Galaxy Note 9, but the company saved a little something special for its next mid-range device. Samsung may have already announced a mid-tier handset with three rear cameras, the Galaxy A7, a couple of weeks ago. But today, it's going one better with the new Galaxy A9, the world's first quad camera smartphone.

Triple-camera smartphones are officially the new normal. Samsung has unveiled the mid-range Galaxy A7 with three cameras at the rear: an 8-megapixel shooter with an ultra-wide 120 degree lens, a 24-megapixel main camera, and a "depth" lens to give you out-of-focus bokeh effects. The cameras use Samsung's Intelligent Scene Optimizer, which figures out what you're shooting and adjusts the contrast, brightness and color to optimize image quality.

Samsung's Galaxy S and Note smartphones usually get the most fuss, but it's arguably the Galaxy A series that matters most. These are the affordable phones that you're more likely to see in some parts of the world, and they're what keep the company going. It's a big deal, then, that Samsung just launched 2016 upgrades to the entire Galaxy A line. The 4.7-inch A3, 5.2-inch A5 and 5.5-inch are all sleeker than their ancestors, with narrower bezels and other cues clearly borrowed from the Galaxy S6. However, the real selling point may be shopping. Both the A5 and A7 are the company's first non-flagships to support Samsung Pay -- you no longer need to splurge just to use a Galaxy phone in place of your credit card.

Samsung has to deal not only with Apple's new iPhones on the high-end side, but excellent Chinese Android models like the Xiaomi Mi4 further down the food chain. To stop the bleeding in the latter segment, it just launched the Galaxy A7, its best mid-range model and slimmest smartphone to date. As we saw earlier, the 6.3mm thick metal unibody houses a Snapdragon 64-bit octa-core CPU with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a 5-megapixel front and 13-megapizel rear camera. The 5.5-inch AMOLED screen looks like 720p and not Full HD, and it'll only run Android 4.4 to start with.

Samsung is far from done releasing thin, all-metal, mid-range smartphones, judging by a leak at Chinese wireless regulator Tenaa. Though more modest in specs than the Galaxy Alpha, the new 5.5-inch Galaxy A7 is definitely the A-series' alpha model, trumping the Galaxy A5 and A3 phones. At 6.3mm, it's Samsung's slimmest model ever, and also sports a 1080p screen, 64-bit Snapdragon 615 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 16GB (non-upgradeable) memory and 13-megapixel front/5-megapixel rear cameras. The model shown above is strictly for the Chinese market -- to find out whether it'll come to these parts, you'll have to wait for Samsung's official word.
