Respawn's Titanfall picked up the most nominations ever in this year's Game Critics Best of E3 awards, notching up six compared to the previous record of five. The multiplayer mech-stuffed shooter is up for Best of Show, and is one of 16 nominations for publisher EA. Endeavoring to stand tall against Titanfall in the Best of Show category are two other games in Watch Dogs and Destiny, which both received five nominations each. Also up for Best of Show are two pieces of hardware: the Oculus Rift and the PS4. The PS4's nomination is the icing on the cake for Sony's showing, with the platform holder earning a total of ten first-party nods compared to three for Microsoft and Nintendo each. The Xbox One is up for Best Hardware against the PS4, however. Also, the Xbox One leads the PS4 in terms of nominees per platform, up 34 to 33. As for who actually won what, the winners will be unveiled next week on July 2. In the meantime, you can check out the full list of nominations here.

Of the games shown at E3, The Last of Us has been named the best of them, according to the Game Critics Awards, the honors given to games by a shadowy secret cabal of attending journalists. Naughty Dog's survival game earned "Best of Show," "Best Original Game," "Best Console Game," and "Best Action/Adventure Game," along with a "Special Commendation for Sound."There were a few awards that went to other games, surprisingly. Among the other big winners were the Wii U for Best Hardware, Dance Central 3 for Best Social/Casual Game and Best Motion Simulation Game, and Sound Shapes for Best Handheld/Mobile Game.

  • BioShock Infinite sweeps Best of E3 Game Critics Awards, PlayStation Vita wins Best Hardware

There was little confusion amongst this year's E3 judges as to which game was most deserving: Super Stick Man Golf. Unfortunately it wasn't eligible for nomination, already being out and all, so the judges (this writer included) had to settle on another game. Luckily, Ken Levine and his crew at Irrational Games brought the scrumtrulescent BioShock Infinite which, when the votes were all tallied up, managed to win an admittedly finite number of awards. While we're sure the team is disappointed, we'd like to remind them that Infinite won every award it was nominated for, including Best of Show. Other notable winners include The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which bagged both Best Role-Playing Game and Best Console Game; Battlefield 3, which took home Best Action Game and Best Online Multiplayer; and Sound Shapes which scored Best Handheld Game and Best Social/Casual Game. We've assembled a list of all the nominees with the winners in bold just past the break. If you want some more stats (Xbox 360 was the lead platform with 14 wins) check out the Fast Facts link below!

  • Game Critics Awards nominate best of E3 2011, Infinite and Uncharted 3 lead the pack

Oh, game journalists, you're so predictable. Just look at the nominees for this year's Game Critics Awards, for example. Four nominations for both BioShock Infinite and Uncharted 3? Could your bias for top-notch presentation and exhilarating, imaginative gameplay be more obvious? As you'll see in the big list after the break, that kind of bias for really great-looking games permeates all the selections. Just once, we'd like to see some recognition for the really lousy, boring games. Just once, we'd like to hear, "And the award for Super Good Game goes to ... a weird Korean free-to-play dating MMO set in a bakery." Just once.

  • 3DS and Rage are big winners of E3 2010 Game Critics Awards

Just one week after revealing the nominees of the E3 2010 Game Critics Awards, the numbers are in and the big winner is ... Nintendo's look-ma-no-glasses 3D handheld, the 3DS. But wait, the 3DS is just the Best of Show and Best Hardware winner! If you're looking for software, look no further than id Software's look-ma-crab-hands mutant-infested shooter, Rage, which took home the most awards in the show: Best Console Game, Best Action Game and Special Commendation for Graphics. If you think it must've been frustrating to be either Sony or Microsoft, both of which were busy showing off their newest motion-sensitive gadgetry, you'd be mostly right. Microsoft did have one small consolation prize: Dance Central, Harmonix's look-ma-no-coordination dancing game for Kinect, took the well-deserved Best Original Game and Best Motion Simulation prizes. None of Microsoft's first-party Kinect efforts and no PlayStation Move games, first-party or otherwise, made the list. Find the entire list of award winners, with links into our game pages for all of our coverage, after the break.

With E3 2010 over and done with, and a glut of outlet-specific honors dispensed, it's time for the annual Game Critics Awards to reveal its list of nominees. Culled from the selections of "31 leading North American media outlets that cover the videogame industry" (including Joystiq!), the Game Critics Awards represent something of an industry consensus on The Big Show. This year, id Software's upcoming post-apocalyptic-'em-up Rage took home the most nominees, scoring five including Best of Show. Sharing the Best of Show nominee space are Disney's Epic Mickey, Dance Central, and Portal 2, each of which received four nominations across the boards. We've got the entire list after the break, and check out the "Fast Facts" breakdown linked below for some flamewar-worthy stats (Xbox 360 leads the platform nominations with 46 versus PlayStation 3's 39). Notably, Electronic Arts had the most nominees for a publisher for the fourth year in a row, earning 15 nominations ... and that's not including the formerly EA Partners-signed Rage.

  • Uncharted 2 crowned Best of E3 in Game Critics Awards

The winners of the annual Best of E3 Game Critics Awards have been announced, with Uncharted 2 taking home the gold as "Best of Show." Not only that, but the game was also awarded "Best Console Game" and "Best Action/Adventure Game," taking the lead with three wins. Check out the trailer above (yes, again) for a good indication of why Uncharted 2 was handed the grand prize. Meanwhile, Scribblenauts also got the recognition it deserved, coming in second with two awards for "Best Original Game" and "Best Handheld Game." No other games received multiple awards, though Valve recaptured the "Best Online Multiplayer" award with Left 4 Dead 2 a year after its predecessor did the same in 2008. While EA's Brütal Legend is nowhere to be seen in the list of winners, EA did take home more wins than any other publisher (three, if you're curious). And while the PS3-exclusive Uncharted 2 took top honors, from a console perspective the Xbox 360 edged out the PS3 by a single win, at eight versus seven. Check out the full list of winners after the break and, for more granular stats, check out the breakdowns at the Game Critics Awards website.

  • Analyst: Best of E3 winners see strong domestic sales

This year's Game Critics Awards for E3 honored Fallout 3 with "Best of Show," but will that translate into sales when the game actually releases? Well, chances are, sales of the game will probably have very little to do with the title receiving the E3 award; however, according to analyst Ben Schachter of UBS, the "Best of Show" does typically go on to see an average of 2.42 million units in sales within the US.Schachter notes that every software winner over nine years has gone on to see over a million units sold (except for 2000's Jet Grind Radio). He also points out that each of the winners was either a first-party game or a console exclusive*. *Don't get nitpicky, we're way ahead of those nerdsploding and furiously typing that MGS came to the GameCube six years later.

  • E3's Game Critics Awards do the Game of the Year thing

"Another GOTY award?" you say. Sure, but this one is different. Sort of. Tired of being relegated to the confines of E3 every year, the folks behind that event's Game Critics Awards have tasked themselves with determining not just the games of E3, but the best games of the year! Using a weighted process (not unlike the one used for Joystiq's totally definitive Game of the Year awards), the panel of 36 judges picked their top 10 choices and, using the magic of mathematics, whittled those choices into a list of ten games. The list is being trickled out all week, starting with today's numbers ten and nine: Uncharted: Drake's Fortune and Assassin's Creed, for being "one of the most memorable games you can play" and being "one of the most unique gaming experiences of this, or any other year" respectively. Of course, we're all wondering just how closely the winners will match up to their E3 showings and, knowing that a win in one doesn't guarantee a place in the other, wondering if we'll look at future GCA winners differently. Let's see where Rock Band and Mass Effect wind up first, okay?

  • Wii takes "Best of Show" from E3 awards

An elite band of ninja game critics were chosen for their uncanny (and often deadly) speculative accuracy to determine the winners of the Game Critic Award's Best of E3 2006. Their choice for top honors, "Best of Show"? Nintendo's newest console: the Wii. Other big winners included Spore, nabbing three awards, and Gears of War with two. While the desire to see a victor emerge from the rubble-strewn LA Convention Center is great, the distinction hasn't always been accurate. Take for example, 2001's E3 champion: the Gamecube. 2002's best of show: Doom III. We could keep going, but you get the point. Regardless, Gamespot's Greg Kasavin wrote of the Wii, "It's a good thing Nintendo got the name change of its next console out of the way before E3. With the shock of that announcement mostly over, the company proceeded to become the talk of the show ... by inviting audiences to get their hands on an impressive lineup of fun and interesting software for the Wii...not to mention that wild controller." Insert insightful sprint versus marathon metaphor here and reflect. Check out some fun stats on the all the winners.
