  • I got a makeover in a web browser

Outside of my wristwatch, I don't wear jewelry (makeup either), but thanks to FaceCake I was able to give myself a total makeover within Chrome. First off, yes the company's name is more than a bit ridiculous. But its tech is pretty neat! Without downloading anything -- no plug-ins, add-ons or extensions are necessary -- you can try on earrings and complement pieces simply using a webcam and "any" browser. Notice the stunning necklace and earrings on the handsome chap up above? They move with you, and if you want to share how they look to your social platform of choice, that's totally possible. The outfit hasn't announced any of its retail partners for virtual try-on just yet, but says that we should see those surfacing within two to three months. Hopefully those include places like Macy's, Gilt, JackThreads and maybe even Warby Parker. Until then you can watch me model some super-gaudy pieces in the GIF below.

Despite their utility, smartwatches remain a geeky niche item thanks to a certain lack of je ne sais quoi. However, HP is partnering with a retailer called Gilt to build an Android- and iOS-compatible smartwatch that may finally tick the style box, thanks to US designer Michael Bastian. He'll take care of the design, which will feature a circular, 44mm stainless steel case and swappable bands: black rubber, brown leather, olive green nylon and a limited edition black.

Gilt is a site that allows members access to special sales on clothing and other fashion items. The latest fashionable accessory available through the site: the pink and white 3DS XL. Gilt is the first retailer to offer this 3DS XL color in North America, bundling it with either Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (which is currently sold out) or Style Savvy: Trendsetters for $219.99, $20 less than buying the system and a game separately.Note that the bundles will arrive between November 26 and December 6, so don't buy it expecting to play Style Savvy right away; it'll show up fashionably late.

  • Samsung Chromebook goes on sale early at Gilt (update: sold out)

We can't say we expected Gilt to be the first place to offer Samsung's new Chromebook but, well, here we are. Google's now sending out emails like the one above to at least some folks that signed up to be a part of the Cr-48 pilot program, telling them that they can join a "limited time" sale on the high-end discount site starting today, June 1st. In true Gilt fashion, the Chromebook (otherwise known as the Samsung Series 5) will also come paired with a "limited edition" sleeve designed by Rickshaw. Unfortunately, "limited" seems to be the keyword here -- the sale is only open to those that have received the email, and it's not clear how many Chromebooks are actually available. Update: And they're all gone, but there is a wait list if you want to hang onto some hope of getting one before the official launch on June 15th. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

  • Gilt Taste looking to introduce cooking app with "motion-activated recipes"

Our friends over at TechCrunch got the scoop on Gilt Taste, a high-end online grocery retailer that doubles as an online magazine. What's intriguing, however, is an iPad app that it's currently developing. The folks behind Gilt Taste are working to perfect "motion-activated recipes" using the iPad 2's camera. Instead of touching an iPad while you're cooking, you would just make a hand gesture in front of the screen to go through the recipe. Those who use Microsoft's Kinect are familiar with the technology. This sort of technology makes perfect sense, and it's the sort of app that I think the iPad 2 is made for. As someone who used to get flour and fingerprints on my iPad while cooking, it would be nice to have an app such as this.
