Streaming won big in TV at the 2020 Golden Globes, but Netflix failed to take advantage of its record-setting number of nominations. Despite being up for 34 prizes, the streaming service won just two, Olivia Coleman's best actress win for The Crown and Laura Dern for best supporting actress in Marriage Story in the film category. Most significantly, Netflix's prestigious Martin Scorsese-helmed film The Irishman was completely shut out of the motion picture awards.

Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning and both Netflix and Amazon drew more nominations than they did last year. Amazon received nine nominations for its series and one for a film, while Netflix drew eight series nominations and five for films. Hulu earned two nominations.

Streaming shows are no strangers to picking up Golden Globe awards, and that trend is continuing at the 2018 ceremony. To start, Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale has won awards for both the best TV drama and best TV actress (Elisabeth Moss). The wins weren't completely surprising given the strength of Margaret Atwood's story, Moss' performance and the all-too-timely subject matter, but it's still a significant victory.

Last year, Twitter trumpeted that it scored the rights to livestream the Golden Globes...pre-ceremony red carpet show. You know, where all those nicely-dressed celebrities are asked pressing questions about things, and they answer, and the interviewer coos at their success/struggles/relationship/divorce/look. Well, you can still see that online this year, but you'll have to go to that other social media dumpster to watch it: Facebook snagged the livestreaming rights to the Golden Globes red carpet pre-show this Sunday, January 7th.

Casey Affleck won a best-actor Golden Globe for his performance in Manchester by the Sea, marking the first time Amazon Studios has received a major film category award. It picked up rights to the film, directed by Kenneth Lognergan and produced by Matt Damon, last year at Sundance for $10 million. Amazon has a pretty good chance of snagging an Oscar next month too, as Affleck is the front-runner for best actor in that competition

Twitter will livestream the fluffiest part of the fluffiest awards show, namely the red carpet ceremony of the Golden Globes awards. The pre-show will provide, if you can believe it, two full hours of people walking on a carpet that is red, complete with glamor and (hopefully) sass. "The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is always searching for innovative ways and original tools to reach our audience ... and Twitter is the recognized partner to help us expand our audience," HFPA President Lorenzo Soria said in a statement.

While Amazon and Netflix are now regular names during awards season, the Golden Globes helps provide a good benchmark for how the wider industry rates their output. For the 2017 Globes, TV honors are even, with both companies securing five nominations each. As for movies, Amazon drama Manchester by the Sea has a whopping five nominations.

To celebrate its two Golden Globe wins, Amazon is letting you watch its original series Mozart in the Jungle for free this weekend. Starting tomorrow at midnight ET, you'll be able to stream the show without a Prime membership until midnight Sunday local time. During the awards ceremony this week, the show won Best Musical or Comedy Series and Gael García Berna won Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series. Streaming services collecting awards for original content is nothing new, and this year's Golden Globes nominations show the potential for more of the same. Netflix and Amazon both picked up nominations for shows (and a movie), with the former nabbing nine total. Three of Amazon's five nominations came for Transparent, a show which is already critically acclaimed. As you might expect, Netflix's list of nominations includes two each for House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.

Fresh off its two Golden Globe wins, Amazon is streaming all ten episodes of its Transparent original series for free this weekend. Starting at 12:01AM ET until 11:59PM PT Saturday, you can watch via Amazon's Instant Video app for TVs, streaming gadgets and mobile devices, including Fire TV, Roku, Xbox, PlayStation and more. The show won Best Musical or Comedy Series and the lead, Jeffrey Tambor of Arrested Development fame, took home Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy Series a few days back. If that wasn't enough of a celebration, new Prime subscriptions will be $72 on Saturday -- a nod to the 72nd installment of the awards soirée. • Netflix and Amazon's video battle continues at the Golden Globe Awards

Once upon a time awards shows had sources from a predictable list of sources, but now internet video has crashed the party. When the Golden Globe Awards are presented January 11th, Netflix will be up for seven while Amazon has snagged two nominations for its new show Transparent. The two are even going head to head in the Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy, where Transparent and Orange is the New Black are joined by Silicon Valley, Jane the Virgin and Girls. Last year Netflix broke through with its first win as Robin Wright brought home a trophy for her performance in House of Cards, and now it's back for more. The company's focus on original content is showing (has anyone watched Marco Polo yet?) and Amazon is quickly catching up, while Hulu has... a GIF generator and some episodes of Deadliest Catch. (That was mean, actually we'd keep an eye out for season two of The Wrong Mans December 24th, plus new series from Amy Poehler, J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot Productions and Jason Reitman on the way. Maybe next year Hulu.)

  • Netflix plans season 3 of Lilyhammer, new show based on Marco Polo

Netflix's exclusive content push is rolling on, starting with news that Lilyhammer will return for a third season later this year. As usual Netflix hasn't released viewer numbers or statistics, but season two's eight episodes have apparently done well enough in a month to justify another go-round -- a good sign for the series that kicked off the service's focus on fresh content. This weekend, the streaming video service also netted its first Golden Globe Award as Robin Wright won for her part in House of Cards, and Netflix co-hosted an awards party with The Weinstein Company. The surprise however, is that the two had more to celebrate than their recent deal that will bring TWC movies exclusively to Netflix during their pay-TV window, starting in 2016. They're also working on a new TV series, focused on "the epic adventures of Marco Polo, a kinetic tale of high politics, masterful manipulation and deadly warfare among clashing empires." Due later this year, it joins other selections like HoC season two and Orange is the New Black season two on Netflix's slate of originals and will arrive at around the same time as the Wachowski-backed sci-fi series Sense8. As we've come to expect from such series, the nine-chapter Marco Polo production has a number of experienced names attached. That includes executive producer and creator John Fusco of Young Guns and Young Guns II fame, plus executive producer/director Dan Minahan, who not only carries credits from Game of Thrones and True Blood for HBO, but also wrote/directed one of our current Netflix streaming favorites, Series 7: The Contenders. Placed in 13th century China amid "a world replete with astonishing martial arts, sexual intrigue, political skullduggery and spectacular battles" this project is likely aimed directly towards fans of HBO's adult-themed hits and recent Starz history-based efforts like DaVinci's Demons and Spartacus.
