You're about to have one less option for card games on your console. CD Projekt Red has warned that it's shutting down Gwent on PS4 and Xbox One to focus on the PC and mobile versions. Between the recent release of the Witcher-themed title on iOS and its upcoming Android edition, there would be too many versions to support while still "improving feature parity between them," the studio said. You'll have a while to keep playing, but you'll start to notice the shutdown process very quickly.

After it was first announced in March, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is finally making its way to iOS later this month. Starting on October 29th, both iPhone and iPad owners will be able to play the free-to-play collectible card game by Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red. Better yet, if you've already been playing the game on PC, all your progress, including any cards you may have collected, will carry over.

Netflix casting its Geralt for the upcoming show based on The Witcher isn't the only reason fans of the fantasy franchise have to be excited. Developer CD Projekt Red has announced a release date for spin-off digital card-game, Gwent: October 23rd on the DRM-free GOG store. Come the end of next month, the game will finally exit beta (after debuting in June 2016) and when it does, it'll arrive with its revamped single-player campaign, "Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales." The developer has said this narrative will have stronger ties to the Witcher universe than the previous single-player mode.

You'd think that CD Projekt Red would have locked in Gwent's mechanics with an expected launch just months away, but not so -- if anything, it's ready to toss out what many are already taking for granted. The developer has unveiled a revamp (nicknamed Gwent Homecoming) that could shake up fundamental aspects of the game. The initiative will push for both a "complete overhaul of the visual experience" (including a tone more consistent with The Witcher) and, more importantly, key changes to gameplay.

At E3 2016 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt Red announced that it's working on a standalone Gwent title for Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4. It was supposed to enter closed beta for the former two platforms in September, but players will now have to wait until October 25th to get their hands on the virtual card game. In a statement, the studio said it still needs a little more time to work on Gwent before it feels comfortable letting the public play.

If you're a fan of the Witcher series, you've probably heard of Gwent. The collectible card game is an optional part of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, tasking players with collecting cards and ultimately dominating their opponent on the tabletop "battlefield." Now, as expected, the game-within-a-game is being turned into a game of its own (try saying that three times fast.) It'll launch as a closed beta on Xbox One and PC this September, before coming to PlayStation 4 later on. Similar to Blizzard's Hearthstone, it'll be a free-to-play title with optional in-game purchases. Taking a page from The Elder Scrolls: Legends, however, developer CD Projekt Red is also working on a "fully featured single player adventure" for the game.

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt will feature a card game within the open-world RPG, CD Project Red revealed. "Gwent" is a "fast-paced card game" invented by dwarves that includes four factions. Players duel with other characters using over 150 playing cards with multiple combat styles, heroes and spells. Gwent represents a "clash of two armies locked in mortal struggle on a battlefield," in which players' decks act as their forces. The developer also revealed the inclusion of bonus physical goodies for the Xbox One Collector's Edition of The Witcher 3. In addition to the 200-page artbook, medallion, steelbook and cases, limited edition Xbox One owners will receive a a cloth map of the game's world and two physical Gwent card decks. Best Buy, GameStop and Walmart listings peg the Collector's Edition at roughly $150. The Witcher 3 will launch on February 24, 2015 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. [Image: WBIE]
