Netflix is working with filmmaker Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats) to create a He-Man limited anime series entitled Masters of the Universe: Revelation. Smith, who'll serve as the project's showrunner and executive producer, has unveiled the new show at the annual Power-Con convention celebrating Eternia's super siblings. Unlike Netflix's She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which is a reboot of the 1980's Masters of the Universe spinoff featuring He-Man's sister, Revelation will pick up where the original animated show left off.

  • Daily iPhone App: He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe has the power

The exceptional Punch Quest wasn't the only extremely macho iOS action game released on the App Store in the past few days. In fact, it arrived alongside a new title from GlitchSoft (Destructopus) and Chillingo that stars one of pop culture's most muscle-bound animated icons: He-Man. The bare-chested Eternian is the star of his very own classic 2D hack-n-slash romp, He-Man: The Most Powerful Game in the Universe, and it must be said that the game isn't just a treat for fans of the seminal 1980s Filmation cartoon -- anyone who enjoys a good arcade-style experience on their iPhone or iPad is in for a great time. Costing US$0.99 and featuring in-app purchases which thankfully don't hamper the experience, this universal game uses a intuitive -- if a tad sluggish -- gesture-based control scheme for controlling the mighty He-Man though 27 levels of lavishly hand-drawn scenery. The game looks especially vivid on Retina devices, but its personality-packed lead character, his friends, and his foes still pop on the iPad 2 and earlier devices. It's not the most challenging game, but the mixture of running, jumping, slashing, and learning new special moves that it provides is still a ton of fun, especially if you've gotten a kick out of games like God of Blades. You don't have to know anything about the source material to enjoy it, but if you're a child of the '80s -- particularly a fan of the show -- you're going to be blown away by the amount of fan service on hand. Just check out the video below for a taste of what to expect from He-Man, Skeletor, Orko, and the rest.

  • Transmog into the Masters of the Universe

Some of my fondest childhood memories involve plunking myself down along with my brother and sister and happily watching a few hours of incredibly cheesy cartoon shows. I grew up with classics like Thundercats, He-Man, Transformers and many more. While these days those old cartoons seem incredibly outdated and more than a little silly, for me and my siblings, they were amazing feats of animation that sparked our imaginations and creativity. Not so coincidentally, imagination and creativity are two things that work incredibly well with transmogrification. After delving into the world of comic book superheroes, I decided to try my hand at recreating some of the looks worn by the heroes and villains of those beloved old cartoon shows. After all, there's already a version of He-Man and Skeletor in game. Although Adam Eternum and Keldor the Lost look spot-on in game, they're wearing combinations of different armor types -- something that doesn't work for transmogrification, unfortunately. But a little mixing and matching goes a long way toward creating decent enough looks that will have you evoking the power of Grayskull in no time flat.

  • THQ and Mattel enter game deal, includes Masters of the Universe rights

THQ will target kids with a new multi-year, multiplatform "alliance" with Mattel -- that's for sure. What we're not so sure about is whether those targets are intended to be kids of the 80s or their kids of today. A news announcement reads like a who's who of garage-sale name drops: Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price, Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, Masters of the Universe, and even Polly Pocket (who's apparently still going strong these days). While the deal with Mattel encompasses games that could appear on any platform imaginable, THQ did specifically note the potential in re-introducing the toy maker's brands through the uDraw GameTablet for Wii. "As we have shown with the combination of uDraw and Pictionary, there is enormous potential for the strategic relationship between THQ and Mattel," said Martin Good, executive veep of THQ's Kids, Family and Casual Games division. The brilliant part about all this is that when you hand over THQ's Tablet and a copy of the He-Man: By the Power of Grayscale drawing game to the GameStop clerk, you simply say, "It's for my kid" -- and he sort of has to believe you. • LucasArts and BioWare confirm impending announcement

LucasArts and BioWare have invited members of the press to attend an event later this month at which the two companies will finally officially announce the game they've been working on together. They did not say what the game is, of course -- then how could they officially announce it at the event? Obviously we're suspicious that it will be the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMO (or just Star Wars: The Old Republic, as the rumored title goes).EA's John Riccitiello already confirmed the existence of that game under the table way back at E3, and other tidbits of news have only supported it since then. But hey, we suppose it could be something else. It was suggested in the Massively offices that maybe LucasArts bought the rights to He-Man, and it is in fact a He-Man MMO. Or maybe GI Joe. Yeah, we're a-stretchin'. More likely: a Willow game.According to Worlds in Motion, the invitation says it's "the game that's been rumored about for years." Uh-huh. The announcement will come October 21st, so hold your horses. Or your speeders. Whatever.

  • Ask Joystiq: Chex Quest, He-Man and broken 360 gamepads

Making up for last week's barren edition, today's Ask Joystiq is a little heftier. Topics covered include He-Man and Day of the Tentacle, Chex Quest, PS2 boxes, broken Xbox 360 controllers and region downloading (again). If you have any burning questions, unsolved gaming mysteries, or just a desire for musings from our knowledgeable cadre of writers, drop us a line at ask AAT joystiq DAWT com (and yes, we write it that way for a reason).Q: Do any of you remember the 1997 PC game "Chex Quest"? When I was 9 I got it in a box of chex cereal and thought it was amazing. Recently my 5 year old cousin came over to my house and told us about a game with chex and cheerios and "zorch". Amazingly enough he had been playing Chex Quest on his friends computer! What ever happened to quality games being released in cereal boxes?- Curtis C.The question here is more rhetorical than anything, but once we learned more about this game we absolutely needed to post about it. In 1996 a small newmedia company called Digital Café created Chex Quest, a Chex-themed first-person-shooter that has the esteemed honor of being the first video game ever distributed for free through cereal boxes. If that alone wasn't cool enough, Chex Quest was actually a total conversion of id's Ultimate Doom, meaning that cereal-munching munchkins were playing a re-skinned version of the violent revolutionary series just two years after the height of its controversy. According to the Chex Quest wiki, the inclusion of the game helped increase sales of Chex cereals by over 200%, and it won several awards for promotional achievement.Chex Quest has since been made freeware (PC only), and can be found for download here. As for releasing quality games in cereal boxes, we're all for it. If indie games can be distributed along with trendy t-shirts, we see no reason why indie developers can't strike similar deals with Kellogg's. Get on it, guys!- Scott Jon Siegel

  • Power up your alarm clock with He-Man and friends

We have to admit, after having seen software engineer Douglas Gray lovingly transplant the heart of a He-Man Talking Alarm Clock into one of Sony's ubiquitous Dream Machines, that maybe we were a little cruel when we performed all sorts of horrifying childhood experiments and unnecessary surgery on the most powerful man in the universe and his MOTU posse. Nonetheless, we've got the old power of Grayskull flowing through our veins again, maybe even enough to follow Doug's step-by-by step guide on gutting the salvaged toy and wiring it to the buzzer output of Sony's cube. Yeah, waking up to He-Man and Teela rapping about Skeletor every day for the rest of our lives seems like appropriate penance for dismembering poor Man-at-Arms and using a magnifying glass to scar all three visages of Man-E-Faces. Sorry guys.[Via MAKE]
